American business is driven by competition and the pursuit of profit. Businesses are mostly privately owned but also include public and nonprofit organizations. Competition protects values like freedom and equality of opportunity by preventing monopoly and ensuring quality. It also encourages hard work and reinforces the ideal that anyone can become rich through business success. Entrepreneurs are often seen as heroes for achieving the American dream starting from nothing. However, large corporations and their CEOs are more controversial figures. The modern American workforce has become more diverse but discrimination still exists.
