Dear President Pacheco
This letter is to advise yau of the action of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education
(LCME) at its meeting on June 6, 2001, and to transmit o you the report of the team of
evaluaiors who visited the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine on
February 4-8, 2001.
The LEME carefully reviewed the findings of the survey report and took the following
actions:
1. Continued accreditation of the educational program leading to the M.D.
degree. The next full survey is scheduled to take place during the
2007-2008 academic year, contingent upon satisfactory resolution
of the concems noted below.
2. Requested that the dean of the School of Medicine submit a report to both
LCME Secretaries by May 1, 2002, addressing the following matters,
‘a. Evidence that the Curriculum Board and chief academic officer of
the school are working together to provide effective management
and evaluation of the curriculum asa whole. Documentation
shouid include the schedule and agendas of Curriculum Board
‘meetings held during the academic year, a summary of major
issues discussed at such meetings, and any resulting actions,
b. Mechanisms to assure ongoing analysis and improvement of the

d. The status of plans for constructing a new Life Sciences Research
Building, as well as a report of interim measures adopted to
‘address the problem of scarce research space.
3. Requested that the dean of the School of Medicine submit an additional
report to both LCME Secretaries by May 1, 2003, addressing the following
matters:
a. Assessment of the financial status and prospects for the medical
school and their impact on faculty morale.
b. Mecranisms to assure the adequacy of faculty supervision and
involvement in student leaming experiences in the problem based
earning curriculum,
¢. Development of programs to enhance the teaching and evaluation
skill of faculty and residents
4d. _Evidance that institutional reviews of graduate programs in which
medical school faculty participate effectively address the qualily of
education in such programs, particularly with regard to the MD/PhD
program.
‘The LCME noted that some of the concerns identified in the survey report were also
present at the time of the 1994 review of the educational program. The LCME is bound
by United States Department of Education reaulations to ensure that areas of
noncompliance with accreditation standards are corrected within two years. Failure to
make sufficient progress n correcting cited areas of concern may lead to
reconsideration of the schoo''s accreditation status,
Accreditation is awarded ‘o the program of medical education on the basis of judgment
that there is an appropriate balance between the student enrollment and the total
resources ofthe institution, including the faculty, physical facities, and operating
budget. Ifa proposal is dsveloped to significantly modify the education program, ori
there is to be substantial change in the student enrollment or the resources of the
institution so that the appropriate balance is distorted, the LCME expects to receiveManuel T. Pacheco, PhD.

prior notice of the proposed change. If the proposed change and/or balance of
resources is significant, zhe status of accreditation will be re-evaluated by the LCME.
