Guided Observation #1 Contextual Factors

Name: Mary Grace Winegar

Date: 4/23/2017
Course: EDUC 2300 Introduction to Education
School: Rogersville City School

1. Record the number of males, females, and ratio of ethnicity within the
classroom. Rogersville City School has 647 students. The ratio of males to females is
very even. The ratio of ethnicities is not very broad either. Rogersville City School is
comprised of white, African American, Hispanic, and Asian students. 90.2% of the
students are white, 4.7% of the students are African American, and 2.9% are Hispanic,
and 2.2% are Asian. There is not a lot of diversity in the school due to its location in the
state.

2. What are the developmental levels of the students within the classroom you
are observing? Most all of the students are on the same developmental level. However,
there are some students that are not. There is one severe autistic student and a few others
that are developmentally delayed. The developmentally delayed students are not far
behind the 7th grade level. Most of them struggle in ELA and Math. Therefore, they are
on a 5th-6th grade level in those areas of academic.

3. How is the instruction modified to meet the diverse needs of the students? The
severe autistic student has a special education teacher with him at all times. That teacher
will bring separate sheets of material for the student in math and science. However, the
instruction for the other students are just modified on a day to day basis. For example,
one day while I was at the school they completed an M&M project in math about
probability. These students were able to participate in this activity, but did not have to
complete all of the handouts that went along with the activity.

4. Research the school and the Tennessee State Government web site to
obtain information about the school community, school report card, and
school population. Rogersville City School has a mission statement of excellence is
built on tradition. They apply this to every one of their students. Rogersville City School
really has an atmosphere of a family home. All the staff and students have very close
relationships. Rogersville City School is known as a safe school. Although Rogersville
City School is a public school, they have rules and morals of a private school. It is the
only city school in Rogersville, and it is not a title 1 school. Rogersville City School
serves 647 students in grades pre-k through eighth grade. The pre-k at Rogersville City
School accepts any student. However, they are trying to move toward a special education
pre-k due to such a need. Rogersville City School is very well-known for its academic
success among staff and students. For the past three years, Rogersville City School has
made As in math, reading, and science in grades 3-8.
5. What are the specialized programs/activities found within the school that
would assist special needs children, those who need enrichment activities,
or remediation? List the specific programs that are available. While my time at
Rogersville City School, I learned that the teachers really care about the students. I have
found that the administration is very good about the ratio of staff to special needs
children. If there is a student who needs special assistant, there is a staff member by their
side. There are several enrichment and remediation activities at the school. This school is
very well-known for its after school program. Students are able to stay after school for
help on homework or extra-curricular, like the gardening club.
