1. Gabor's definition of civic literacy was defined as the ability to use written language as a
power in public, political, and community-based situations. My take from this definition is that
to be literate in this sense means to be able to understand how to communicate ideas by the
means of writing. By being literate in the writing sense, we are then able to communicate ideas
in any context instead of using a medium that would be understood in only one situation. An
about this project, I can then convey the ideas and actions behind this project to others in a
different community even if they weren't directly affected by my actions in the project.
2. Political writing can have a huge effect on the ideas formulated by the general population. The
effect of the writing is directly correlated to the amount of influence this person possesses in
individuals. For this reason writing can be extremely beneficial when written by an individual
who has a direct effect on the issues at hand. It doesn't even matter if the person is a politician by
career choice or an athlete who has a great influence, if they are pertinent to the issue at hand
they can use their voice in writing to convey ideas to shape the ideas that stem off of the original
base. For this reason, it can be very powerful tool in spreading ideas throughout a community. A
huge factor in the effectiveness of a written message is the author of that message; therefore for a
factor at play is the readiness of the information being publicly discussed. An example of this
would be the public disclosures published in local newspaper for the local community. These
articles tend to be published in a very difficult to read manner, making the reader disengage from
the article and become disinterested in the topic at hand. Personally I believe have the power to
participate in student debates located at our university. These debates seem the most readily
available and directed towards the student body. I'm sure I could participate in debates around the
4. In this context, a stakeholder would be any individual relevant to the issue at hand. If the issue
were in regards to the well being of a community, the stakeholders would be every member that
communities ranging from the overall student population of UNC Charlotte to the very specific
communities of first generation Hispanic students. Even though these two communities vary
greatly in demographics when compared to one another, I am relevant to the issues faced by
both. I stay relevant in the issues faced by these communities because I continue to actively
communities, I as a stakeholder will ensure I can obtain the optimum outcome in all of my
endeavors.
5. A news article I found to be interesting is that of protests taking place to stop the advancement
of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Within this article, the idea of famous celebrities using their
influence to influence others to engage the issue at hand is discussed. Paris Jackson is used as the
example of a celebrity using their influence to spread ideas to the general population to continue
the protest of the pipeline. This article connects to Gabor's ideas by conveying the ideals behind
civic literacy. The purpose of this entire article is to present the influential power this site has in
written form in order to engage in a public and political discussion. By definition, this is what
Gabor meant whenever she defined civic literacy. The link to this article is:
