Plagiarism

Universities around the world are being faced with Plagiarism, a phenomenon that is widely
spread. They created a lot of programs and methods to find out this phenomenon.

What are the most common ways on Plagiarism? This phenomenon is violation of the
authors right and can be represented in different forms like:

1. When someone presents a certain work as its own, whereas the original author is
unknown.
2. When someone presents someones work as its own (full plagiarism).

3. When someone borrows a text, or a part of it, and does not indicate the source is called
partial plagiarism.

4. When someone translates a text, or a part of it, from a foreign language and does not
signify the source and presents it as its own then it is called translating plagiarism.

5. When someone takes a part of a foreign text and makes light changes (paraphrasing)
without signifying the source is called paraphrasing plagiarism.

6. When some borrows a part of a foreign text maybe it also paraphrases it but does not tell
the source in the correct place. In other words it is hided in the bibliography or in
another footnote is called secret plagiarism.

7. When someone shows a text of book or any part of it in exams or other events it is called
Self plagiarism.

The most widely plagiarism used on internet is the partial plagiarism, respectively the
borrowing of foreign text without mentioning the source also known as Copy & Paste
plagiarism. This type of plagiarism is usually made to push the people to thnk that the text in
a owning of the person they borrowed from. Whatsoever the plagiarism was, is, and will be
chap-fallen.

The Law and the plagiarism- The strongest states in the world protect the authors and their
rights by punishing the doers. We heard and read about the case when an ex-minister of Defense
in Germany, Karl Theodor Guttenber, was taken his PHD grade , from the university of
Bayreuth, after it was confirmed that he did not cite the sources of a lot of texts in his PHD
dissertation. Also he was asked to withdraw from all his political positions.

Plagiarism in Universities- as we mentioned above the universities are most widely exposed to
this phenomenon. Sebastian Sattler, in 2006 in his master dissertation in sociology, made a poll
on 226 students about the University and homework, resulting that from 159 students 19.5% of
their works were plagiarism.
The reason that the students commit Plagiarism- The world of internet is a part of our life and
gives us and students an easy access to different text, books, and works. With this access
plagiarism is taking a very high level of use. But the worst from all is that the students consider
taking works from other as legal. The reasons that the students might come to commit plagiarism
are:

Idly, the lack of motivation

Language retarders, when students have difficulties in the language they are supposed to
write.

The lack of knowledge how to write a research and the rules of citation.

Bad time management, time pressure because of the short terms (including exams in a
very short of time and work together with the study time.

The pressure to achieve higher and with it the grades.

How to fight this phenomenon? Most of the people want to learn, write and to respect the ethic
regulation during their writing. The teachers have to work hard and use the students desire and
soften this phenomenon by raising awareness about its damages.

To fight this phenomenon we certainly have to:

Instructors have to teach the students the rules of citation and the risk of plagiarism,
Should raise the students awareness about the plagiarism and its damages,

There have to be created commissions to identify the cases of plagiarism,

By looking different methods and techniques to detect the cases when plagiarism is used

And this phenomenon should be punished by the law, etc.
