FADE IN:

SUPERIMPOSE: "BELFAST 1973"

EXT. BACK ALLEY - DUSK

FLYNN and CAROLINE both 15, kiss passionately as Flynn


pushes her against the wall. Their hands explore each
other.

SINEAD
(shouts)
Flynn.

Caroline moves away from Flynn. She quickly adjusts her


multicoloured dress and buttons up her blue waist coat.

Flynn pulls the zip up on his trousers.

Running towards them is SINEAD 23, a fit looking COLLEEN.

SINEAD
Mum needs you.

Caroline watches Flynn and Sinead run from her.

The aggressive BEAT of the LAMBEG DRUM starts.

EXT. STREET OF RED BRICK TERRACE HOUSES - DUSK

The sound of RUNNING FOOTSTEPS and ANGRY VOICES mix with


the sounds of BROKEN GLASS grows louder and louder.

Suddenly, a a brute of a man appears at the bottom of the


street. SEAMUS 43 wears the REGIMENTAL MUFTI of the IRISH
GUARDS. He drags his younger wife behind him.

He stops and looks to his rear as PROTESTANT RIOTERS


chase them.

A petrol bomb lands and bursts into flames near them.

Seamus shoves his wife into a doorway and simultaneously


draws a 9MM BROWNING PISTOL from under his blazer.

CRACK, CRACK. Two bullets hit the leading rioter. His


head explodes. The rioters stop.

WOMEN appear from their homes in the street carrying


dustbin lids. They start banging them on the ground.

Men pour out of the houses and run to Seamus.

There is a stand-off as they shout insults at each other.

EXT. PHONE BOX - TOP OF THE STREET

Flynn runs pass the phone box towards Seamus.

Flynn's eyes lock on two petrol bombs, thrown from the


rear of the protestant rioters, sailing through the air.

EXT. DOORWAY

The petrol bombs hits Seamus wife. She screams. Flynn


throws his coat over her to douse the flames.

Seamus checks his wife's neck for a pulse.

Howling, Seamus charges the rioters firing his pistol.

They flee, leaving four dead.

Seamus stops. His pistol clicks empty.

EXT. SEAMUS - POSITION

Flynn hurls a dustbin lid at the Protestant rioters.


Seamus looks at Flynn.

SEAMUS
Get home.

Flynn hesitates.

SEAMUS
Now.

Flynn turns and runs back up the street.

INT. PHONE BOX - TOP OF THE STREET - SAME TIME

Sinead is talking on the phone.

SINEAD
We need an ambulance and the army
now.

The door flies open. Flynn cuts Sinead off.

FLYNN
Don't bloody talk to them.

SINEAD
Without law and order - -

FLYNN
- - there is none for us.

Sinead looks at Flynn.

SINEAD
Mum's dying.

Flynn leaves, stops and looks back at Sinead dialing.

INT. FLYNN'S MUM'S BEDROOM - DUSK

The curtains are drawn. A small bedside light is on,


showing the dark brown heavy furniture.

Flynn sits on the bed holding his sleeping mother's hand.


He watches the shallow rise and fall of her thin chest.

She stirs and opens her eyes.

MOTHER
Open the curtains son.

Flynn opens the curtains to a full moon. He returns to


holding his mother's hands.

MOTHER
I am so proud, son.

FLYNN
I know mum.

MOTHER
Your suitcase is packed

Flynn nods and smiles as he gently squeeze her hand.

MOTHER
My son's a Priest.

She pulls Flynn into her and kisses his forehead.

MOTHER
Fetch your Dad and Father John.

FLYNN
Mum.

MOTHER
Now son. Its time.

Flynn goes to the door. He looks back at his mum and


leaves the room.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. BELFAST - ST PETER'S CATHEDRAL - DAY

SUPERIMPOSE: "7 years later".

In the well lit cathedral the sounds from the CHOIR


SINGING softly echo around the pillars.

The WORSHIPPERS sit quietly talking amongst themselves.

More FAMILIES and COUPLES enter and dip their fingers


into the font, make the Sign of the Cross, before they
sit down.

INT. FRONT ROW

MICHAEL 51, tall wiry build in a dark suit, sits alone,


head bowed.

MARCHING FOOT STEPS cause Michael and the congregation to


turn towards the sound. They all stop talking.

INT. AISLE

SEAMUS, now 50, wears a pinstripe suit and black shiny


brogues. He marches chest out with his head back.

