How can I fulfill my kuleana as kuaana of Ka Waihona and inspire the keiki to practice na mea waiwai in

their daily lives?

How can I use storytelling to deepen my understanding of na mea waiwai?

Who is my audience?
What are they interested in? How can I use those interests to hold their attention?
What are the na mea waiwai? Why are they important?
What are the elements of storytelling?
How can I use storytelling to teach the keiki?

This project is about exploring ways in which storytelling can be used to teach keiki about our na mea
waiwai, our Hawaiian values. This project will test your knowledge of the elements of a short story and
your ability to create a unique story that captivates the minds of the keiki and spark a flame within them that
inspires them to model na mea waiwai in their everyday lives.

Through this project, you will be asked to apply your understanding and skills relating to:

analyzing & evaluating information/text/data

synthesizing information
express your ideas powerfully

Problem solving and critical thinking - use multiple resources to plan, design, develop and answer
open-ended questions using higher order thinking skills.
Communicate and collaboration/Creativity and innovation - apply critical thinking, research methods,
and communication tools to create original work. Collaborate effectively with an audience beyond the
classroom to create original work.
You will be assessed on your mastery of the elements of a short story and how you are able to create a brand
new and unique moolelo where your protagonist exemplifies our na mea waiwai. You will also be assessed on
your ability to share your graphic novel with the keiki of Ka Waihona and teach them about na mea waiwai.
After your exhibition, you will reflect and assess yourself on how well you critically analyzed information, and
synthesized that information to help you create your unique graphic novel.
