EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Love Knows No Bounds (LKNB) is a non-profit organization based in Ithaca, NY. LKNB was
first established in 2006 in response to the disastrous state of New Orleans after Hurricane
Katrina. Here they established a focus which remains important to the organization to this
day: catching the people whom others let fall through the cracks. They focused their work
in the 7th ward and developed loving personal relationships with many of the people and
families they were working with.

In addition to sending volunteers and carpenters down to New Orleans, LKNB also began
working with more local disasters in 2011. Teams of volunteers were sent to Owego, NY in
response to the flood produced by Tropical Storm Lee and to both Brooklyn and Staten
Island after Hurricane Sandy. In 2014, LKNB also began work in Haiti where they are
helping the people who remain displaced following the hurricane in 2010.
Finally, in 2015, LKNB, launched their Neighbor-to-Neighbor program to help ensure that
the residents of Tompkins County who are currently living in property are not neglected of
their basic needs for shelter and living. It is this launch that brought 180 Degrees
Consulting into contact with Mike Ellis and Love Knows No Bounds.

After a meeting between Mike Ellis and our team leads, Charlotte Robertson and Samantha
Ampel, the team got to work analyzing the current status of Love Knows No Bounds, finding
out where the problems are within the organization, determining which of these problems
were the most financially viable and impactful given Love Knows No Bounds budget, and
brainstorming and researching solutions to the problems we chose to focus on.
After a mid-term meeting with Mike Ellis and brief research into our potential areas of
focus, the problems we chose to focus on are:

What is the best way for Love Knows No Bounds to gain volunteers within the
community
How can developing S.M.A.R.T. goals help Love Knows No Bounds to better organize
their company and move forward in their new Neighbor to Neighbor initiative
What grants are currently available that Love Knows No Bounds is eligible for?
How can Love Knows No Bounds most effectively use social media to their advantage

INTRODUCTION

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Overview

Love Knows No Bounds is a non-profit organization located in Ithaca, NY whose new

Neighbor to Neighbor program is being launched this year. Our contact within Love Knows
No Bounds, Michael Ellis, works with a team of seven other unpaid board members to
support LKNB and its programs and to keep it running. They each have full time jobs of
their own and work for Love Knows No Bounds out of their own pure passion for the cause.
Though the premise behind the Neighbor to Neighbor program is strong, LKNB is having a
hard time with its start up, getting the word out, and coordinating all of the aspect
necessary to make this program a success.

4. List of Recommendations

6
Love Knows No Bounds
December 10, 2015

From our logic tree we selected the issues that we believe to be the most financially viable
for Love Knows No Bounds while still making a significant impact. The areas we chose to
focus on are as follows:

1. The second area that we focused on in our research was how LKNB can best gain
volunteers. We believed that having volunteers would not only allow LKNB to begin
their projects and get a start on the Neighbor to Neighbor program but would also
create a word of mouth awareness of LKNB and the work they do within the
volunteer community.
2. Our third initiative for Love Knows No Bounds was developing S.M.A.R.T. goals. We
believed that though this seems a simple task, it would help LKNB better organize
their next move every step of the way in order to ensure that they are always
moving forward and avoid stagnation within the company.
3. Our fourth and final are of focus for our work with Love Knows No Bounds was
finding grants. LKNB was in a bit of a limbo state between local and national grants
given their involvement in various initiatives at once. We believed that aiding LKNB
in finding grants which they are eligible for would not only gain them access to
these grants so as to earn money for their program but would also free up their time
so they could continue to focus on Neighbor to Neighbor and not searching for
grants.
4. The first thing our team agreed to address was Love Knows No Bounds approach to
social media. We saw this as an easy and inexpensive platform for LKNB to spread
their brand and mission into the community.

organization already knows to advocate for the organizations need for
volunteers
Gain student contact information, such as emails, to regularly keep them
informed about volunteer opportunities

8

announcement
50% of these students will contact the organization for volunteer
opportunities
Within the next five years, 40% of LKNBs volunteers will be high school
students
These percentages can be found by keeping a log of all people who contact
and volunteer for the organization

[B] Become involved with Alternative Spring Break programs

Many colleges, such as Ithaca College, participate in Alternative Spring Break
programs that focus on community service activities. Love Knows No Bounds would
benefit from being a part of these programs

Considerations for become involved with Alternative Spring Break programs:

For these programs, LKNB would benefit from reaching out to non-area
colleges as well, because typically Alternative Spring Break allows for college
students to volunteer outside of the local community

Pros for become involved with Alternative Spring Break programs:

LKNB would gain volunteers for certain projects

College students who are involved in these programs are typically
enthusiastic and passionate about community service and would be positive
volunteers
This would increase word of mouth and awareness of the organization

Cons for become involved with Alternative Spring Break programs:

[D] Reaching out to Greek Life at Cornell University

Members of fraternities and sororities at Cornell are dedicated towards fundraising
and volunteering for many local and national non-profit organizations of their
choice.

