Lesson Plan: Ordering
Introduction:
Ordering or seriation involves putting more than two objects
or sets with more than two members, into a sequence.
Common ways to order may be by size (small to big), length
(short to long), height (short to tall), or width (thin to thick).
Later, activities involving more complex dimensions such as
colour (light-dark), texture (rough to smooth) or capacity
(less-more) are appropriate.

Why is the concept of ordering so important?

Ordering is a foundation of our number system. Two is
bigger than 1, Three is bigger than 2.

Ordering is important to enhance childrens ability to arrange

the objects in ascending or descending order of size.
Preschool children do not have the ability to seriate if they are
given more sticks. They can seriate 4 to 5 sticks.
Activities of ordering by size help to strengthen concepts of
big, small, long, short. When a child is able to seriate it
shows that the child has understood the concept of
big,medium,small.

Purpose:
Ordering or seriation involves arranging more than two
things in graduation of size, shape, colour or an other
attribute so that there is a sequence fro first to last.
The ability to seriate is an important mathematical
concept to be learnt as it helps the child to learn
relationship between quantities.
e.g. 12 15 18.........
This ability helps in developing the concept of number.
(e.g. Greater,Smaller etc.)

Objective:
1. Children will be able to place the items correctly in order
of size.
2. Children will be able to put additional items into the
series
i.e. From small to big
From big to small
3. Children will be able to correct errors if the seriation or
ordering is incorrect.
4. Children will be aware of the following vocabulary.

Vocabulary:
First next after before
Last small big medium
Size arrange order ordering
Increasing decreasing increase
decrease

Ordering can be done in two ways:

1. Small to big
2. Big to small
Begin by giving children three objects to seriate and then
gradually increase the number.

Note: Seriation more than five objects may be

difficult for preschoolers.

Resource:
Bottles, pencils, blocks, sponge, spoons, dishes, glasses,
paper, lids, trays, leaves, straws, pink tower, pyramids,
knobbed cylinder, knoblers twigs, crayons, chalks, books,
bowls, flowers, buckets, paintbrushes, knobbed cylinders,
brown stairs.

Assessment:
On going assessment i.e. through practicals and worksheets.

Process: Day 1 Story of Goldilocks and three

bears

Vocabulary:
1.Small
2.Medium
3.Big
4.Increasing
5.Order
6.Size
The teacher will Read aloud the story of Goldilocks
and the three bears. While telling the story shell
show them the pictures, Ask children i.e. how many
bears are there? There are three bears i.e. baby
bear, mumma bear, papa bear. Then the teacher will
ask How many bowls? How many spoons?
How many chairs? i.e. 3 bowls, 3 spoons, 3
chairs.
Then the teacher will say that let us draw on the black
boards, baby bear, mumma bear and papa bear. Here the
teacher questions that children can you see any
difference amongst the bears? Children may come
up with the answer that one is small, one is medium and
one is big. Then she can draw 3-beds, 3-spoons, 3-bowls
and question them again after drawing each.
Teacher will tell children when we are arranging from
small to big, the size is increasing. (explain its meaning)
Teacher will then give the word order and its meaning.
Ask children Which are the things do you use for
yourself at home? Towel, spoon, pant, shirt, shoe
etc. Are they of same size? No it is different for all.
Prepare corner with 3 different size bears and ask
children to bring things of different sizes.

Process: Day 2 Ordering from small to big

Recapitulation of 1st days vocabulary small, medium, big,

increasing, order, size.
Vocabulary:
1.Arrange
2.Small
3.Next
4.Medium
5.Big
6.Sequence
7.Ordering
8.Increasing

Teacher will give presentation of ordering using 3-

different size objects.
Children will do ordering from small to big.
Teacher will give a bowl to each child.
Children will keep the bowl filled with the given objects
on their right side and arrange the objects from leftside.

Children will sit separately on the border.

Children will do ordering by themselves.

To check their understanding the teacher asks the

following questions.
1.Show me the small object.
2.Show me the big object.
3.Show me the medium size object.
4.Teacher places her hand on the smaller size
object and asks the child to identify which
object is small from the other two objects,
same way can ask which one is big from the
other two, children will learn to compare.

Process: Day 3 Activity related to Ordering

(drawing and colouring)
Children will draw the objects in order. i.e. small to big on
a paper.
Children will draw 3-objects only. For example 3-circles, 3-
flowers, etc.
Children will colour the objects, then they will cut the
objects and paste the objects in the order on the ream
paper as shown below.

Dat Name
e
Ordering small to
big

Children will paste here

Children will draw, colour and cut.
Note: As children are not able to write the numbers, we can take
the above activity instead of worksheet. And later on teacher can
take worksheet, when the children are able to write number 1 to 4.

This activity will be continued for 2-days.

Process: Day 4
Continuation of day 3s activity.
Cutting and pasting of drawn pictures in order. i.e. small
to big.

Process: Day 5 Ordering from small to big

(4-objects)
Recapitulation of the meaning ordering.
Recapitulation of vocabulary.
Teacher will give presentation on the mat using 4-objects.
Children will sit separately on the border.
Teacher will give a bowl to each child.
Children will do ordering by themselves using 4-objects.
(From small to big)
Note: As children are small, so it is difficult for them to learn
the concept of smallest, biggest, shortest, longest, etc.
So the teacher will just observe childrens activity whether
they are able to arrange in order. i.e. small to big

Teacher will go to each child and check the list.

Children can exchange the material after they finish with
one bowl.
Children will bring the objects next of 4-different size and
let them arrange order by themselves on the bajot.

Process: Day 6 Ordering from big to small(3 objects)

Teacher will explain the meaning of big to small and give

the presentation on the mat.
Teacher will tell to children that we will take the big object
(star)first and start arranging from the leftside.

After placing the first object teacher will ask what will
come next?
Ans: medium size
Then teacher will place the second object.(star)
After placing the second object teacher will ask what will
come next?
Ans: small size star
Teacher will place the third object(star)

Teacher will say that size is decreasing or its becoming

small and define the meaning of decreasing. Children will
do ordering by themselves.

Process: Day 7 Ordering from big to small(4

objects)
Teacher will presentation using 4 objects and children will
do the same.

Process: Day 8 Variation for recapitulation

Give a ream paper for illustrating their understanding of
ordering
i.e. small to big or big to small
Worksheet of ordering will be taken on when children
learn to write the numbers 1 to 4.
