Chapter 1Standard Operating Procedure for


Configuring IBM LTO 3581-F38 for Netbackup
Server

1.1Introduction

This document is for performing basic configuration of the IBM LTO 3581-F38 Tape
Library. This procedure needs to be done to allow connections between the Veritas
Netback Master Server and the Tape Library.

1.2Pre-requirements

• Labeled tape cartridges (media)

• Tape library is turned on.

1.3Procedure:

1. Enable Barcode Reader:

a. At the Operator Control Panel, press Cancel until Information appears.

b. Press Next to go to Go Offline. Press Enter.

c. Press Next twice to go to Configuration. Press Enter.

d. Press Next until Barcode Reader appears. Press Enter.

e. Change to ON. Press Enter.


2. Optional: Configure TCP/IP settings (the IP is for management console only):

a. At the Operator Control Panel, press Cancel until Information appears.

b. Press Next to go to Go Offline. Press Enter.

c. Press Next twice to go to Configuration. Press Enter.

d. Press Next until Net Parameter appears. Press Enter twice to change to
ON.

e. Press Next until IP Address. Press Enter.

f. Change IP to: 172.18.100.12 using the Next button. Press Enter after
every digit. Press Enter when done.

g. Press Next until Netmask. Press Enter.

h. Change Netmask to: 255.255.255.0 using Next button. Press Enter after
every digit. Press Enter when done.

3. To insert all labeled or specific media in the library (this was done during first
time tape library configuration. The tapes were put into place according to slot
sequence, starting with slot 1 until slot 8). This procedure can also be used to
import back a tape:

a. At the Operator Control Panel, press Cancel until Information appears.

b. Press Next to go to Go Offline. Press Enter.

c. Press Next –Command – Enter – Next until Import – Enter –select


port – Enter – put tapes (put in the first tape) – Enter. (If there is a

specific tape to be put in, then slot in the required media into the slot.) Put
in the rest of the tapes one by one.

d. After last tape has been inserted, press Cancel twice until enable BCR
appears – Next until Go Online – Enter.

Note: Wait until library has finished performing inventory (hardware


inventory) before performing any other activities from Netbackup Console.

e. Perform robot inventory using Netbackup Administration Console. Refer to


Chapter 2.

4. From the Veritas Master Server, verify the tape library is installed.
Right-click My Computer, go to Manage. At Device Manager, Medium
Changer and Tape Drives are available and working properly.

5. Optional: Test ping from Master Server to tape library.


Note: If necessary, power off the library. Then power it on again.

6. Optional: Exporting a Media From the Tape Library

a. At the Operator Control Panel, press Cancel until Information appears.

b. Press Next to go to Go Offline. Press Enter.

c. Press Next – Command – Enter – Next – Next – Export – Enter. Select


any media (preferably a Scratch media) to take out.

d. Press Enter to take out the media.

Chapter 2Performing Robot Inventory Using Veritas


Netbackup Administration Console

2.1Introduction

This is an excerpt of the VERITAS NetBackup™ 6.0 Media Manager System


Administrator’s Guide for Windows document regarding robot inventory.

2.2Procedures

Step 1: Accessing the Robot Inventory Dialog

a. In the NetBackup Administration Console, select Media and Device


Management - Media - Robots.

b. Select the robot you want to inventory or commonly TLD(0).

c. Select Actions > Inventory Robot.

Step 2: Using the Robot Inventory Dialog


a) To show robot contents

i. In the Inventory operation section of the Robot Inventory dialog,


select Show contents. To clear any previous display in the Results
section, click Clear Results.

ii. Click Start to start the inventory.

iii. The inventory report appears in the Results section of the dialog.

b) To compare robot contents with the volume configuration

i. In the Inventory operation section of the Robot Inventory dialog, select


Compare contents with volume configuration. To clear any
previous display in the Results section, click Clear Results.

ii. Click Start to start the compare. Media Manager requests an inventory
from the selected robotic library and compares the results from the
robot with the contents of the EMM database.

iii. If the report shows that the EMM database does not match the
contents of the robotic library, do one of the following:

• Physically move the volume.

• Correct the condition by using Media and Device Management


> Media - Actions - Move or by updating the volume
configuration as explained in procedure “To Update the Volume
Configuration” below.

Compare contents with volume configuration

c) Updating the Volume Configuration for a Robot

i. In the Inventory operation section of the Robot Inventory dialog, select


Update volume configuration. For more options, click Advanced
Options. For most configurations, the default settings work well. You
should only change the settings if your configuration has special
hardware or usage requirements.

ii. To preview any update changes for the configuration, select Preview
changes.

iii. To move (inject) one or more volumes in the robot’s media access port
into the robotic library before initiating the update, select Empty
media access port prior to update.

iv. To clear any previous display in the Results section, click Clear
Results.

v. Click Start to start the update (or the preview).

vi. If you selected Preview changes and any recommended changes are
found, the dialog will ask if you want to accept the recommended
changes shown in the Results section. Click Yes to perform the update
with the recommended changes.

Chapter 3Performing Drive Cleaning

3.1Introduction

The procedure listed below is taken from the IBM System Storage Tape Library
Guide for Open Systems Redbook. Please consult this Redbook for detailed
explanations on the features and functions of IBM 3581-F38 tape library.

3.2Procedure

a. Free a slot to put in the cleaning tape. Refer to Chapter 1, 1.3 item no. 6
to export media.

b. After the media is ejected out, put in the cleaning tape. Then wait until the
tape library has finished performing an inventory (done automatically by
the library, no user intervention needed).

c. Press Cancel until you see Command. Press Enter and then press Next
until you see Clean Drive. Press Enter.

d. After the tape library has finished performing the drive cleaning, export out
the cleaning tape (if it is not automatically ejected out).

e. Import back the media that was taken out previously. Refer to Chapter 1 –
1.3, item 3.

The figure below is a chart of the Offline menu of the tape library. Use it as a
reference guide for performing any task using the Operator Control Panel on the
tape library.
