Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Epics
Vedas- foundation of Hinduism. All Hindus recognize and the legitimacy of Vedas. There
are four primary Vedas: The Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva. Together they comprise over
1,000 hymns of praise to their Gods. As well as praise they instruct on how to sacrifice to
their Gods as well. Each Vedas has four divisions: the first one is Samhita, the second is
Brahmanas, the third on is Aranyakas, and the fourth on is Upanishads.
Upanishads are a list of principals. There are over 100 of them in total. The sage that
wrote them was looking for something more as in ultimate eternal salvation. Upanishad
derives from Sanskrit that means to sit near
Bhagavad Gita is the Song of the Blessed One it is an overview of Vedas. It emphasizes
renunciation of worldly involvement and meditation.
Mediums

Hindus believe that what they put into their body is just as important as their Self.

For the more strict Hindus they do not eat meat including eggs, drink alcohol, tea (obtaining

caffeine), mushrooms, garlic, or onions. Along with being vegetarians they also do not eat spicy

food. The reason that they do not eat food that is grown underground is because they think that it

is unholy and because most of it is grown in dung and they do not think that it is right to eat food

that is grown in such unholy ways.

For those who are less strict they will eat but only specific kinds like fish but do stick to not

eating mushrooms, garlic, or onions.

Foods that are fit for consuming are fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and dairy products. As long

as the animals are not harmed in any way they are able to consume them.

They offer their food to their Gods, such as a sacrifice, it is a very spiritual thing for them. They

even have an altar at home that they will offer up food on for their Gods.

Feasts are also a big part of their religion because they think that everything should be celebrated

so they will eat and offer up their food to their Gods.

They also believe that give up food, fasting, is a way for them to sacrifice and come closer to

perfecting their Self and it also helps with enhancing their concentration during meditation or

worship. On the anniversaries of their parents deaths Hindus will fast as well.
