Councilmember Sam Pedroza thanked the commis-

is, one of those reasons why this city stands out from
the others.
Its a very rare thing that cities do this type of ef-

help so many different organizations throughout the
city.
Councilmember Corey Calaycay abstained on vot-
ing on one program that is set to receive funding, Fair-
plexs Big Yellow Bus Program, as he is also a part-time
employee of Fairplex.
Other than that, the program passed unanimously.
The city also approved the purchase and retrofit of
hundreds of streetlights peppered throughout Clare-
mont. The purchase is phase II of a city plan to convert
all streetlights in the city to energy-efficient LED bulbs,
according to Principal Planner Chris Veirs.
The lights being purchased are classified as LS-1,
which have the highest monthly tariffs for lights in the
city. The sale of these poles were approved by the Pub-
lic Utilities Commission (PUC) in 2012 but stopped in
2016. According to Mr. Veirs, Claremont slipped in just
under the deadline.

CHS golf notches victory on slick South Hills course

S
outh Hills High School golf sure
does have some swanky digs. Mar-
shall Canyon Golf Course, where
Claremont plays its home matches, is
pretty nice, and the mule deer that live
there do give the place a sincere woodsy
feel.
But the South Hills Country Club where the
Huskies play is really spectacular. The fairways are as
finely manicured as the greens on
most courses with scarcely a divot SPORTING
to be found. There are signs posted LIFE
everywhere reminding guests that the dress code is
strictly enforced, but the staff was far from snooty and
quite helpful when a reporter inquired about the loca-
tion of the high school players. In addition, the club
offers the course for free to the high school players
just to support young golfers.
The Pack was fortunate to be guests at South Hills
on Tuesday for the penultimate match of their 2016
season. Coach Terrance Lynch did have to remind a
couple of his players about the dress code and that
they were required to carry their bags.
Nonetheless, it was a good outing for the boys, who
narrowly defeated South Hills 237-240, advancing
their league record to 3-8. The low score for the day COURIER photos/Steven Felschundneff

Chaparral assemblies showcase the art, love of poetry

O
n Friday, April 21, Chaparral held its annual po-
etry assemblies, which are timed each year to
coincide with National Poetry Month.
The event, organized by Chaparral parent Courtney
Thomas, included separate assemblies for students in grades
K-3 and those in fourth through sixth grades. There was
also an open-mic reading during the students lunch pe-
riods, where any kid who wanted to read a poem was en-
couraged to take the mic.
This is the first year for the latter part of the schools
National Poetry Month commemoration. Ms. Thomas and
Chaparral Principal Lisa Yamashita agreed that the spo-
ken-word forums were a great idea, because only one stu-
dent from each class is able to read a poem at the assem-
blies. The first open mic drew more than 40 kids, while
some 30 upper graders read during their lunch.
Ms. Thomas has a fifth grader at Chaparral, her
daughter Isabella, better known as Izzy. Its the sixth year
that Ms. Thomas has arranged the poetry assemblies. She
instituted the tradition when her son, now at Claremont
High School, was attending Chaparral.

Mr. Copenhaver won the car Sunday during the an-

Mr. Copenhaver said he sold a number of the raffle
tickets to help his 14-year-old daughter Danyele and
the class of 2020 boosters. As a thank-you, CEF gave
him a couple of tickets and he bought a couple as well.
Mr. Copenhaver was at a Yoga retreat over the
weekend and was out of cell phone reception, so he
did not find out about the win until he turned on his
phone Sunday evening to find numerous missed calls
and texts from his family.
The car will replace the 2005 Toyota Corolla his
wife Lisa currently drives. The couple plans to take
