How a digital image is created:

The binary system works off of a 2 letter alphabet, and each binary number is called a bit.

A byte is just an 8-bit word.

Matrix is a series of boxes laid out in rows and columns that gives form to the image
Each individual box in the matrix are called pixels
The bit depth is basically how many gray levels there are on the image when it converts

to digital.
The areas on an x-ray that do not turn out the way they should can be corrected on DR

because they have better exposure latitude.

DR can either be indirect meaning with light, or direct without using light.

Indirect detectors use a scintillator and a photodetector and include the ones used in CR

and DR, as well as CCD and amorphous silicon with a TFT. A CCD converts light to an

electrical charge, and the light produced form the x-ray interaction have to be coupled

with optics to the CCD chip. Once the CCD chip is hit, it gives off an electrical charge
7
that is sent to the ADC where it creates the binary code for the computer to understand

and form an image. In the CMOS, it uses a scintillator to direct the light to the CMOS

array. It converts light to an analog signal which is sent to the ADC

Direct detectors use amorphous selenium and they convert the x-ray photons to an

electrical signal directly. In direct capture, amorphous selenium converts the beam to

electrons directly which are then captured by the thin-film transistor array. The digital

elements (del) that are in the TFT are what actually collect the electrons and generate an

electrical charge.