Considerations for reaching out to Greek Life at Cornell University

Representing projects that LKNB does for the local community will reach out
to the hearts of the leaders of the fraternity/sorority and create missions to
help fundraise/volunteer for the Neighbor to Neighbor project.

Pros for reaching out to Greek Life at Cornell University

Encouraging just one fraternity or sorority to participate in an LKNB project

means involvement from almost every member in it
Greek life creates great fundraisers that they do on campus and could bring
in a lot of money for LKNB
Members who become involved with LKNB projects will likely volunteer
again or promote it to a friend if they have a good experience

Cons for reaching out to Greek Life at Cornell University

Time and effort put towards reaching out to the different fraternities and
sororities

2. Benefits of Using S.M.A.R.T Goals

Currently, Love Knows No Bounds is at a cross roads for how to maintain their non-profit
organization as well as how to get volunteers and donations. They want to shift their focus
to new goals such as the Neighbor to Neighbor project while maintaining their current
image. By wanting to accomplish all of these things, Love Knows No Bounds should
prioritize their to-do list and zoom in on key issues.

[A] Creating Specific Goals

When looking at specific goals, you often think about what those goals are trying to
accomplish. To make this goal happen, Love Knows No Bounds needs to think of a
specific goal rather than making vague goals. To set a specific goal, it needs to
answer the six Ws: who, what, where, when, which, and why. By answering all of
these questions, it allows Love Knows No Bounds to know exactly what to do to fix
the problem rather then just saying they need volunteers for instance.

Considerations for creating specific goals

Looking at where to begin can be a challenge

Planning can take longer than expected
Make sure these goals are specific and can answer all questions before
working on the goal itself
Resources such as time, money, volunteers, etc.

Pros for specific goals

Allows you to know exactly what to do to fix the problem

Answers all six Ws: who, what, where, when, which, and why.
(Donohue,2015).

12
Love Knows No Bounds
December 10, 2015

Tune in on exactly where to begin instead of going back and forth on what to
look at
Vague goals are ignored goals. Specific goals are monitored goals. (Walter,
2012)

Cons for specific goals

It can take longer to plan

Doesnt always lead you to success because of getting bogged down with
trying to answer all Ws (HR, 2001)
Can become overwhelming when planning out every detail

Implementation of creating specific goals

Address all aspects of Love Knows No Bounds and think about everything
that needs improvement or anything that should be included
Rank them on how important they are
Choose the most important problem/issue
Begin to answer the Ws
With planning, keep in mind how much time it will take to accomplish these
goals

Suggested Success Criteria for creating specific goals

Plan out exactly what to accomplish first as well as how to accomplish each
goal
Create a weekly schedule to monitor the success towards a goal

[B] Creating Measurable Goals

For a goal to be measurable, it needs to be able to be tracked along the way. As you
work on your specific goal, you should be able to tune in on exactly what to work on
each week to accomplish that goal.

Considerations for creating measurable goals

Accurately depicting how much, how long, etc. can be hard to see
Whether Love Knows No Bounds should start now or later when looking at a
specific goal to accomplish
Resources such as time, money, volunteers, etc.

13
Love Knows No Bounds
December 10, 2015

Pros for measurable goals

Allows you to know exactly what to do to fix the problem

Focuses on answering questions such as how much? How many? How will I
know when it is accomplished? (Donohue, 2015)
Love Knows No Bounds will be able monitor how the organization is doing
week by week and tune in on what to accomplish each week
Goals should be measurable so that you have tangible evidence that you
have accomplished the goal. (Walter, 2012).

Cons for measurable goals

It can take longer to plan

Doesnt always lead you to success because of getting bogged down with
trying to answer all questions (HR, 2001)
Can become overwhelming when planning out every detail
Doesnt take into consideration any back plans if anything unexpected occurs

Implementation of creating measurable goals

Address all aspects of Love Knows No Bounds and think about everything
that needs improvement or anything that should be included
Rank them on how important they are
Choose the most important problem/issue
Begin to answer the questions such how much? how much time? etc.
Develop things to do for each week to allow for measuring the success of
Love Knows No Bounds

Suggested Success Criteria for creating measurable goals

Plan out exactly what to accomplish first as well as how to accomplish each
goal
Create a weekly schedule to monitor the success towards a goal

[C] Creating Attainable Goals

Attainable goals are one of the most important parts of planning S.M.A.R.T. goals
because it allows the organization to tune on what they can accomplish. By make
attainable goals, you are able to be realistic and think about how much it will cost,
what can each member bring to the table, and what is a more realistic goal to
accomplish in the time frame.
14
Love Knows No Bounds
December 10, 2015

Considerations for creating attainable goals

Defining what exactly is attainable to the organization

What each board member can bring to the table
What things Love Knows No Bounds would like to accomplish
Resources such as time, money, volunteers, etc.