He passes the font without stopping and keeps walking


towards Michael then sits next to him.

Michael looks at him.

MICHAEL
What are you doing here?

Seamus whispers.

SEAMUS
I couldn't miss it.

He adjusts his Irish Guards Tie.

MICHAEL
Why do you wear it?

Seamus smiles.

MICHAEL
You hate the Brits!

Seamus shakes his head.

SEAMUS
Some of my best days were in the
British Army.

MICHAEL
Youre fighting them?

SEAMUS
You sat back when the Prods burnt
our home.

Michael turns away and looks to his front.

Seamus smiles as FLYNN, now a priest age 22.

He looks more like Seamus than his father Michael.

Flynn walks towards the pulpit.

An unhappy Michael looks at Flynn, then Seamus.

The congregation stand.

INT. PULPIT

Flynn opens the BIBLE on the lectern. He looks up at the


congregation. They silently look back. Flynn holds their
gaze.

FLYNN
Let us pray - -

The congregation kneels.

FLYNN
- - that Mary, the mother of the
Lord, will help us by prayers.

Flynn looks at Michael, then Seamus.

FLYNN
- God our Father, may we always
profit by the prayers of -

Flynn looks up.

FLYNN
- - The Virgin Mother MARY for you
bring us life and salvation -

EXT. HOLYWOOD BARRACKS ENTRANCE - SAME TIME - DAY

In the darken sky angry clouds are forming as the BRITISH


UNION JACK flaps in the strong wind.

A BRITISH ARMY SOLDIER raises the barrier.

A DIRTY DARK BLUE CAR followed by a MEDIUM SIZE SCRUFFY


RED VAN exits the barracks.

They join the traffic on the Holywood bypass heading


towards Belfast

INT. BLUE CAR - MOMENTS LATER

The driver RALPH 30, bearded, small and compact wears an


old green parka and jeans.

His right hand pushes his long hair back and he takes out
a SMALL SKIN COLOURED HEARING AID from his right ear.

Ralph glances at SCOTT, 32, six foot, broad shoulders,


with a slightly bent nose

Scott wears an old beat up black leather jacket and jeans


is reading the IRISH NEWS.

Across his lap is his BLACK HECKLER KOCH MP5K machine


pistol.

Scott looks at Ralph as he puts the newspaper down


covering his weapon.

SCOTT
(English accent)
I think I'll grow a beard.

Ralph laughs.

RALPH
(English accent)
That's the news the world has been
waiting for.

Scott smiles.

SCOTT
Let's do a radio check.

Ralph pushes the hearing aid back into his ear and looks
out through the windscreen at the heavy goods lorry in
front of him.

RALPH
Hello Zero this is Charlie One
radio check over.

ZERO (O.S.)
Zero OK, roger out.

Scott resumes reading his newspaper.

INT. ST PETER'S CATHEDRAL ENTRANCE - DAY

Michael, carrying a SMALL BLACK MISSAL, talks to FATHER


JOHN, 57, tall well built.

Michael watches Flynn, wearing a clerical collar and


dressed in his black working suit, walk towards him.

MICHAEL
Great sermon son, you enjoyed it?

Flynn smiles.

FATHER JOHN
(Southern Irish
accent)
I remember my first, in those days
no microphones. Just your voice,
like great actors we were.

Flynn laughs.

FLYNN
You told me.

Father John pulls himself up to his full height.

FATHER JOHN
Did I now?

FLYNN
(Mimic Father John)
Once, twice, (beat) to be sure it
could have been more or more.

Father John walks away grinning. Flynn glances around.

FLYNN
Where's uncle Seamus?

MICHAEL
He left early.

Flynn grabs an umbrella from the stand in the entrance.

They leave through the large stone entrance after making


the sign of the cross

EXT. BLACK MOUNTAIN - SAME TIME

The mountain dominates the skyline to the west of


Belfast.

The blue car, followed by the red van, stops next to a


clump of bushes on the slope over-looking the city.

EXT. BUSHES - SECONDS LATER

FOUR SOLDIERS, with blackened faces, dressed in


camouflage clothes, carrying rifles and backpacks, emerge
from the bushes.

EXT. MOUNTAIN TOP - SIMULTANEOUSLY

THE BIKER 40, small and stocky, looking through


binoculars, watches the soldiers run and climb into the
back of the van.

RALPH(O.S.)
Hello Zero; spot three cleared,
over.

ZERO (O.S.)
Zero roger out.

