Hello, my name is Kya Karine, and I am representing the University of

Utah Jazz Club. We are looking to get this grant to hire some of the
world-class musicians that will be in town performing Kris Johnsons Jim
Crows Tears to come to the University of Utah and hold an open to the
public master class in addition to the open rehearsals they have
already been booked for. This added class would give students and
local musicians the opportunity to seize the moment and learn from
world-class musicians in a hands-on intimate setting and to build
lasting professional connections.

$500 breakdown for the payment of the musicians: These musicians

typically charge $100 an hour for a private lesson with an individual
student. Being as this is the equivalent of teaching at least 30 students
at once and the proposed session is 2 hours, that would equate to
having to pay each musician $6,000. Times that by 6 for the proposed
6 musicians we are looking to hire, and thats $36,000. Thats quite a
lot of money. We have found that (and the musicians agree) $500 per
person for a two hour session with at least 30 eager students is
acceptable compensation; this would not only pay for their time and
expertise, but also for any supplemental teaching materials they will
prepare for the event.

How we have publicized this event: Kris Johnson has put up posters
around the school of music (money acquired separately through the
School of Music), an email has been sent out to all students in the
University of Utah music department (not just Jazz) about it, and we
have reached out to the following schools: Snow, BYU, UVU, Utah State,
Westminster, Judge Catholic High School, Salt Lake School for the
Performing Arts. In addition, Kris Johnson and many of the University of
Utah Jazz students have taken it upon themselves to advertise on their
personal social media accounts.

Specific Rehearsal Timeline: The events they have been booked and
included in their outside payment for the show on March 10th:

University of Utah
7-9 PM: Strings/orchestra Room 272 DGH University of Utah
