Student Choice Project: Digital Citizenship

Over time, technology has become progressively more advanced. Almost everything we

do or use involves the usage of a computer or device with internet access. The influence of this

massive technological revolution ranges from our personal lives to our professional lives. As the

world continues to evolve and transition deeper into technology, it is imperative that we keep up

to date with the advancements in order to survive. Studying the digital citizenship top ten list for

safe and healthy use of educational technology is a good way to begin as it covers the most

important concepts and knowledge to know when using and handling technology.

The first and most important item on the list is becoming familiar or comfortable with

technology. One of the biggest reasons that people are intimidated by technology is because they

do not understand it. Humans are naturally frightened of the unknown. Due to the fear associated

with technology, many assume that it is too difficult to learn and do not bother to try.

Knowledge is key to overcoming these fears. Once people begin to understand concept, it

becomes less frightening and easier to grasp. Try making an effort to read up on technology.

Learn what those different buttons do or what parts help a computer function.

The second item is physical safety. When learning about how to use devices like

computers, it is important to understand how to keep yourself safe. While computers are

relatively harmless, there are precautions to consider. It is especially important when building a

computer from scratch. Always read and follow the manual carefully. Know what the different
cords do and where they should be plugged in. You could potentially shock yourself if you are

not careful. For example, you should always handle electronic components on a non-conducting

surface. You should also consider the environment you are building your computer in. If the area

is heavily carpeted or subjected to high variations in temperature, it is best to build the computer

somewhere else. (Safety Precautions in Handling Computers, 2012)

The third item is troubleshooting. Even the best computers can have issues. When

complications arise, it is important to know basic troubleshooting techniques. No matter what's

causing the issue, troubleshooting will always be a process of trial and error. (Computer Basics:

Basic Troubleshooting Techniques, n.d.) However, there are some general tips to keep in mind.

For example, if the computer is not turning on, check to make sure the cables are plugged in

properly. Sometimes the issue may be fixed by simply restarting the computer. If all else fails,

dont be afraid to ask a professional for advice or help.

The fourth item on the list is learning how to properly handle your devices. There are

many different ways that a computer can become irreversibly damaged if one is not careful.

Protecting your computer can help avoid high repair costs and to keep important files and

information safe. Knowing what you should and shouldnt do with or around a computer can

help you become more aware of dangerous situations and ensure the safety of your own devices.

For example, you should always be careful with foods or drinks around the computer. Another

thing to consider is plugging the computer and monitor into a surge protector to keep it from

being damaged physically by storms and other things that can cause surges and voltage spikes in

the electrical components of your computer. (Feldman, 2008)

The fifth item on the list is maintenance for longevity. After knowing how to handle your

devices, the next step is to maintain your computers life. A computer will eventually break down

over time. In order to avoid paying a lot of money to constantly replace your computer, it will be

more beneficial in the long run to keep it as healthy as possible. There are many small things you

can do that will help your computer survive longer. For example, keeping your computer clean

from dust is a good start. Over time the build-up of dust can affect reliability and most definitely

shorten the life expectancy of the device. (Sutton, 2016)

The sixth item is ergonomics. Ergonomics is the study of peoples efficiency in their

working environment. Many people work in conditions that can be stressful on your body. It may

even have a negative impact on your health in the long-term. Knowing how to be efficient with

your work environment can improve your proficiency in working and prevent potential health

injuries. For example, many people tend to reach for commonly used items while working on the

computer. This causes your arms, wrist, or body to constantly twist in awkward positons which

may cause strain. One way to correct this is to simply move the item closer or within easy reach.

(Problems & Solutions, 2012)

The seventh item on the list is theft prevention. Expensive devices like computers and

laptops are a high target for thieves. You can easily lose them if you are not careful. Not only

would you have to pay to get a replacement, you could potentially lose extremely important files.

There are tips and precautions that can help prevent your devices being stolen. One tip is to never

leave your devices in a vehicle; especially in plain sight. Another is applying distinct markings to

identify your computer. Sometimes losing or having your computer stolen is inevitable, but

another thing you can do is consistently back up your important files and information for

emergencies. (Tips for Preventing Theft, n.d.)

The eighth item is online etiquette. Once you have a comprehensive understanding of

computers and know how to take care of them, the next step is learning online etiquette. When

you use computers, you connect with the internet which in return, connects you with many

people around the world. It can be easy to become disconnected from human interaction through

the computer, but it is important to understand that those who you interact with are real people.

The general rule is to treat others the way you want to be treated. It is also important to

remember not to believe everything that you see on the internet. There are millions of articles on

the internet, but not all of them are accurate or real. Use common sense and search for facts

before using or sharing. Just because its written online doesnt mean its true. (Allen, 2016)

The ninth item on the list is safety on the internet. When using the internet, it can be easy

to have your computer infected with malicious viruses or even be scammed if youre not careful.

Its important to be cautious and aware. You should never share your personal information with

anyone. There are many tips for safety regarding viruses, such as avoiding unsolicited emails or

attachments, links, and forms from people you do not know. Be cautious of downloading

anything from an untrustworthy website. Use strong passwords to protect your information and

install protective software such as anti-viruses. (Top Ten Safe Computing Tips, n.d.)

The tenth and final item on the list is monitoring children on the internet. As the world

dives deeper into technology, so do children. Therefore it is important to ensure we educate

children on how to utilize the internet safely. Children must be taught how to recognize potential

predators online and to never reveal any sensitive information. With social media, it is important

to remind children that once once its out there, its out there so they should watch what they

post and say. (SAFE Technology, n.d.) It is also important to address cyber-bullying with

children and discuss what course of action should be taken if they are in that situation.
