1 Introduction
On a beautiful tree-lined
street, where Midtown and Uptown
meet, stands 200 E 62. From the
buzz and bustle that is synonymous
with Midtown to the tranquility of
Central Park, from highly respected
educational institutions to the
world-class cultural highlights of
Museum Mile and the Upper East
Side, this unique neighborhood
represents the best New York City
has to ofer.
Inside, the fast pace of the
city recedes. Messana ORorke
has interpreted OConnor Capital
Partners vision, reimagining the
building with an open and refresh-
ingly contemporary design. The
arrival, interiors and amenities are
imbued with a sense of calm and
a reined sophistication.

Messana ORorke believes
in the ability of design to enhance
quality of life. The irm consistently
applies this credo across its body
of work which includes a wide range
of commercial and retail projects
throughout the United States
as well as over ifty private homes
in New York alone, and others
around the world.
As a result, the irm has
developed an exceptionally broad
portfolio characterized by its fusion
of modern design, contemporary
culture, and technical innovation.

The house relects the three principle charac-

teristics of the location: the Paciic Ocean, the
Paciic Coast Highway and the sloping site.
Its this slope that not only allows for dramatic
views of the ocean but also innovative design
elements like the roof-top main entrance, from
which one descends through the reception
rooms and into the private spaces below.

Messana ORorkes reputation for original thinking
applied to a profound understanding of materials
and mechanics is well deserved, and founded on
three fundamental principles:

i. The building must integrate with the sur-

rounding environment in both form and function.

ii. In the case of redevelopments, the spirit

of the original building must remain intact. Rather
than rebuilding, Messana ORorke reinterpret,
juxtaposing modern materials and methods with
older, more traditional ones.

iii. The interior architecture must anticipate

and facilitate the homeowners lifestyle. This
ability to tailor their designs to individual tastes
and habits sets Messana ORorke apart.

Whatever the project and wherever it is,

that both relect his or her personality. The same
is true for a brand. Malin+Goetzs new Carnegie

sophistication to allow the brand to stay true to
itself yet also blend in with its environment.

200 E 62 represents Messana ORorkes debut
in the ield of multi-residential interior design.
Ask Brian Messana what convinced
him and Toby ORorke to dedicate themselves
to such a large and complex project, and the
answer is unequivocal.
Until now, we could never be sure
we would be working with partners who
were committed to the same things as us,
he says. Partners who would accommodate
our approach and appreciate our eye for
detail. Partners who wouldnt compromise.
This seemed like the right project at the right
time with the right people.

and ive years later teamed up with British
fellow architect Toby ORorke (right).

Page XX Interior Architects Process 20 21

Sitting among the neatly arranged material samples,
sketches and swatches for 200 E 62, Brian Messana
is clearly proud of his work.
When asked how theyve managed to give
the residences such an abundant, airy feel, he takes
a moment to choose his words.
Three things, he says. First, people dont
live like they used to. Architects used to separate
things out. Kitchen here, dining room there, living
room over there. But lifestyles have changed, so we
dont do that. Rather than separating a home into
a series of small rooms, we open up the loor plans
wherever possible, allowing light to ilter through.
And weve integrated the storage spaces into the
structure, so theyre as discrete as they
are functional.
Second, weve been able to bring out the
best of the buildings existing architecture and
make the most of the extraordinary views. Im proud
of the open, airy efect of our designs, but these
residences dont just seem big they are big.
Third, its the materials we decided to
use. When, as we have, one removes everything
superluous, even the smallest detail becomes of
paramount importance. So we needed a palette
that was strong but understated. Something
quietly compelling, he explains, that is timeless
and beautiful in its simplicity.

Above Messana ORorkes work is the result of

a highly developed imaginative sensibility under-
pinned by an engineers commitment to precision.

Above Rather than breaking up an interior into

smaller, separate spaces, Messana ORorke seeks to
open it up not just to its own perimeter but to the
expansive views of the city beyond.

Interior Architect Messana ORorke 22 23

The task, we felt, was to deliver an appropriate
architectural response to both the building and the
neighborhood, says Brian Messana. Weve taken
downtown living, reined it just a little, and brought
it uptown.
The apparent simplicity of Messana ORorkes
designs isnt easy to achieve. In fact, it requires
rigorous planning. Nor is this simplicity a purely
personal aesthetic preference.
We suspect that residents here are going to
be looking for something a little unexpected. Its
another reason weve kept things simple, says Brian
Messana. Theyll be adding their own pop of color.
Their own pictures. Their own individuality. What
weve done merely makes it easier for people to
make themselves at home.