Pros for attainable goals

Small, intermediate goals are easier to see and achieve, and as more
intermediate goals are accomplished, the smaller the distance to the final
goal remains to navigate. (Walter, 2012).
Find the easiest ways to accomplish a goal
Allows for realistic goals
Goals should be achievable; they should stretch you slightly so you feel
challenged, but defined well enough so that you can achieve them.
(UVA,2010)

Cons for attainable goals

Looking for the easiest way to accomplish a goal may make it harder down
the line due to restrictions on things such as time and money
Planning can be longer

Implementation of creating attainable goals

Address all aspects of Love Knows No Bounds and think about everything
that needs improvement or anything that should be included
Rank them on how important they are
Choose the most important problem/issue
Begin to look resources and think about realistic steps to achieve the goal

Suggested Success Criteria for creating attainable goals

Plan out exactly what to accomplish first as well as how to accomplish each
goal
Create a weekly schedule to monitor the success towards a goal

[D] Creating Realistic Goals

When thinking about how to make a goal realistic, you have to think about how you
15
Love Knows No Bounds
December 10, 2015

can accomplish that goal and whether you are willing to work on it.

Considerations for creating realistic goals

Defining what exactly is realistic to the organization

What each board member can bring to the table
What things Love Knows No Bounds would like to accomplish
Resources such as time, money, volunteers, etc.

Pros for realistic goals

Allows Love Knows No Bounds to focus on one part of a goal because they
put all of their energy in something they are willing to work on rather than
focusing on ten things at once

Cons for realistic goals

May not be the fastest or easiest way to accomplish something

Planning can take longer than usual

Implementation of creating realistic goals

Address all aspects of Love Knows No Bounds and think about everything
that needs improvement or anything that should be included
Rank them on how important they are
Choose the most important problem/issue
Look at resources and decide how to realistically accomplish the goal at hand
Develop things to do for each week to allow for measuring the success of
Love Knows No Bounds

Suggested Success Criteria for creating realistic goals

Plan out exactly what to accomplish first as well as how to accomplish each
goal
Create a weekly schedule to monitor the success towards a goal

[E] Creating Timely Objectives

Without a timeline, you could be working on one task for a very long time rather
than give yourself a target timeframe to finish that goal. By focusing in a certain,
specific goal, this organization will be able to accomplish what they want and get it
16
Love Knows No Bounds
December 10, 2015

done in a timely matter.

Considerations for creating timely objectives

Defining what exactly is needs to be done and how much time you have/want
to put into the goal

Resources such as time, money, volunteers, etc.

Pros for creating timely objectives

With so many things to accomplish, creating a timeline can allow Love Knows
No Bounds to become organized and prioritize their time
Can accomplish what they want in a timely manner

Cons for creating timely objectives

Can become unrealistic due to outside issues and events

May not be the most feasible way

Implementation of Creating Timely Objectives

that needs improvement or anything that should be included
Rank them on how important they are
Choose the most important problem/issue
Look at resources and decide how to realistically accomplish the goal at hand
in a timely manner

Love Knows No Bound

Suggested Success Criteria for Creating Timely Objectives

Plan out exactly what to accomplish first as well as how to accomplish each
goal
Create a weekly schedule to monitor the success towards a goal

Introduces the potential of working with and establishing relationships with new
groups within the community

Cons for social media interaction

19
Love Knows No Bounds

CONCLUSION

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Working with Love Knows No Bounds over the course of this past semester has been an
honor and a privilege, to work with such a passionate group is truly inspiring. Over the
course of these short four months that we have been working together, we have already
seen LKNB grow as an organization and we look forward to seeing its continued growth for
years to come. We hope that our analysis and recommendations will aid in this growth and
allow Love Knows No Bounds to continue to move forward to reach its full potential.

We believe that the work we have done throughout the semester has allowed us to develop
suggestions for Love Knows No Bounds that are both reasonable and beneficial. We hope
that LKNB will allow these suggestions to help them better organize and establish
themselves as an organization as well as help them to develop a name within the
community. We hope that the integration of these suggestions combined with the launch of
LKNBs new Neighbor to Neighbor program will allow this program to truly take off within
Tompkins County.
