Journal Article
Movea (now known as InvenSense) is a company in the
Consumer Electronics industry. They create MotionTracking
Sensors and other motion control products. Recently, Movea
introduced MotionCore, an API allowing apps to connect with
sensors from any manufacturer. With this comes the ability for
mobile-device manufacturers to use a wide range of sensors in
order to create new applications and systems.
Movea made some demo apps to display these new
capabilities. One example is an air signature app that will unlock
the phone based on how it is waved. My favorite was an indoor
navigation app which I feel could be particularly helpful in big
buildings, like schools or hospitals, in order to help others find
rooms with ease.

Common Interest Article

Stanford computer scientists have created an artificially
intelligent algorithm that detects skin cancer. The creators of this
algorithm collected about 130,000 images of skin lesions that
came to represent over 2,000 different diseases. This collection
is what the algorithm based its diagnosis on. Outstandingly, it
matched the performance of board-certified dermatologists. The
algorithm diagnosed cancerous and non-cancerous lesions in
over 370 images.
The great thing about computer science and technology in
general, is that things like this are being developed almost every
day. Technology is becoming extremely expansive in that it is
something that can be applied to almost, if not every, career field
in the world. Its wide-range is the reason I decided to choose
computer science as my major and its ability to alter lives with
things such as this skin cancer detector is what makes the field so
influential.

Key Critical Terms for Computer Science

Majors
1. Data Structures- any of various methods or formats (as an
array, file, or record) for organizing data in a computer
2. Artificial Intelligence- a branch of computer science dealing
with the simulation of intelligent behavior in computers
3. Coding-the act of creating a set of instructions for a computer
4. Binary- a number system based only on the numerals 0 and 1
5. Trojan Horse- a seemingly useful computer program that
contains concealed instructions which when activated perform
an illicit or malicious action (such as destroying data files)
6. Language- the words, and the methods of combining them
used and understood by a computer program
7. Application- a program (such as a word processor or a
spreadsheet) that performs a particular task or set of tasks
8. Boolean- of, relating to, or being a logical combinatorial system
(as Boolean algebra) that represents symbolically relationships
(as those implied by the logical operators AND, OR, and NOT)
between entities (as sets, propositions, or on-off computer
circuit elements)
9. Interpreter- a computer program that executes each of a set of
high-level instructions before going to the next instruction
10. Software- the entire set of programs, procedures, and
related documentation associated with a computer system

Style Guide
There is no specified standard of writing for computer science majors.
However, the most widely used styles are APA, IEEE, and ACM. I will be
discussing APA.

The basic elements of this style are:

1. The entire document is double-spaced.
2. APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Include a page header
(also known as the "running head") at the top of every page. To create a page
header/running head, insert page numbers flush right.
3. There are no bold, oversized, or decorative fonts allowed
