Chapter 3 is an extension of the data presented in the early part of the research. This chapter will give a contribution to the completion of
the study through conducting case studies of reliable cases wherein something is applicable for the success of the research. In that way, the
proponents will have better understanding regarding the problem that they are trying to solve. In this chapter, you will see similar existing cases
that can be additional knowledge and references aside from information from books and the internet.

Similarity to the Project: of the Nurture tropical spa.
Nurture Tropical Spa and cafs similarity to our study is that it involves the environment in its design and in helping the people
to relax their body and mind. It is also much more than a spa, because it will also be a community treatment center with individual residential
units to house each patient. Just like in Nurture, it has this community like accommodation units which they called Valley; its composed of
ifugao units that are built near each other to create that community home-like feeling.
Location: Complex of Subic Bay Hospital, Subic bay Freeport Zone,Olongapo City
Subic Bay medical center is a 5.6 hectare hospital complex located on top of
the hill surrounded by a lush tropical forest. The environment is very ideal for health and
healing. It is only a 2-hr drive from Manila. Subic is also accessible by land, sea and
international flights. The hospital complex was once the US Naval Hospital in Subic Bay.
It is also known before as the Institute of natural healing. Fig. 3.4 The aerial shot of the whole

Subic Bay Medical Center is similar to our study because it is located in a site surrounded by a tropical forest wherein it has a scenic
view that can help relax the mind and body of a depressed patient. Another similarity is that it is also a complex that is composed of different
structures that will help in the healing process of the patient. The services offered in the center are also similar because it offers many therapies
and activities that can help through the healing and relaxation of depressed people. Lastly, the site is just a 2-hr drive from Manila, this means
that there target patients are also the people from Manila.

Psychoneuroimmunology
Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), is a relatively recent branch of science that enforces beliefs that physicians have held for many
centuries, perhaps well before the times of the ancient Greeks. The premise is that a patient's mental state influences diseases and healing.
Specifically, PNI studies the connection between the brain and the immune system. Psychoneuroimmunology provides a scientific framework
for researchers to investigate the aspects of healing that go beyond standard clinical therapy. PNI researchers look for the physical links that
allow the immune system to respond to psychological factors, such as the will to live to a certain date. They look at the ways that mental states,
such as hopelessness, can signal the immune system to lower the body's defenses.
More than a particular therapy, PNI is a field of research. However, PNI has explored the benefits of many nontraditional or holistic
approaches to healing. These include psychotherapy and counseling for people with cancer, and biofeedback and relaxation therapies to reduce
stress. It is possible that PNI studies will lead to the discovery of new ways to enhance the immune system, just as it has already shown new
ways the immune system can be suppressed. PNI gives credibility to many long-held folk beliefs about the effect of the mind on disease and
healing. By demonstrating the physical means by which the mind influences the body, and vice versa, PNI provides a measure of validity to
holistic approaches to healing.
Behavioral Medicine
Behavioural medicine is the interdisciplinary field concerned with the development and integration of behavioural, psychosocial, and
biomedical science knowledge and techniques relevant to the understanding of health and illness, and the application of this knowledge and
these techniques to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Consumers and a wide variety of health professionals are involved in
behavioural medicine research and practice, including cardiologists, counsellors, epidemiologists, exercise physiologists, family physicians,
health educators, internists, nurses, nutritionists, paediatricians, psychiatrists and psychologists. Behavioural medicine takes a lifespan approach
to health and health care, working with children, teens, adults and seniors individually and in groups, and working with racially and ethnically
diverse communities in the United States and abroad.
Areas of behavioural medicine research include adolescent health, aging, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease (heart
disease, hypertension, stroke), children's health, chronic pain, cystic fibrosis, depression, diabetes, disease-related pain, eating disorders,
environmental health, headaches, HIV/AIDS, incontinence, insomnia, low back pain, minority health, myofascial pain, obesity, public health,
pulmonary disease, quality of life, rehabilitation, sexually transmitted diseases, social support, sports medicine, substance abuse (alcohol,
tobacco, and other drugs) and women's health.

