Spring 2016/2017

Objectives:
1) Be familiar with centrifugal casting.
2) Inspect different casting defects and identify the
reason for each one.
3) Identify the advantages and disadvantages of
centrifugal casting.

Introduction:
In this experiment we will see the centrifugal casting and
its steps to producing products , it is also known as the
spinning casting .the mold is made from silicon and the
alloys used is zinc based alloy with low melting point.
The centrifugal casting helps us produce thin products
with mass production rate and can be used for precise
detailed products and requires less finishing processes.

Questions and answers:

Q1) Name the machines we have seen during the
experiment and write a brief paragraph about each one of
them.
1) Electrically heated press & Melting furnace:
This machine uses electricity to melt the material
and keep it isolated from room temperature.

2) Spin- Caster machine:

This machine is where we put the mold and then we
add the molten metal from a hole at top after that we
start the machine, it will begin to spin according to
specified time then it automatically stops and we get
the mold out and get the products.

Q2) describe the procedure for centrifugal casting as we

have done in the experiment (attach pictures).

We bake the pattern in the electrically heated press then

we make the mold and channels to let the molten metal
fill in after that we put the pattern in the spinning
machine and we pour the molten metal from the top
though a hollow after that we set the time for the
machine and start it , the machine will spin and will stop
automatically when the specified time is reached , we
take the pattern out remove the extra metal and get our
products (usually 8-12 product per mold) (pictures on
next page).

Q3) List Three advantages of centrifugal casting.

1) Good tolerance
2) Good for mass production
3) Good surface finish

Q4) List Three disadvantages of centrifugal casting.

1) Cannot produce complex geometric shapes.
2) air can be trapped in the mold and can create defects
3) Density of material in the cast part is greater at outer
side and lesser at inner side

Q5) What are the specifications for alloys used in

centrifugal casting?
They should have low melting point because the pattern
is made of silicon and is used many times
