Informative Speech Outline by Alicia Ellenberger

Specific Goal: My audience will learn the benefits that extracurricular activities can provide for
children.

Application: My audience will have a new perspective on extracurricular activities involving


youth.
Ethos: Primary I will describe how participating in sports or other after school activities will help
build a persons character at a young age.
Secondary I will cite 3 scholarly references to back up my argument.
Pathos: During this portion, I will go over my own personal experiences with extracurricular
activities and how they have influenced my life. Specifically, my experience with playing on
soccer team all throughout my youth, and how that helped me out in many ways.
Audience Assessment: I shall be assuming that my audience with be familiar with the topic,
and hopefully receptive to it.
Adaptation to Audience: If my audience is not fond of my topic, I want to make sure that I am
engaging. I will do so by keeping a positive stance while giving my speech, as well as moving
around and remaining animated while talking to the audience.
Pattern of Organization: I chose a cause and effect organizational pattern, it seemed like a
more logical approach to take. Im discussing how something can help others, therefore I want
them to know why.

I. Hook: Hello everyone, my name is Alicia, by raise of hand how many of you
played sports in JR High or High school? So did I and it taught me so many
valuable lessons that I still use today.

II. Thesis: By knowing the benefits that extracurricular activities can provide, you
can make an informed decision for your children.

III. Preview: I will explain the different benefits that children can gain by participating
in after school activities.
A. First, we will look at how it helps children gain confidence in themselves
B. Second, I will explain how children gain good social skills with these activities
C. Third, we will explore a few habits that children can gain during their youth

Transition: Now that we have discussed what we will go over, lets jump right into
learning about the confidence that children will gain by participating in
extracurricular activities.

Body
III. When kids are first learning how to play a sport, they are learning a lot of new
things in a short time. At first they might be a little overwhelmed but as they
practice the new skills and get better they gain confidence in themselves.
a. By trying different activities, it allows children to explore things that they are
good at and what they like. By doing this it helps children to find things that
they enjoy and it helps them to feel good about themselves.
Transition: Lets move onto how children can gain good social skills from after
school programs.

IV. By participating in various activities after school it helps to broaden childrens


social circles and gain new friends.
a. Every time they are in a new situation they learn what is socially acceptable
for that new environment.
b. By trying out different activities children also learn to adapt to new situations
quickly.

Transition: When I played soccer growing up I had to get my homework done


before I could go to practice, if I did not have good grades I couldnt play in the
games. This helped me to build good habits that have transitioned over to my
adult life.

V. Being involved in extracurricular activities teaches children about good time


management by making sure they have enough time after school to complete
their homework before practice.
a. As a parent or a coach, you can encourage children to keep their grades up
so that they can go to practice and play in the games.
b. Participating in extracurricular activities helps children to build good habits of
exercising regularly and staying healthy.
c. By choosing to participate in an activity such as soccer, a child is making a
commitment to the rest of their team saying that they will practice and be
there for the games. This teaches the child the importance of following
through on your commitments.

Transition: Now, lets do a quick review of what we have gone over.

VI. We learned about just a few of the benefits that children gain from participating in
extracurricular activities.
a. We discussed how children will gain confidence in themselves.
b. We learned the importance it can have with their social skills.
c. We talked about a few of the habits that children will gain through after school
activities.

VII. Now that we have learned a few of the benefits, what extracurricular activities will
you help your child explore?
