Objectives: by the end of the lesson, students will be able to :


Recall the first Problem Solving Step
State a problem without blaming anyone

Standards
MACF 5.1 Identify the various feelings that most people experience and describe the
physical and emotional reactions of the body to intense positive and negative feelings
MACF 5.2 Apply methods to accommodate a variety of feelings in a constructive
manner in order to promote well being
MACF 5.3 Define character traits such as honesty, trustworthiness, self-discipline,
respectfulness, and kindness and describe their contribution to identity, self-concept,
decision-making, and interpersonal relationships

Introduction: Students sit down at their seats in the classroom


Teacher should review:
Previous objectives: How eating can affect our moods and behaviors
ROAR behaviors and how to treat peers
Problem solving situations, age appropriate
The Calm Down poster

Activator: Left Out

All partners will be chosen by stickers distributed


Activity 1: Warm-up
Display the first screen.
Have students think of typical problems a fifth grader might have with another person at
school.Give students think time.

Activity 2: Think, Turn, Tell


Students will sit their their partners, chosen by the teacher.
Turn and Tell your partner your ideas
Write ideas on the board
Ask the students: Why would you want to solve these kinds of problems before they get
worse?

Activity 3 Step Up Music Video


Watch the music video with students.
Ask students what do you notice about the first letter of each step?
Remembering the word Step will help you remember each problem solving step practice
saying the problem without blame. Practice directly saying the problem without blaming
anyone.

Activity 4 Story and Discussion


Show the photo. Here is James and Sierra. Read card description.
1. Think about how you might state their problem without blaming anyone
2. Play the video
3. Sierra and James and their friends have a problem they aren't able to
solve on their own. Its becoming a bigger problem
4. They are both clearly upset. What do they need to do before they can
even start to solve their problem? (calm down)
5. After theyve calmed down, they can use the problem solving steps
6. With their partners, students will help Sierra and James solve their
problem.

Activity 4: Skill Practice/ Role Play


One partner will be Sierra and the other will be James. Students will decide who is who.
Teacher will direct the role play step by step
When you problem solve, begin with the STEP S: Say the Problem without blaming
anyone. What does it mean to blame someone? (Say its their fault, dont take
responsibility for your part in the problem).
Use I statements, rather than you statements
Have students brainstorm more words to avoid. Write the words to avoid on the board.
Ask students to give an example from the story where Sierre or James blames the other
person. Direct students to role play their characters feelings.

Activity 5: Handout
The students will work in partners to come up with one statement that describes a
problem without blaming either person.
Distribute handout
Read the directions out loud
Ask students for examples to speak out loud

Activity 5: Wrap-up
Reference the Problem-Solving Steps poster. Repeat all four steps.
Why is it important to state problems with other people in a way that doesn't blame
them?
Think about one typical problem here at school where it is important to say the problem
without blaming anyone. Turn and tell your partner.
Next week well continue helping Sierra and James solve their problem, using the next
two problem solving steps: T Think of solutions and E Explore consequences
