Advancing the Human Rights


of Women & Children
Thechallenge:InChiapas,over30%ofwomen
reporthavingexperienceddomesticviolenceand
manyreportabusebypublicauthorities.Without
agenciesintheregiontosupportthem,women
andchildrenarewithoutaccesstojusticeandbear
thebruntofsocialexclusion.Thisviolence
threatensmorethanthephysicaland
psychologicalwellnessofwomenandchildren;it
alsolimitstheeconomicdevelopmentoffamilies
andcommunities.Studiesshowthatadvancingthe
rightsandopportunitiesofwomenenablesthemto
participateinpoliticalandeconomicdecision
making,leadingtomoreinclusive,innovative,and
productivecommunities.

Ourresponse:TheAdvocacyProgramfor
WomenandChildrenseekstoendviolence
againstwomenandchildrenandtoempowerthem
asdecisionmakerswithintheircommunities.We
worktoequipwomenwiththeskillsandsupportto
beleadersintheircommunitiessothattheycan
increasetheircollectivevoiceinadvocacyefforts
toendviolenceandbuildacultureofrespectfor
humanrights.Whentheirrightsarerespected,
womenscapacitiesforsolvingproblemsand
creatinginnovativesolutionshelpcommunitiesto
growanddevelop.

staffwillincludeindigenouswomenfromthe
regionandworkdirectlyincollaborationwith
otherindigenouswomen,includingyoung
womenandvillagepromoters,todevelop
knowyourrightsmaterials,radioprograms,
workshops,presentations,andregional
forumsandtoparticipateinexchangeswith
womenengagedinsimilarworkinother
areas.

ofyourgiftsothatcommunitiesdeveloptheskillstheyneedtosolvetheirown
developmentchallenges.Byinvestingincommunityeducationandleadership
training,youhelpindigenouswomenprotecthumanrightsandfindavoicewithin
theircommunities.

TheAdvocacyProgramwillworkforshorttermremediesandlongtermchange
byempoweringwomenandgirlstobestrongleadersanddecisionmakerswithin
theircommunities.TheProgramwillpromotethehumanrightsofwomenand
childrenintheregion,implementingandinnovatingstrategiesthatstrengthenthe
roleofwomeninindigenouscommunities.

TheCenterforIndigenousRights(CEDIAC),OneEqualHeartspartnerin
Chiapas,hasover20yearsofexperienceinpromotinganddefendingthehuman
rightsofindigenousindividualsandcommunities.Since1992,CEDIAChas
providedongoingadvocacyandmonitoringofcasesofhumanrightsviolations
againstindividualsintheregion,andprovidedspecializedtrainingfortraditional
TseltalmediatorsthatcombinesskillbuildingforadvocacyinboththeMexican
stateandtraditionalTseltaljuridicalsystems.TheAdvocacyProgramfor
IndigenousWomenandChildrenisbuildingonthisstrongfoundationbyengaging
ateamofhumanrightspromotersandtraditionalmediatorstoassessthescopeof
theproblemofviolenceanddevelopstrategiesforinterventionandcommunity
education.
