1. Introduction
Main purpose of this report is to design a suitable specification of high voltage test equipment and design
high voltage laboratory layout to conduct high voltage destructive test on power apparatus in the 132kV
transmission system voltage. The destructive tests are as follows,
1. Withstand and flashover test with AC (50Hz)
2. DC and Impulse (lightning) waves test.
2. Design consideration
I. Lighting
II. Comfortable Heating System
III. Ventilation and Air Conditioning system
IV. One or Two Portal cranes covering the whole area (Up to 1000kg)
V. Line hardware to fixing of test object
VI. 5T forklift
VII. Mobile fences with mains and waring lamps/warning signs.
VIII. Sphere gaps for calibration
2.3 Description about essential features in HV laboratory
2.3.1 Power supply to HV lab
The power supply for a complete HV laboratory is usually from a medium voltage network. One
or several three phase distribution transformers in a nearby substation should be used for that
purpose. One has to take into consideration the maximum required test power (active and
reactive components), the supply power for control and measuring systems, the power for all
auxiliary equipment and an extra charge for later extensions.
Power cables connect this external power supply with the power supply room. This room should
be arranged close to the HV test hall and should also be shielded in connection with the
shielding of the related test room. The connection of the external power cables to the
equipment for distribution and regulation in the power supply room is realized via high
frequency (HF) power filters attached to the shielding of this room.
Switching cubicles with main and operation switches, measuring equipment for primary voltages
and currents, protection devices and control components like programmable logic controllers (PLC).
Regulators, one for each HV test system and compensation reactors and/or capacitor banks, to
reduce the demand of external supply power.
