Activity Description:
1. According to Adventure Experts online activity manual, the activity alligator
crossing is a team building activity that requires a series of different size
platforms set out approximately 6 to 8 feet apart.
2. The group must cross using a 6-foot board to get the team to the other side using
the platforms that becomes progressively smaller.
3. The objective is to get the entire group behind a line on the ground onto each
successive platform until they crossed the imaginary river without touching the
ground or loosing a group member.

progress throughout the entire activity and communicate with each other.

Leadership considerations: CTRS functions as a facilitator for the alligator crossing

activity and he/she will inform the participants of the rules and directions. It is
recommended that the therapist possesses interpersonal skills and team building skills.
Depending on the ability and level of functioning of the participants the therapist can use
alternative platforms sizes or number platforms to direct the individuals to cross the
platforms. The therapist should work with a maximum of 5 participants to avoid
distractions and assist participants. Before starting the activity, the therapist must gather
the participant explain the rules and activity directions in order to have a more effective
activity.

Adaptations: Participants with Amputations: NCA Bradford Woods' Low Universal

Course, built in 1997 by ABEE, Inc, was designed as a fully accessible challenge course.
Its greatest benefit is that it creates opportunities for people with physical disabilities to
experience team building and adventure in an inclusive atmosphere.
(NCAONLINE.ORG, 2016) Additionally, NCA recommends Low Universal Course
consist of elements that engage participants physically and mentally through the model
"Challenge by Choice." This allows group members to accept challenges at their own
comfort level and in turn increases their potential for success and personal growth.
Highlights of the Low Universal Course are the Alligator Crossing, Wire Traverse,
Grapevine Walk, All Aboard, and accessible ramps for people who use mobility devices.

Participant Visually Impair: There are 4 levels of visual function, normal vision,
moderate visual impairment, severe visual impairment, and blindness. According to the
International Classification of Diseases -10 (Update and Revision 2006): Depending on
visual classification of the individual the most independent and efficient adaptation is
"calling." Place the jumper on the runway at a three step approach distance, place the
caller facing jumper at end of sand pit, have caller yell "Here" and ask jumper to point
directly at caller to verify alignment. Then have caller yell through cupped hand, "Okay-
ready-go!-go!-go!-go!" The caller also has an abort command ("Stop!") if the jumper
veers off the runway. (Usaba.org, 2016)
