L1: Assignment - 21st Century Jobs

Your Name: Abigail Mattson

Date: March 19, 2017

NOTE: Please bold all your responses so nothing is missed when your work is assessed.

MY TARGET PROFESSION (10 pts)

Please refer to the discussion board post from L1. Based on what you talked about, summarize
your future target job. Include full explanation of the work you will do, the work environment, and
why you are intrigued by this line of work (75-150 words):

My future target job is to work as a literacy specialist in an elementary school. I plan to

have my own resource room, and to work with small groups of students in grades 3-5.
These students will be below grade level in reading, or will have dyslexia or other
learning disabilities. I may also work with students one-on-one, and will prepare and
facilitate activities that challenge my students reading comprehension, fluency skills,
and phonological awareness. In the work environment, I will collaborate with third-
through fifth-grade teachers to pull out the students who most need supplemental
reading instruction. I am interested in this line of work because I enjoy phonics and
linguistics, and because I want to help students who have missed out on the basic
educational foundation of solid reading skills.

My Future Target Job

Write a description of your future target job, including the entry-level requirements and ongoing
professional development requirements which you identified in the job researched above.
Provide in-text citations for where you found your information. Include the resources in the
reference list below. 300-400 words (10 pts)

My future target job is to be a reading specialist in an elementary school. In order to

achieve my goal, there are specific requirements that I will need to complete in the state
of Georgia. I must receive my bachelors degree from a college or university. My degree
does not have to be an educational degree, and it does not have to include student
teaching or a teaching certificate right away. According to
TeacherCertificationDegrees.com, the preferred bachelors degree would be in reading
and literacy but I do not have to get this specific degree. This information was
important to me because I am currently working on an Educational Studies degree from
Arizona State University, and it will not have a teaching certificate or any student
teaching hours attached to it. When I graduate, I will simply have my bachelors degree.
After I complete my bachelors degree, I will need to continue a program of study to
obtain a teaching certificate. The state of Georgia has several alternative methods that I
could complete in order to get my teaching certificate. One of these methods comes
through GaTAPP, or the Georgia Teacher Academy for Preparation and Pedagogy.
Through this program, I could work in an elementary school for two or three years and
work on continuing education to complete my teaching certificate and my masters
degree (www.gaps.com). However, before I can work in a school, I will need to pass two
tests that are required for all educators in Georgia. The tests are called the GACE and
the GEEA. These assessments test my basic skills knowledge and my knowledge of
educational ethics (https://gace.ets.org/register). Finally, I will need to get a masters
degree in reading education. Georgia State University has a program that I could
complete, as do several online universities (http://education.gsu.edu/).

The professional development requirements after I complete my masters degree are

specific to the state of Georgia. According to an organization called Teach Tomorrow, in
order to have my teaching license for five years, I must finish 6 semester hours of
approved college credit or 10 Georgia Professional learning units or 10 continuing education
units (www.teachtomorrow.org).

Explain how the specific 21st Century skills will support you in your future target job. Cite
information from the 3 readings from this unit and to 1 outside reading. Include the resources in
the reference list below. 300-400 words (10 pts)

21st Century Skills will be essential for me in my future job. I will need to master as many
21st Century Skills as possible so that I can effectively pass them along to my students.
There are two skills in particular that I will need to work on before I become a teacher.
One of these is clear communication. According to an article from the P21 Framework,
communicating clearly involves articulating thoughts and ideas effectively using oral,
written, and nonverbal communication skills in a variety of forms and contexts
(www.p21.org). I have been working on my communication skills lately, and am
improving. However, I need to work on my nonverbal communication I can saw things
a little too sharply or without an open and listening expression on my face some of the
time. Another 21st Century Skill that I will need to work on is creativity and innovation. I
am one of those people who can get stuck in a routine or way of doing things, and can
lose sight of creativity, imagination, and inspiration about a project or job. According to
the Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills document, creativity and innovation
are ways of thinking (http://atc21s.org/). This means that my mindset must shift, and I
will need to look for new, fresh ideas in every part of my job.

There are also a few 21st Century Skills that I have become very familiar with in my recent
jobs and life circumstances. For Lesson 1, we read an article from the European
Parliament that talked about the process of learning to learn. According to the article,
learning to learn is the ability to pursue and persist in learning, to organize ones own
learning, including thorough effective management of time and information, both
effectively and in groups (www.britishcouncil.org). At my most recent job with
Starbucks, I have taken steps to learn as much as possible at every single shift I spend
on the job. Another set of 21st Century Skills that I have been able to use is a group of
skills that comes from an article by Rebecca Alber. According to the article, it is
important for the 21st Century learner to be able to manage, analyze, and synthesize
multiple streams of simultaneous information (Alber, 2013, p. 2). I often spend a lot of
time multitasking and working on projects for several parts of my life at once.