The Biker crawls backwards onto the rear slope. He runs


to his motorbike. Binoculars bounce off his chest.

He glides the bike down the track then starts the engine.
He races away.

EXT. PARK - SAME TIME - DAY

A GROUP OF GRUBBY 14 YEAR OLDS are playing football. The


ball flies towards Michael.

He traps it and expertly flicks it to Flynn, who passes


it back.

His father juggles the ball. Then kicks to Flynn who


copies his father and juggles the ball.

BOY ONE is fed up. He wants his ball.

BOY ONE
Father.

Flynn kicks the ball into a high arc to the kids.

Flynn and Michael brush the dirt off their clothes,


before glancing at each other. They smile.

A dark shadow passes over them as the rain returns with a


vengeance.

Flynn, using his umbrella, shields his father as they


walk out of the park.

EXT. BELFAST - FALLS ROAD - MOMENTS LATER

The blue car and the red van are stuck in slow moving
traffic as they approach the junction of the Falls Road
and Albert Street.

INT. BLUE CAR

The windscreen wipers shovel the rain water to the sides.

Ralph cleans the mist off the windscreen.

Scott sits holding his Machine Pistol ready for action.

The Biker overtakes. Scott watches him. The Biker nods to


a TEENAGER standing on the junction Falls Road/Albert
Street.

Scott flicks the safety catch off on his Machine Pistol.

INT. DARK ROOM - SAME TIME

The outline of a man can just be seen. A hand comes into


view. It reaches forward and removes two bricks from the
wall.

A small amount of light invades the room. The hand


reaches back and slowly manoeuvres a rifle forward.

His large broken index finger is ridged along the trigger


guard.

He looks through the telescopic sights.

THROUGH THE SIGHTS.

Shows the T junction at the end of Albert Street.

Zeroing in on a TEENAGER, collar up, stands on the corner


out of the rain.

Suddenly, the teenager walks across the junction.

The Biker comes into view.

The blue car comes into view. It stops

INT. DARK ROOM - SECONDS LATER

The index finger takes up the first pressure on the


trigger.
10.

EXT. ALBERT STREET - SIMULTANEOUSLY

Walking fast Flynn shields his father from the rain with
his umbrella.

Flynn can see the blue car stationary at the junction.

A single CRACK of a HIGH VELOCITY ROUND.

Flynn watches as the blue car's side window splinters


inwards.

He sees Scott and Ralph dive from the car as more bullets
strike the car.

Scott behind the engine block points his machine pistol


points at Flynn and his father.

Flynn grabs his father's hand. They turn and run back
away from Scott.

Crack, crack, Scott fires short sharp bursts down Albert


Street over Flynn's head.

The CRACK and THUMP of GUN FIRE. Bullets fly in all


directions.

Flynn and his father run through deep puddles splashing


water before them.

The umbrella is cast aside. Their hair, matted wet, sits


flat on their heads.

EXT. JUNCTION ALBERT STREET/FALLS ROAD - SECOND LATER

Scott fires short sharp bursts and charges down Albert


Street.

EXT. RED VAN - SECONDS LATER

The four blackened faced soldiers explode from the van.


They follow Scott, charging down Albert Road, firing
their weapons.

EXT. ALBERT STREET - MIDDLE- SECOND LATER

Running through the rain soaked street Flynn anxiously


looks back. His father gasping for breath hangs on tight
to Flynn's hand.

Flynn, seeing the firing soldiers charging towards him


drags his father into a doorway.

INT. DARK ROOM - SAME TIME

THROUGH THE SIGHTS.

Scott's face is tracked.

Suddenly Michael's head fills the sight.

Michael's face explodes.

EXT. ALBERT STREET - MIDDLE- SIMULTANEOUSLY

Flynn is dragged down into the gutter by the weight of


his dead father.

He tries to wipe the blood off his father face with a


hankie. He can't.

Flynn gently closes his father's eyes and then places his
crucifix against his father's forehead.

He kneels in the rain soaked street cradling his father.

The crack, whack of rounds ricochetted off the road.


Flynn ducks and then looks up.

Scott charges past him firing his weapon. Their eyes


clash. His troops follow, firing at a target to Flynn's
rear.

RALPH (O.S.)
Hello Zero; this is Charlie One
contact Albert Street. One
civilian down, need urgent medical
assistance.

ZERO (O.S.)
Zero roger; we'll take care; out.

The firing stops. Silence hovers.

Flynn cradling his father turns and looks for Scott.

The red van drives along Albert Street passing Flynn.

The soldiers dive into the back of the van.

Scott climbs in to the front passenger seat. He winds the


window down and with his left hand adjusts the wing
mirror.

WING MIRROR

Scott sees the desolate figure of Flynn watching him.

The sound of SIRENS grows louder and louder.

SCOTT
Wait.

Scot jumps out of the van and starts running towards


Flynn.

EXT. ALBERT STREET

Scott stops as he sees the DULL GREEN ARMOURED AMBULANCE


with its BLUE LIGHTS FLASHING and RED CROSSES turn into
Albert Street.

Scott jumps back into the red van.

Flynn holding his father close to his chest stares at the


red van as it disappears.

INT. FRONT PEW - ST PETER'S CATHEDRAL - NIGHT

Flynn siting rubs the rosary beads. The candle flickers


as Flynn stares at the large cross above the altar.

Flynn's right fist crashes into the wooden pew. Darkness


takes over.

INT. ROCKY'S CELLAR - SAME TIME

The cellar is lit by a weak bulb hanging from the


ceiling. The floor is covered with rubbish and a stained
mattress.

ROCKY, 30, with a dirty ruddy faced, watches Seamus.

On the mattress there is a 303 RIFLE with a telescopic


sight and two 9mm Browning Pistols

ROCKY
I was just -

Seamus looks at him.

He opens the brass plate in the butt and takes out a pull-
through and cleans the rifle.

With the rifle reassembled Seamus looks through the


telescopic sight at Rocky who moves back and looks down.

SEAMUS
Feeling comfortable?

Seamus laughs.
13.

He carefully removes part of the wallpaper behind the


mattress.

Seamus places the rifle and one of the pistols into the
hide. The other pistol is placed into his waist band.

INT. FORD GRANADA - GREAT VICTORIA STREET - DAY

Scott watches Rocky come into view. He jumps into the


car, pulls down the car's sunshade on the passenger's
side.

He turns to Scott and smiles.

ROCKY
They're using the hide.

Scott he hands Rocky some chewing gum.

SCOTT
Who?

ROCKY
Seamus, he threatened me.

Rocky laughs.

ROCKY
If he knew.

SCOTT
Seamus Murphy?

Rocky nods.

Scott takes a photo book out of the glove compartment and


hands to Rocky.

ROCKY

It's this one with the brass plate


on the bottom.

He shows the photo to Scott.

SCOTT
Did he say anything?

ROCKY
No. Just his happy self.

SCOTT
We've got a few minutes before
drop off.

Scott sees a parking spot and parks.

SCOTT
Go to bed early this week.

ROCKY
Normal drill?

SCOTT

If someone's there, bedroom


curtains open. If not --

ROCKY
- - curtain closed.

He hands Rocky a roll of pound notes, some loose change


and two betting slips.

ROCKY
Nearly forgot.

Rocky searches his pockets and hands Scott some brass


cases.

ROCKY
Seamus told me to get rid of them.

Rocky, smiling, gets out of the car.

Scott watches Rocky through the windscreen as he quickly


walks away.

EXT. ENTRANCE - CENTRAL STATION - BELFAST - NIGHT

It's a wet and dark. A medium size, green car, parks.

A RUC CONSTABLE armed with a rifle walks across and taps


on the driver's window.

ANNOUNCER (V.O.)
The Dublin to Belfast train has
arrived on Platform One.

The windows comes down. The constable looks into the car
then retreats back to the entrance.

Sinead now 30, wearing a black trouser suit, carrying a


suitcase, hurries from the station to the green car.

The car's passenger door flies open. She throws the


suitcase into the back and climbs aboard. The car moves
off.

INT. MAJOR WILSON'S OFFICE - NIGHT

Major Wilson, 50, Stocky takes off his dark blue rain
coat and shuts the blinds

MAJOR WILSON
(English accent)
You OK?

She nods.

MAJOR WILSON
Just in case.

He hands her a 9mm Browning pistol.

SINEAD

Thanks.

Sinead carries out normal safety precautions. Then places


the pistol into her waist band and covers it with her
jacket.

Major Wilson makes the coffee.

MAJOR WILSON
Milk no sugar?

Sinead smiles.

They sit, Major Wilson behind the desk.

SINEAD
Have the results come back?

MAJOR WILSON

Major Wilson holds up a brass case.

