Speech: As the topic of the todays discussion is Talent and Creativity I would like to
start by quoting one of my favorites writers Antoine De Saint Exuperis:If you
want to build a ships, dont drum up people to collect wood, and dont
assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless
immensity of the seaThe subject is quite rich, and a little ambiguous as it can be
difficult to draw a clear/solid distinction between those two notions. We will start by
posing a few capital questions:Are those two innate attributes of us,individuals?
What are the main differences between them? Are they still active, fundamental and
vital factors in a new technological age?How can we make use of them? Are only
the artists and the people who have job in the creative fields the one who can make
use of them or theres a dose/amount of creativity in every career and daily
activity?
Hoping that I ve arose at least a bit your interest upon this matter,we will try to find
an answer for these dilemas.
In order to warm up a little bit I would like to start with an easy, hopefully fun
activity, and namely a Ven n Diagram in order to have a clearer picture of the
differences between what we call talent and creativity.I will ask you to tell me the
first words that cross your mind when you think about these two topics.
-- Dr. E. Paul Torrance described creativity as "a process of becoming
sensitive to problems, deficiencies, gaps in knowledge, missing elements, disharmonies, and so on;
identifying the difficulty; searching for solutions, making guesses, or formulating hypotheses about
the deficiencies: testing and retesting these hypotheses and possibly modifying and retesting them;
and finally communicating the results."

.
Now that we re a little bit more familiar with the topic lets think about a few
questions and discuss them.
Activity 1
1.What do you think is of greater importance in everyday
life- creativity or talent?
2. Why do you think some people are more creative than
the others?What makes a
person a creative one?Are there some factors involved?
3.What do you think about the great artists, for instance
Picasso ,Dali that are
famous for their messy excentric lifestyles?Do you think
that it is possible for an artist
or a person who works in the creative fields to conceive
great creations and also
to have a normal lifestyle?
4.Art is creation or discovery?Creativity or talent?Ancient
philosophers from various cultures lacked any concept of creativity. They thought
that art was just the result of emulating the reality.Do you agree with them?

5.Some psychologists associate some mental disorders such

as bipolarity or unipolarity with creative personalities.Do you think is just a
coincidence or that there is a real connection between these disorders and the great
artistic minds?

6.Do you think that media nowadays has an impact upon

talent and creativity?
7. Do you believe is it important to maintain our childhish
creativity?
Activity 2:You have enlisted below a series of quotes about talent and
creativity. Read and discuss your favourite quote.Which one refers to
talent and which one to creativity? Do you think success is s result of
creativity,talent or simply hard work?

If you can dream it, you can do it. Always remember this whole thing was started by a
mouse.
Walt Disney (December 5, 1901 December 15, 1966), American animator, director and
screenwriter
YOU COULD LOCK the Gasman in a padded cell with some dental floss and a bowl of Jell-
O, and he'd find a way to make something to explode.
James Patterson, Max
Talent is an accident of genes, and a responsibility.
Alan Rickman
Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you re young -Pablo
Picasso

Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something,

they feel a little guilty because they didnt really do it, they just saw something. It seemed

obvious to them after a while Steve Jobs

You see things; and you say, Why? But I dream things that never were; and I say, Why
