How are New ASTM Standards Developed?

Anyone can submit ideas to ASTM headquarters

ASTM staff research the idea to assess whether:
there is adequate interest in the field
to discover if parallel activities exist in other organizations
to determine if it fits within the ASTM structure
When an ASTM technical committee identifies a need
When interested parties approach a technical
committee
ASTM does not determine which standards to develop

How are ASTM Standards updated?

All standards are reviewed at least every 5 years

Some change more rapidly to reflect industry
needs
Task group members prepare a draft standard
Reviewed by its parent subcommittee
Submitted to the main committee & entire membership
of ASTM
All negative votes are considered & receive a written
explanation
ASTM ensures proper procedures were followed
All tests are done in laboratories to the strictest
standards

How long does it take to
develop an ASTM Standard?
ASTM has a very structured, fast process

There are six different types of ASTM standards:

A = ferrous metals
Test Method
Specification B = nonferrous metals

Practice C = ceramic, concrete, and masonry materials

Guide D = miscellaneous materials

Classification E = miscellaneous subjects

Terminology F = materials for specific applications

G = corrosion, deterioration & degradation of
materials
