Punctuation in Letters

Common Core Standard:

CC.1.4.2.R Demonstrate a grade appropriate command of the


conventions of Standard English grammar, usage, capitalization,
punctuation, and spelling.

Objective: Students will be able to identify errors in a letter and the correct
punctuating needed when writing a letter to a person.

Materials:

Sample letters both correctly and incorrectly written


PowerPoint: Letter Writing
Chart Paper
Markers

Motivation:

Show students an image

What is different between these two sentences?


How can using a simple punctuation change the meaning of the
sentence?
Show three balls and juggle them
If I wanted to change this sentence
o Mr. Stives is juggling beanbags.
o Change a period to an exclamation point.
The gist is that we will be focusing on punctuation when writing a letter.
Instruction:

Present a PowerPoint slide on punctuation in a letter.


o Must has a comma after the name of the month
o Must have a comma after the greeting
o Have to have a period at the end of each sentence (7 words in each
sentence).
o Use a comma at the end of your closing.
o Capitalization at the beginning of a sentence and in a title

Guided Practice:

We will look at a letter written and students will need to re-write the
letter using the correct punctuation.
I will perform a think aloud, as I correct the letter, students will re-write
each sentence with me as I think out loud.

Individual Practice:

Students will have the opportunity to draw a name from a hat and they
will need to write a letter to that person about any subject they want, as
long as it appropriate and relates to school.
o Favorite school subject
o Best part of the day
o Favorite sport and why
o Favorite thing learned so far in the school year.

Assessment:

Students will have the chance to share their letter if they choose to. If
not, I will collect them and review them for grammar and punctuation
errors. Students will be assessed on the use of punctuation more
importantly than spelling.
Students will be shown a letter and using the stand-up, sit down
assessment, they will agree or disagree if the letter is written correctly
(Emphasis on punctuation).

Modifications:

One student will be wearing an FM system


I will be wearing a lapel microphone
Repeating directions for student who have troubling processing
information
Chunking tasks into smaller parts.
Check for understanding of directions.

Frequent feedback and praise
Extra time to complete classwork for a few group of students.
