Teacher Interview Questions
Camryn Huffman
1. How do you discover the differences between the children and their learning styles?
Initially I give a base-line test to see what they do know, as far as their knowledge and screen the

kids before they start school. As far as learning-styles, you just have to observe the kids, and that

can take time.

2. In reference to your exceptional learners, what activities do you do where they can excel

in?
In the past, I use tactile and kinesthetic activities. By using body movements, I can connect their

learning better. I use my assistant to give then extra interventions for what they are missing out

on.
3. What do you do when a child is hurt by another?
That happens a lot. We read books on how to treat other people. We also talk about emotions and

how people feel. In my classroom, I take kids out into the hallway and talk to them. If it keeps

happening, I involve the parents then the principal.

4. What actions would you take in order to protect your students when disaster strikes?
Any means possible. I would do whatever it took. I am willing to protect them with my life if I

have to.

5. Have you experienced any issues with students and their social and emotion health

affecting their performance in the classroom?

Absolutely, a lot of times you can tell kids who are ignored or mistreated at home because they

act out a lot. They respond well to your praise or any kind of attention. I have had kids that were

sexually abused, and that makes them do inappropriate things. It definitely affects their learning.

I can tell when kids dont get to bed on time, they dont listen as well.
6. Do you have FERPA in your school? If not, what kind of form of protected rights do you

have for student information?

I cant talk to step-parents unless they are custodial. No grandparents or family members who

arent custodial. I cant talk about other students to parents. If there is a conflict, I cant say who

did it against their children. If I have special-ed kids, it is even more. I cant mention their

disabilities to any other students, so they are extra protected.

7. Do you have any advice for what to do if you notice any issues with a student's social and

emotional health?
First of all, I would directly address it with the kids. Sometimes they need positive physical

contact like a hug or something. Lots of positive attention for the good behaviors. If you can trust

the parents, try to find out more info. I use the counselor for a resource for more ideas, I have her

come in and observe the kids and give me ideas to try. I want to give lots of boundaries to kids

who have these problems. Kids who have these problems need these boundaries. I just try to love

them, and sometimes that is hard. But I usually can, and that makes me have empathy for them.
8. How do you conduct your project-based learning such as group work?
We do group work all the time but not always project-based. It is hard to do project- based at this

point in the year. We have done partners this year, where they had to work together on math

problems, it was about shapes: no curves and curves. To manage groups, I try to put them around

the room so they wont disturb their neighbors. I have to walk around and make sure they are on

the right track. I use a rubric sometimes to let them know what Im looking for and that way I

can see what they have mastered.

9. What kind of standardized testing do you have to conduct at this age level?
North west testing NWEA, dibbles (same benchmark), special-ed kids have the istar, but in

kindergarten we dont need that because we can get accommodations for NWEA.
10. What is the biggest obstacle youve had to overcome while in this field?
The government. The government makes it difficult to make enough money for teachers. It

mandates things that arent in the kids best interests. They dont let teachers have a say. Lots of

hoops to jump through that takes away from instructional and planning time. The way I work

now v. the way I taught 20 years ago is 100% different in every single way.

Reflection:
The artifact above is a teacher interview that I completed in EDU 101: Introduction to

Teaching. I had to complete twenty hours of service-learning within this course. One of my

assignments throughout this experience was to interview the teacher in which I was observing.

This interview came to be a very helpful artifact to use throughout my education and in my

future teaching career.

This was an appropriate artifact in that it explored the way my teacher controlled her

classroom. My teacher was an expert in a variety of teaching methods. She also provided

instruction that promoted critical thinking and problem-solving. Her classroom was controlled

and relaxed, for the students knew what she expected. She created a great learning environment

for all who entered. My teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures

of the discipline, and therefore creates a safe, encouraging environment for all learners.
This standard can cause for many goals to arise in order to meet it. A professional

learning goal that I wish to achieve is how to effectively initiate rules and maintain a relaxed

learning environment for my students. Interviewing the teacher above can start this process, but

the true answer will come with experience. Throughout my hours in schools, hopefully I can

obtain the knowledge of how to achieve this goal.
