Pre-teach vocabulary
Decipher (Erin)
There once was a man named James who decided to purchase an old creepy house. As
he was moving his stuff in he found a dusty old bottle sitting on top of the counter in the
kitchen. He blew the dust off and realized there was a letter inside. When he pulled the
letter out it was stained a brown color like it had been soaked in coffee. As he looked
closer there was writing on it...but it wasnt written in English. The writing was so hard to
decipher. There were symbols instead of words and James couldnt understand any of
it. It was as if someone wrote it so that no one else would be able to decipher it. James
made it his mission to research the writing and figure out a way to decipher the note so
he could know what this note said. What if it had an important message about the house
he had just purchased.
Invincible (Erin)
One famous person in history is Achilles. Achilles was a warrior who was considered
invincible during the Trojan War because it didnt matter what dangerous battle he was
sent into, he always came out unharmed. There were arrows, cannons, and swords fired
towards him and he would find a way to dodge them, leaving every battle without a
scratch on him. Other warriors thought there was no way to defeat him. Then finally one
day, everyone figured out that Achilles was in fact NOT invincible. In a battle he was
shot in the heel, right in the spot that is now known as the Achilles tendon. This shot
killed him. The man everyone thought was invincible, was actually human and had
weaknesses just like everyone else.
Contraption (Back in the early 1800s there was a poor farmer in the Southern United
States. He farmed cotton on his plantation. He was not married nor did he have any
children. He was all alone to do the work of 10 men. One day he decided he would make
his life easier and create a machine that would help him do his work. He thought,
planned, designed and created a new contraption in his barn. Low and behold the
Cotton Gin was born! )
Newfangled ( Most people today use smartphones and have for several years. However,
there are still the few that are holding out. One of them was a grandma of 78 years. Over
Christmas she made the leap to purchase a newfangled iPhone. From a flip phone to a
smartphone shes up in the 21st century. )
Ingenuity ( In the movie, Martian, the filmmakers used convincing ingenuity to show
how humans could live on mars in the future. The astronauts had to come up with a new
way of living life in a brand new place. They created solutions for problems they didnt
know they would have, like how to grow crops and live in harsh conditions. )
Improvisation (The actors in the movie, Zoolander, did not always follow the script. The
actors tried many new things on the fly, so there were many improvisations throughout
the film.)
