Chemical Sciences: Mixing common materials that will dissolve into water Week 7 Term 2

Learning goals: To investigate the solubility of common materials in water.

We will add some materials to water until no more can be added. The water will become
saturated. Water is the solvent and salt and sugar are solutes.
Online investigation - http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/L7569/index.html
Our class science investigation: What happens to the amount of sugar or salt that will dissolve
when we change the temperature of the water?

We will be changing the temperature of the water.

We will keep all of these things the same:
Amount of water half a cup
Type of stirs
Timing of stirs
Container
Can you think of other things we will keep the same?

Add spoons of sugar or salt and stir after each one until it is all dissolved
We will measure and record how many spoons.

Sugar and tap water Salt and tap water

Compare your results and is this change reversible?

Sugar and warm water Salt and warm water

Compare your results and is this change reversible?

Construct a graph that shows the data you have gathered.

Chemical Sciences: Mixing and solutions Week 8 Term 2
Learning goals: Investigating the solvent and solute in solutions and mixing common
materials in water.
Activity 1 Food Dye In Water
Instructions:
1. Pour a small amount of water into the small round container so the water is about 1cm
deep.
2. Wait twenty seconds for the water to settle dont rush.
3. Now carefully add a single drop of food colour to the water in the centre of the
container.
4. Write and draw what you notice on the diagram and the box below.

Activity 2 Smartie in Water

Instructions:
Pour the same amount of water into your container.
This time, place a single coloured Smartie in the centre of the container and watch
carefully. Wait at least 90 seconds before recording your observations.
Write and draw what you notice on the diagram and the box below.

Colour in the four chocolate buttons in the picture. Yellow Blue

Use your observations and knowledge of colours and solutions
to predict what will happen when you place Smarties
in your dish as illustrated. Colour in the dish to Yellow or
demonstrate what you think it will look like. Red green

What did you notice when you placed Smarties in the dish and did your observations match
your predictions? Can you explain what you observed?