Holistic Healing
Holistic healing bypasses the band-aid fix approach of conventional medicine, looks beyond a
persons physical state and sees the holistic view of their state of being or functioning. It acknowledges that the
root cause of a physical illness may in fact be non-physical. Holistic healing works when we approach life from all
aspects of being physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
Therefore, a holistic approach is considered to be more effective because change occurs on all levels and
as a result, positive changes are more likely to last long-term and improve a persons overall quality of life.
When we heal holistically, we address imbalances on all levels, rather than one or two, and so it becomes a life-long process in achieving
overall life balance. The ultimate goal of aligning the body, mind and soul promises a happier, healthier, more balanced state of being.
The healing process is a slow and sacred process. It is a process that cant be done only by medicine and therapies, you need prayer, and
you need God. The similarity of this structure to our study is that it prioritize the patients communication with God through spiritual therapies
and others. It also offers workshops and seminars that can help in the healing process of depressed patients.
Workshops
Behavior Therapy
People most commonly seek behavioral therapy to treat: depression, anxiety, panic disorders and anger issues. Behavior therapy is
focused on helping an individual understand how changing their behavior can lead to changes in how they are feeling. The goal of behavior
therapy is usually focused on increasing the persons engagement in positive or socially reinforcing activities. Behavior therapy is a structured
approach that carefully measures what the person is doing and then seeks to increase chances for positive experience. Common techniques
include:
Self-Monitoring this is the first stage of treatment. The person is asked to keep a detailed log of all of their activities during the day. By
examining the list at the next session, the therapist can see exactly what the person is doing.
Schedule of Weekly Activities this is where the patient and therapist work together to develop new activities that will provide the patient
with chances for positive experience.
Role Playing this is used to help the person develop new skills and anticipate issues that may come up in social interactions.
Behavior Modification in this technique the patient will receive a reward for engaging in positive behavior.
Cognitive-Behavior Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to
problem-solving. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind peoples difficulties, and so change the way they feel. It is
used to help treat a wide range of issues in a persons life, from sleeping difficulties or relationship problems, to drug and alcohol abuse
or anxiety and depression. CBT works by changing peoples attitudes and their behavior by focusing on the thoughts, images, beliefs and
attitudes that are held (a persons cognitive processes) and how these processes relate to the way a person behaves, as a way of dealing with
emotional problems.
Cognitive behavioral therapy can be thought of as a combination of psychotherapy and behavioral therapy. Psychotherapy emphasizes the
importance of the personal meaning we place on things and how thinking patterns begin in childhood. Behavioral therapy pays close attention to
the relationship between our problems, our behavior and our thoughts. Most psychotherapists who practice CBT personalize and customize the
therapy to the specific needs and personality of each patient.
Multi-modal therapy
Multimodal therapy refers to a combination of two or more methods of treatment used for more effective results. The ultimate goal of this
type of therapy is to control the cancer and all of the associated symptoms.
The most common and specialist-recommended modalities used to treat pleural mesothelioma are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. This tri-
modal therapy is highly recommended to early stage patients by many cancer centers, including the NCI National Comprehensive Cancer Center
and Brigham and Womens Hospital in Massachusetts.
In more recent years, the use of experimental therapies, including immunotherapy and photodynamic therapy, in conjunction with more
traditional modalities, have also improved patient survival rate and overall quality of life.
The similarity of the Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital Center to our study is that it offers individualized therapies and workshops for a
specific behavior or problem. It also offers many approaches that can be a great help for the study. Lastly, it is a comprehensive community
resource.

D. SUMMARY
After studying each case study, we have learned and identified some useful elements that can be adapted to our study and could
be a great help for future researchers.
The use of landscape as an environmental element in increasing the energy level and the speed of recovery of a depressed patient
The unique way of accommodating patients/clients by using indigenous dwelling (Ifugao houses) are used in giving a comfortable and
relaxing feeling while inside.
The home-like feeling and comfortability of the place.
The promotion of having a healthy lifestyle
Focuses on the physical beautification and rejuvenation of the clients/patients
The conducting of therapies and workshops for stress and depression related issues is good and can be a great help to the patients and
people who are not aware of this illnesses.
Specialization of programs that promotes healing and recovery from depression related medical problems because there are only few
structures that offers this kind of services especially to depressed people.
E. RECOMMENDATIONS
With the given case studies, the researchers will have to implicate the methods that have potential to be good contributors for the
project. The researchers will carefully analyze what are the possible threats or the possible advantages among the healthcare facilities, so
that it will be taken out as consideration for the project. The case studies that have been conducted brought awareness of what are the
phenomenons that can exist in our country so that it can be taken note of.
