Introduction

My goal when developing a classroom management plan is to make sure that transitions are

smooth, expectations are clear, and a classroom community is constantly being developed and

improved upon. This basic idea and structure will be implemented from day one to set a

precedent for the rest of the school year. This will allow student to become familiar and

comfortable with the daily rules, procedures, and consequences immediately.

Explanation

In order to develop a safe, orderly, and effective classroom I have prepared a few documents to

start my year off strong. My procedures allow more freedom that I remember having when I was

in high school. This freedom is key because when school starts it is important to identify the

target behaviors in your classroom because they most likely will be different in each class

(Bucher, 2013, P.12). Allowing the freedom to be able to get up and use the bathroom if the pass

is there, may limit the amount of people that abuse the bathroom pass because they are allowed

to go on their own time without raising their hands in front of the class and getting that attention.

Another freedom aspect is allowing food and drinks in class, because I do not think it is fair to

deprive students of necessities as long as it is not majorly distracting to others around them. I do

think allowing students to do late work is important, because it is important for students to still

learn about what the other students had learned about, even if it is for less credit.

My basic rules consist of participating, being respectful, and always putting forth your best

effort. These three basic rule are important for a classroom, because they include everything

from respecting the teacher and peers in all different situation, being proud of what your doing,

and always being ready to work while in class and having the necessary supplies. Explaining
these rules at the beginning of class each semester is critical. This [is] important in helping the

children to see the need for the rule and therefore, to accept it (Marzano, 2003, P.16). If students

accept the reasons behind the rules and accept it, they are more likely to follow and agree with

them.

My consequences for not obeying the procedure and rules start with meetings with me because I

want the student to be responsible for their actions before their parents are contacted, and their

last consequence would be going to the principles office. Reserving the right to skip any of these

consequences, if the act was outrageous, is important too, because something like getting into a

physical fight in the classroom would be handled by the principle.

Gordon believes that teachers need to modify their classroom environmentsteachers know

from experience, most classrooms unfortunately are designed, over structured, and furnished in

ways that make if difficult for students to stay motivated and involved in the learning process

(Bucher, 2013, P.56). The classroom layout that I designed is actually inspired by one of my

teachers that I had in High School. I really enjoyed this layout, because the teachers allowed us

to pick where we sat, so if we felt like we needed to face the board we had that option without

being excluded from class discussion. I decided to have about thirteen chairs against one wall

facing in, about sixteen chairs on the back wall facing the board, then about nine chairs between

the teachers desk at the front and the chairs facing forward, but they will be facing the thirteen

chairs on the opposite wall. Storage and shelving will be placed behind desks, and a couch can

provide a relaxing reading area within the class. This layout also provides a perfect environment

for discussion, because all of the students can see each other and the teacher can walk up and

down the aisle to encourage active participation. I also placed the overhead projector in the
center of the room, because an overhead projector [needs to be] in place for daily use. This is

practically a must (Emmer, 2006, P.11). Although teachers have little influence over

environmental design, they should know how school design contributes to a safe classroom and

schools (Bucher, 2013, P.25). This in my opinion, should encourage teachers to push themselves

to develop a design and follow through with it in order to provide support for the students to be

successful.

My Ideal Classroom

When designing my classroom, I assumed that I would have typical high school
classroom desks. I decided to make a change on the typical layout, by facing the
desks in different directions. There will be rows so students can easily get to and
from their seat and everyone will still be able to see the board at the front if
needed. The classroom will be set up in a way that encourages discussion, because
there will be a large aisle that the teacher can walk up and down and the students
will somewhat be facing each other. The teacher will be sitting in the front of the
classroom, at a typical teachers desk with different areas for turn in different
assignments and so on. In order to create a positive atmosphere, it is important to
make discussion very important within the classroom so that students are able to
learn not only from the teacher but from each other as well.