MAJOR WILSON

If this case is from the rifle


that killed your father (beat)
then your Uncle Seamus is
involved.

Major Wilson leans back in his chair as Sinead lets rip.

SINEAD
Bastard. He had an affair with my
mother.

Major Wilson leans forward.

MAJOR WILSON
You can't mention this to anyone,
especially not your brother or the
police.

SINEAD
I think he's Flynn's real father.

MAJOR WILSON
We'll deal with him after the
funeral.

They silently sit drink coffee.

EXT. BELFAST - MILLTOWN CEMETERY - SUNNY - DAY

A CHURCH BELL TOLLS. Father John, stern faced, with plain


wooden staff, leads the funeral cortge.

Flynn carries the coffin at the front. Stony faced, he


looks straight ahead. On his left marches Seamus.

The FOUR REMAINING BEARERS are struggling with the


weight.

SINEAD, wearing her black suit, leads the mourners as


they weave their way behind the coffin.

EXT. MURPHY'S FAMILY BURIAL PLOT

Sinead stands with her arms around Flynn. They watch as


the coffin is lowered.

Father John sprinkles earth onto the coffin.

FATHER JOHN
Earth to earth, ashes to ashes,
dust to dust; in sure -

The mourners file past the coffin and sprinkle earth into
the grave, then leave.

FATHER JOHN
- and certain hope of the
resurrection into eternal life.

Flynn stands alone looking into the grave. Seamus walks


across and puts his arm round Flynn's shoulders.

SEAMUS
Come and see me son, in
Flanagan's. We'll sink a few in
your dad's name.

Flynn nods as his Uncle walks away.

EXT. BELFAST STATION - CAFE - DAY

In silence Sinead and Flynn sit at the table drinking


tea. Sinead looks round at her fellow travellers.

Flynn looks up.

FLYNN
They won't tell me who the Brit
is.

SINEAD
Brit?

FLYNN
(controlled anger)
He murdered our dad.

SINEAD
You sure?

Flynn loses it.

FLYNN
I was fucking there!

Sinead looks round. They are being looked at.

SINEAD
Not so loud.

Flynn looks at the people in the cafe.

SINEAD
That's not what I hear.

FLYNN
What have you heard?

SINEAD
It was one of ours.

Flynn looks at his sister.

FLYNN
F--k off.

SINEAD
You need to look closer to home.

FLYNN
How would you know? You're working
on the peace process.

SINEAD
We hear things.

FLYNN
You could find the Brit.

SINEAD
I told you - -

FLYNN
Law and order shit. I'll find him

ANNOUNCER(V.O.)
The Belfast to Dublin train has
now arrived on Platform One.

They both stand.

INT. FRONT ROW - CATHEDRAL - NIGHT

The candles are lit and shadows dance on the walls.

The church is empty, except for Father John and Flynn,


kneeling in the front pew.

FATHER JOHN
We have to believe in the
teachings. Revenge, that God's
job.

FLYNN
Priests have fought before!

FATHER JOHN
We have to stand apart, not make
judgements until we know all the
facts.

FLYNN
Who's facts; theirs?

FATHER JOHN
This bitterness will destroy you.

Father John stands up.

FATHER JOHN
Talk to God. Let go of your
darkness.

Father John walks along the isle to the door. Flynn stays
kneeling in silent prayer.

EXT. STORMONT SUNNY - DAY

Stormont, the seat of government in Northern Ireland,


with its long drive and black lamp posts sits in colonial
splendour.
19.

INT SMALL OFFICES - SAME DAY.

Sinead's office is small, most of it taken up by a desk


and filing cabinets.

Sinead talks to JANE, 30, blonde.

JANE
When do you start?

SINEAD
They've given me todays off.

JANE
Good there's a dance tonight.

SINEAD
I don't know.

JANE
It's a laugh. You could meet
someone interesting.

SINEAD
Interesting?

JANE
You know.

Sinead laughs.

INT. BOXING GYM - SAME DAY

It's full with boxers, sparring, shadow boxing and


exercising.

INT. BOXING RING

Flynn's rapid flurry of punches is forcing back MIKE 35 a


TALLER HEAVIER BOXER.

Mike throws a jab to the head. It stop Flynn momentarily.


He shakes his head and charges in delivering body blows.

PATRICK, Mike's twin brother watches. Flynn throws an


upper cut. Mike hits the floor, hard.

PATRICK
That's enough Father.

