StartingTorque
Startuptorqueisusedtodetermineifanenginestarter,orelectricmotordriverhasenoughtorqueto
startacompressor.

Startuptorqueischaracterizedbytwomaincomponents,breakawaytorqueandspeeduptorque.
Thebreakawaytorqueisthestaticfrictionandgasloadonthepistonrodareaatzerorpm.Thespeed
uptorqueisthedynamicfrictionandthepressureloadonthecylindersastheunitspeedsuptowardfull
speed.

ArielprovidesstartuptorquedatawithintheArielPerformanceProgram.Allstartuptorque
calculationsprovidedassumethatabypassorgasrecirculationlineisinstalledandopen,sizedto
bypass100%ofthecompressorflow.

Thebreakawaytorqueisdependentonthepressureontheunitwhenthestartbuttonispushed.
Higherstartuppressureswillresultinhigherbreakawaytorque.Ifthebreakawaytorquemustbe
reducedforstarting,thepressureontheunitmustbereduced.Sixthrowunitsaremostlyexemptfrom
thisasthephasingofthesixthrowsoffersacancellationoftheindividualthrowtorquesfromthe
pressureonthepistonrod.

Thespeeduptorquecanbeimpactedbyboththestartingpressure,aswellasthebypasslinepressure
loss.Smallerbypasslineswillhavehigherpressurelosses,resultinginhighertorquesastheunit
approachesfullspeed.

StartUpTorqueCalculations:

Usethehighestsuctionpressurethattheunitwillseewhenthestartbuttonispushed.Thismay
beanormal(max)suctionpressure,orasettleoutpressure.
Loadallmanualcapacitydevices(closeVVCPs,removespacers,doubleactcylindersifvalves
areremovedmanuallyforsingleactingcases).
Unloadallpanelcontrolledcapacitydevices(openFVCPs,singleactifSVUsareprovided)
Considerandcalculatethebypasslinepressurelossesforamoreaccuratetorquecurve.
Applythefinalflywheelinertiafromthetorsionalanalysisandcurrentpulsationanalysisforthe
finalstartuptorquecalculation

BypassLinePressureLosses:

Arielprovidesanentryforthebypasslinepressureloss.Thisisavaluemultipliedbythenumber
ofstages,foratotalpressureloss.
Thedefaultvalueis25psitimesthenumberofstages.Thisisonlyaroughvalueforabeginning
assumption.
ThestartuptorquecalculationwillincludeaflowatStartup.Applythisvaluewhencalculating
thebypasslinepressureloss.Atthelowerratiosofstartup(bypasslineopen)theflowcanbe
muchhigherthanthecompressordesignflow.
