Humans Vs. Technology

Should we be worried about robots in the near future? Many people believe that

robots and machines are going to take over the work force in America and other high

population areas as well as possibly take over the human race. Although Robots and

machines will replace certain jobs, they will never take over the work force, and they will

never be able to take over the world. Robots will not be able to take every job away

because there will always be things that humans can do and robots cannot do, with the

creation of robots, there will also be new jobs that are created, and robots wont be able to

take over the world because robots can only do what we program them to do.

Robots will not be able to take every job away because there will always be things

that robots cannot do and humans must do. There are some jobs that require extreme

precision and the slightest of movements can destroy this process. There are many jobs

that robots cant do. For example a robot cant replace teachers, psychologists, scientists,

doctors, and many more. One of the reasons why robots cannot take these jobs away is

because psychologists, teachers, and doctors/nurses all have to be able to connect to their

patient, or student, emotionally. A robot is simply not capable of this and in they will

never be able to replace humans in that area. (add a quote here) Many people may think

that a robot can replace things like doctors and scientists. While robots are able to aid

doctors in their surgeries, they are not able to perform the surgery. They are simply there
Johnson 2

to do things like have tools readily available and provide lighting for now. Although,

technology is moving at a rapid pace, and they will be able to do more complicated tasks

in the surgery, they will never be able to replace the precision and stability of the human

hand. When it comes to robots and the workplace, there are obviously going to be some

jobs that are replaced with robots.

With the creation of robots, there will also be new jobs that are created that are

directly related to these robots. Many of the jobs that have been created in the past

century could not have even been imagined before then, therefore we can assume that

there will be jobs within the next century that humans cant even imagine in the present

moment. This statement will always be true as long as technology is advancing. As Marc

Andreessen stated Just as most of us today have jobs that werent even invented 100

years ago, the same will be true 100 years from now. There will be so many other jobs

opportunities that open up because of these robots. For example, we will need mechanics

that work on these robots, people that program the robots, and people that engineer these

robots. These robots are always going to be updated and reinvented in every single way

imaginable, so we are going to need as many engineers and scientists as we can to insure

that these robots are up to date. Robots cannot replace humans for the simple fact that

robots need electricity. What happens when there is a power outage all across a city or

even in a factory? People are going to be able to depend on robots to go fix the problem

because they will not have power. Humans are the most dependable machines and

nothing can change that. This is the more logical side of the controversy that is involved

in this topic, but when you dig deeper into the thoughts and ideas of many Americans,

you find that they have a lot of interesting fears about robots.
Johnson 3

Many people fear the unknown and although it is not known which and when

these jobs will be replaced, some people have an even greater fear that these robots could

possibly take over the world. Robots will never be able to take over the world because a

robot can only do what you program it to. In other words, a robot can only take over the

world if it is specifically programmed to do that, and each government is going to have to

come up with new laws to regulate which types of robots can be created and who can

create them. Robots could never take over the world because in order for them to be able

to come close, they would have to be able to think independently which is also known as

artificial intelligence. There are many people who think that because, as Alan Brown

states, robots are learning to communicate with each other through the cloud and they are

able to share information allowing them to learn faster than a human (1), they are able

to learn faster and further than humans. Although robots can learn faster than humans,

they cannot learn further than humans. A human can teach a robot to do research and

perform experiments, however, they cant program a robot to make a new hypothesis

based off of the results of the experiments. The only way a robot can come up with a

correct and valid hypothesis is if the scientist programming the robot already knows the

result of the experiment. Then, the experiment would be pointless unless you are trying to

perform the experiment over and over to test for different results. In this situation, if the

robot does come across a difference in the experiment, the only thing it can do is tell the

user that there was a different result, it will not be able to conclude anything from that

opposite result.

Another reason why robots will never be able to take over or destroy the human

race is because we would never create something without a way of stopping it. We will
Johnson 4

always have something that can destroy robots. One of the things the military has today is

an EMP. It will take out anything electric within a 400 km radius, or 248.5 miles. This

would completely stop any sort of robot that could cause harm. This EMP doesnt affect

humans, and it doesnt cause any collateral damage so it is ideal for a situation like this.

Just like mentioned above, we do not know what the future has in store for us, but we can

rest assured that humans are not dumb enough to build something that can not be

destroyed with the push of a button.

This is the future, and people have to be ready for it, or it is going to bite them in

the back. How does one get ready for something so serious and life changing? Will

everybody have to have college degrees and amass huge sums of student loan debt in

order to insure they arent left behind. No, people dont have to get a college degree in

order to be knowledgeable. There are many different options that you can take. One of

them being online learning website like Kahn academy. This is a wonderful website

where you can learn just about every single science there is to learn, and it is all for free.

Many people believe that nobody is going to hire somebody that doesnt even have a

college degree, but in most situations, if you show the employer that you know your stuff

then they will be more than willing to hire you. This is how it is in many cases, and many

people dont realize this because they never took advantage of these free websites and

free information all over the Internet.

Although this is a good idea on paper, we have to consider it in the real world. It

would cost a lot of money to advertise to the whole world about these websites, and a

college student definitely doesnt have enough money or time to follow through with

these kinds of ideas. Therefore, teachers and staff in elementary schools, middle schools,
Johnson 5

and high schools should be promoting these kinds of websites in everything they do.

These kinds of websites would even make teachers jobs easier because the students will

go online to these courses and learn the material themselves. The school boards should

even go as far as to require each class to visit these websites during school every so often

to ensure that the students know and understand how to use them. Then the teacher

wouldnt have to spend so much time explaining it in class because the students already

know the material. It would be in the teachers best interest to promote these websites,

then when the kids get older and have more questions, their middle school and high

school teachers can point them to these websites. The student will already be familiar

with these types of websites because they have used them all throughout their elementary

school years.

We will not be able to be replaced by robots because there are things that robots

just simply cant do. They also will never be able to take over the world because they can

only do things that we program them to do. The future is coming, and robots will be

aiding us in our everyday actions. We need to be ready for that and not fear the inevitable.

The people of this world can start to prepare for this future by integrating self learning

websites into the school systems and allow the students to learn as fast and as far as they

would like. Another very controversial topic when considering robots is robots in

warfare. They would be able to take out many people without damage and it would give

the side with the robots an unfair advantage. This is something that needs to be addressed

in another essay.
