Career advancement refers to growth in a job from an entry-level position to a higher position
such as management. It can also refer to growth that results from a career change to a higher
position in a related occupation. In both cases, career advancement requires training and
experience and involves movement to a position of greater responsibility.

Many individuals look for constant challenges in their daily lives, and working in the same
position for an extended period of time can become mundane. Moving up the ladder to a
position that holds greater authority and/or responsibility can provide these individuals with
the type of stimulation that they need.

For those who think that advancement in their career may be something for them, it is important
that they learn about potential career paths and are aware of the things that they need to do
in order to move up the ladder. Employees that demonstrate strong abilities in their positions
can often move laterally among different entry-level positions. However, senior positions
require many years of experience, and many even depend on additional training and education.
For most positions, candidates being considered for a promotion must demonstrate strong
leadership ability and good business skills.

Advancing in an occupation can bring many advantages including higher salary and greater

is very important to know as much as possible about the options. Students considering IE as a
major, or any engineering field for that matter, should be able to easily learn about the variety
of jobs an IE might have. Currently, not much information is easily attainable regarding the life of
IEs. The IMSE website provides very brief descriptions of different IE job titles, but beyond that
students cannot learn much about IE careers without diving deep into the Internet.

The compilation of this IE careers resource document provides prospective and new IE students
with an opportunity to learn about the potential career paths that an Industrial Engineering
degree could lead to. The seven different profiles in this document are just a few of the careers
available to IEs, but these alone demonstrate the large variety of career options for those in IE.
By looking at this document someone who is unfamiliar with IE is also able to see that a degree
from the IMSE department provides one with skillsets that allow movement to many different
positions and potential for promotion through hard work. Overall, this IE career profiles resource
document builds a foundation about IE careers and decreases uncertainty regarding career