Flynn storms out of the ring. Patrick watches him then


hauls his brother upright.

EXT. CHANGING ROOM - MOMENT LATER

Flynn sits alone on the bench with his boxing gloves off,
hands still bandaged. He violently punches the wall.

Father John appears in the doorway.

Flynn shakes his hand.

FATHER JOHN
That was clever.

Flynn looks at him.

FATHER JOHN
Get dressed - the police want to
see you.

INT. FATHER JOHN'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

Father John is standing drinking a cup of tea, watching


the large RUC Sergeant talk to Flynn.

Major Wilson, wearing his blue raincoat, turns the face


of his wrist watch away from Flynn.

He stays silent at the table, sipping and dunking


biscuits in his tea.

SERGEANT
The bullet entered in through your
father's forehead and exited
behind his left ear.

Flynn looks at him.

SERGEANT
Which way was your father facing?

FLYNN
Forward.

The Sergeant points with his pen at Flynn's statement.

SERGEANT
It says here that you thought your
father turned round.

Flynn folds his arms.

Flynn uncrosses his arms and leans aggressively on the


table. The Sergeant leans back in a synchronized movement
with Flynn

SERGEANT
We think your father was killed by
a sniper to your rear.

FLYNN
Have you arrested him?

SERGEANT
Who?

FLYNN
The Brit.

Major Wilson leans forward on his chair and surprises


Flynn with his English accent.

MAJOR WILSON
I'm -

FLYNN
What the fuck?

FATHER JOHN
Flynn.

Major Wilson offers his hand.

MAJOR WILSON
Major Wilson. I'm investigating
this incident from the Army side.

Flynn explodes from the table, the chair crashes to the


floor. He knocks the offered hand away.

FLYNN
Youse can fuck off.

Father John ushers them out of the room and goes with
them.

Flynn picks up the chair and sits at the table rubbing


his rosary beads between his index finger and thumb.

INT. FRONT DOOR - SECONDS LATER - DAY

Father John stands with the door open.

FATHER JOHN
How's the investigation going?

SERGEANT
It's early days.

Father John nods.

FATHER JOHN
You'll let me know as things
develop.

SERGEANT
Sure.

Major Wilson shakes Father John's hand. They leave.

Seamus, hiding in the shadows, watches.

Father John nods at Seamus then closes the door.

INT. FATHER JOHN'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

Father John towers over Flynn as he sits at the table.

FATHER JOHN
I've arrange for you to go South.

FLYNN
No!

Father John's face starts to go red.

FATHER JOHN
No!!

Long beat.

FATHER JOHN
There's a post, for a young priest
at the university.

FLYNN
Thanks.

FATHER JOHN
I'll let you know. Make a cup of
tea. Think what it means to be a
priest.

Father John leaves with Flynn sitting at the table.

INT. HOTEL GLENMACKIN - DANCE ROOM - NIGHT

The red upholstery gives the room a warm feel. There is a


bar and at the front, a dance area. Most of the tables
are full. On a raised stage, an Irish show band plays.

Scott and Ralph, smartly dressed, stand at the entrance


looking around the room.

Jane waves. Scott and Ralph walk over to her table.

INT. DANCE ROOM - TABLE

Scott as he walks across can see the back of Sinead, who


is wearing a simple black dress.

Ralph sits down next to Jane. Sinead turns round and runs
her eyes over Scott, then smiles.

JANE

Sinead offers her hand, which Scott shakes, and holds on.

Scott releases Sinead's hand and sits down.

JANE
Scott and Ralph work for Cyril
Lord, the carpet man.

Sinead looks at Scott and smiles.

SINEAD
That must be interesting.

SCOTT
Just a job.

JANE
Sinead's part of the liaison team
from the South.

SCOTT
Your accent; Northern Irish?

SINEAD
They told me you were fast!

The table bursts out laughing, causing Scott to blush.

Scott smiles.

SCOTT
Would you care to dance?

Scott bows, smiles and leads Sinead to the dance floor.

INT. FLYNN'S LIVING ROOM - SAME NIGHT

In the living room, the light from the silent television


flickers over the room.

Flynn stands with the phone in his hand as it rings.

The answering machine clicks in.

SINEAD (V.O.)
Hi, this is Sinead, I'm not here
at the moment -

He slams the phone down, picks up his glass of whiskey


and sits in the armchair near the television.

The glass of whiskey is placed on the table. Flynn rubs


rosary beads. The television light dances over him.

