The Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, which is a premier scientific

journal focusing on data mining and relevant knowledge discovery, was established

by Usama Fayyad as founding Editor-in-Chief in 1997 (Data Mining and Knowledge

Discovery, 2017). The original publisher was Kluwer Academic and became Springer

Science Business Media later (Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, 2017). This

journal completely matches my discipline that is data analysis covering data mining,

database, data analysis, predict analysis, and relevantly foundational knowledge.

Some basic information about the journal is shown in the following table.

Table 1. The basic information of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery

As the table shows, this journal has published 20 years since the big data

period was initial shaping. Its impact factor is 2.714 (Data Mining and Knowledge

Discovery, 2017). The number of articles per issue increased from 4 articles to 9

articles and the number of issues per year increased dramatically from 4 issues to 6

issues per year in only a few years after the journal was published (Data Mining and

Knowledge Discovery, 2017). These details show us that it is a significant journal in

data science field and will consistently witness the development of data science.

The scope of the journal covers five crucial areas including theory and
foundational issues, data mining methods, algorithms, knowledge discovery process,

and application issues (Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, 2017). Since the data

gathering, storage, and distribution have been developed rapidly, a need for advanced

computational tools and new techniques to aid in data analysis was in high demand.

The Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery aims to provide a collected resource

relevant to common methods and techniques in data mining and data analysis (Data

Mining and Knowledge Discovery, 2017). Furthermore, it creates a forum for

communicating between experts and scholars in this field and unifying the diverse

research communities (Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, 2017). As the big data

are widely used, it benefits various research areas such as data mining, machine

learning, information fusion, computational intelligence, and social networks.

The most articles published in the journal are original technical papers written

by experts or scholars in both the research and practice of data mining and relevant

knowledge discovery (Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, 2017). It shows the

data mining is a new and developing field, which needs plenty of innovation on

methods, models, and algorithms. Numerous authors are working at Apple, Samsung

Research America, and Facebook, Amazon, and so on, which are the top level

companies in computer and internet industry (Data Mining and Knowledge

Discovery, 2017). They are experts and pioneers in the data mining field, and their

research solve existing data mining issues with advanced technologies and practical

experiences. These articles, standing for the most advanced methods in data mining

field, apply me who is an entry level student a broader horizon in my field and more

effective research methods when I engage a data analysis project. The structure of the

most articles published in this journal consists of abstract, introduction, materials and

methods, results, analysis or discussion, conclusion, acknowledgments, copyright

information (Open access) and references (Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery,

2017). It follows the logical way about how to design a new model or an appropriate

algorithm for an existing issue. As it is a new and high-speed developing research

field, it emphasizes the copyright compared to other social science fields.

The journal publishes 6 issues per year, and one of the issues is a special issue

focusing on a specific and significant area relevant to data mining and knowledge

discovery (Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, 2017). The fifth issue in 2016, the

European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of

Knowledge Discovery (ECML PKDD) 2016 Journal Track Special Issue, is a special

issue including 16 papers focusing on Machine Learning (Data Mining and

Knowledge Discovery, 2017). These articles were selected by ECML PKDD after

they had been running the journal track for four years.

There are other notable features of this journal. First, it has two ISSNs which

are for the print version and electronic version respectively, showing the timeliness is

crucial for data mining field, which is in a high-speed development period (Data

Mining and Knowledge Discovery, 2017). Second, as an international journal, the

publisher applies many digital applications for authors to publish an article, the whole

publishing process is very convenient to submit the paper, communicate with editors,

and revise the paper, especially for the authors coming from other countries (Data

Mining and Knowledge Discovery, 2017). Following the hyperlink Submit online

on the website can upload all the manuscript files easily. Moreover, it has an

application show the author clearly all the steps during the publishing and which step

you are in.

In the meantime, all the requirements and features give me clear guidelines
about how to prepare to write an article published in Data Mining and Knowledge

Discovery, which is a premier journal in data science field. First, the research must be

in the range of the journals scope, which should be relevant to the theory and

foundational issues, data mining methods, algorithms, knowledge discovery process,

and application issues in big data field (Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery,

2017). Second, the article should be innovative and original work with high quality;

the basic requirement is the manuscript must be grammar checked. Third, as they do

not require an IEEE format for each paper, the article must meet their format

requirements, such as the requirement of title paper, text, citation, references, and

table. Last, for getting the copyright, all the material including data, text, theories,

graphs and tables by others are cited in the article should be approved by the authors

(Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, 2017). Following these steps can make the

article full prepared and meets the journals requirements.
