(Pedagogy Knowledge) Describe two examples of each of the following components of lesson
a. Introduction- The teacher brought in a scale and some groceries to weigh on the scale
when the students started learning about weighing different items. This seemed to get
the students engaged in the lesson. The teacher would also use the introduction to
introduce manipulatives that the students were going to be using during their math
lesson such as using pennies to group together when learning about multiplication.
b. Lesson Development- The teacher has one sheet with all her lesson plans on it for the
week. She has her Reading lesson broken down into Phonics, Read Aloud, Language/
Grammar, and Writing. After the Reading lesson and the Math lesson the students
spend time in centers. There are four different center for Reading and Math. Reading
centers include assignment, writing, small group and projects. Math centers include
guided practice, iPad, lab, and computers. On her lesson plans she includes what will be
done in each center each day. Another lesson develop strategy I observed was that in
her Reading book she will go through and highlight the main things she wants to focus
on in each lesson because they provide you will so much information that you need to
c. Concept Closure- I observed the teacher would close a lesson either by sharing with the
students what they would be doing in each of the centers and connecting it back to the
lesson or she would ask students questions to see how much information was retained
d. Assessment- For Math class my teacher would use math time tests to assess how they
were doing with their math facts. She would also have the students do a writing project
based on a story that they read as a class which would also be a type of assessment to
see how well the students have learned proper writing techniques and how much they
e. Instructional Strategies- I have seen both direct and indirect instruction being taught in
the classroom I was in. The forms of direct instruction I observed was during the
Reading lesson, most often the teacher would be teaching the students by writing on
the board or putting something on the doc camera. The teacher would have students
answer questions about the material, but the teacher was the facilitator. I saw indirect
instruction in the classroom during center time. In on the of the centers the students
were given materials and a task to draw out a model of a car that they would eventually
There are enough iPads in the classroom for all the students to use. The teacher has a doc cam
to project worksheets or directions onto the projector screen. The Reading curriculum they use
in the Journey Series and the Math curriculum they use in the Saxon Math series. There are
many manipulatives available for Math such as base ten blocks, inch square tiles, geoboards,
money, clocks, and more. They also have a classroom library with the books separated by
reading level so that students can check out appropriate books to read based on what their
