Lesson 1

I. General Information:
Grade Level: 2
Discipline: Mathematics
Unit Topic: Geometry
Time Frame: 45 minutes
Text: The Greedy Triangle
Other Materials: Alpha Shapes, post it notes, exit slips

II. Essential Understanding/Questions:


Students will be able to ask questions, answer questions (who, what, where,
when, why) and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
o Understand character, plot, and setting
o Analyze text information & illustrations to understand deeper
meaning of the story.
Use of appropriate vocabulary is necessary.

Questions:
Where is the passage did you find that key detail?
How do you know that is a key detail?
What clues do illustrations in the story provide to help you understand the
setting in the story?
What clues do the illustration in the story provide to help you understand the
characters in the story?
How do I reason with shapes and their attributes?

III. Standards/Indicators

RL 2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when , why and
how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
RL 2. 7 Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or
digital text to demonstrate understanding of its character, setting, or plot.
2.G.1 Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given
number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles,
quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
IV. Lesson Objectives
Students will be able to use information from the text to group/sort shapes
using known attributes.
Students will be able to explain reasoning for sorting shapes.

V. Evaluation/Assessment:
Assessment of Objectives
Teacher observation looking at students groupings of shapes discussion
of shapes
Exit slip

VI. Procedures:
Introduction
Read: The Greedy Triangle
Stop throughout the book, making a process chart of all the shapes
found in the story.

Teaching/Activities
Put students into groups of 3 or 4, place Alpha Shapes in front of
students, giving time for exploration.
Ask groups to sort the shapes anyway that they want collectively as
a group. Teacher will walk around asking students why they grouped
shapes the way they did.
Next have students sort shapes based on pictures and information
from the text.
At this time go back in the text to help students name their groups of
shapes.
Ask them to sort shapes into 2 groups, then to 4 groups. Walk around
asking why students sorted and grouped shapes this way. Begin to use
vocabulary from the text, shape names.

Closure

Have students share with another group their findings and explanations.
Have students return to the carpet to look back in the book to discuss shapes
that we read about and found in the alpha shapes.
Exit slip Post it write down one way students sorted shapes using alpha
shapes and explain WHY you sorted that way.