INT. FLYNN'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

The bedroom is functional, with a single iron bedstead.

A thin plain brown rug is lined up with a wooden crucifix


hanging on the wall.

Flynn kneels on the carpet, his hands resting on the bed,


he looks up at the plain wooden cross and starts to pray.

After a few minutes his eyes come down from the cross and
he looks into his hands.

INT. QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY - CORRIDOR - DAY

CAROLINE, now 22, still hippy looking, carries books as


she walks along the deserted corridor.

Flynn, with his head down looking miserable, turns the


corner. He crashes in to Caroline. Books fly from her
grasp.

Flynn, kneeling, has his head down picking up books

CAROLINE
Look where you're going?

FLYNN
Sorry.

Flynn looks up.

CAROLINE
Flynn! Father!

Flynn looks uncomfortable.

CAROLINE
Why didn't you tell -

FLYNN
- you went to England.

Caroline shakes her head.

CAROLINE
I never thought you would -

FLYNN
- I never had a choice.

They stand up, move apart and look at each other. Small
smiles between them enlarge.

Flynn shakes his head.

FLYNN
What are you doing here

CAROLINE
BA in Fine art.

Flynn laughs.

FLYNN
Still the hippy.

CAROLINE
You still boxing?

Caroline gently touches his face.

CAROLINE
I would have stopped that.

Flynn smiles.

FLYNN
Still fiercer than the lord.

They both laugh.

CAROLINE
The Lord won!

FLYNN
Come on.

Flynn pulls his coat collar up hiding his clerical


collar.

CAROLINE
We're not at school now.

Flynn takes her books and puts his hand through hers.

CAROLINE

Where are we going?

FLYNN
I'm meeting Sinead in the "Crown".

They walk, with hips touching, along the corridor.

INT. CROWN BAR - DAY

With stained glass windows and wooden snugs, the bar


bears some resemblance to a Victorian music hall.

It is crowded and noisy. Flynn and Caroline enter.

Flynn waits at the bar ordering the drinks.

INT. SNUG

Caroline and Sinead laugh as they talk.

INT. ENTRANCE

Scott enters and walks to the bar.

The barman is pouring a pint.

SCOTT
(to the barman)
A pint of Harp when you're ready?

The barman nods towards Flynn.

BARMAN

Soon as I've finished with the


Father.

Flynn looks across to the barman. He spots Scott. Their


eyes clash.

Scott walks towards the exits. Flynn moving fast goes


after Scott.
27.

He barges into a GROUP OF FOUR MALE DRINKERS spilling


their drinks. One of the drinkers pulls Flynn back by his
coat collar.

Flynn spins fast, fist raised clerical collar exposed.

The drinker steps back hands up.

DRINKER
Father!

Flynn lowers his hands.

A very large R.U.C. POLICE SERGEANT, 40, and FOUR ARMED


CONSTABLES enter the 'Crown Bar'.

They start talking to the customers and examining their


driving licences. Their manner is friendly but
assertive.

The Sergeant stops Scott leaving. He discreetly shows him


his British Army ID card.

Flynn is closing in on Scott.

The Sergeant stops Flynn.

SERGEANT
What's the rush Father?

FLYNN
Just seen a friend.

SERGEANT
He's a friend of yours?

Flynn nods.

EXT. CROWN BAR - DUSK

The winter's light is starting to fade.

Flynn sees Scott turn into Albert Street.

He sprints after him.

EXT. ALBERT STREET - SECONDS LATER

Scott is walking fast along the deserted street. The


sound of Flynn's running footsteps causes him to turn.

Flynn jumps at Scott.

Scott expertly throws him onto the ground. He places his


knee into Flynn's back. Scott pulls Flynn's head back by
his hair.

SCOTT
You're the priest.

FLYNN
You fucking killed my dad.

SCOTT
I did not kill your dad.

Flynn struggles.

FLYNN
You fucking did!

Scott walks off. An angry Flynn, charges after Scott.

EXT. ALBERT STREET - STREET LIGHT- SECONDS LATER

Scott turns, adopts a boxer's stance. Flynn runs into two


sharp jabs to the face.

Flynn starts boxing, throws a left - it connects.

The blood flows from Scott's nose as he weaves in closer


to Flynn.

Flynn throws an upper cut. It misses.

Scott spits blood into Flynn's eyes.

He tries to wipe his eyes.

Scott's right hand catches him on the jaw. Flynn, dazed,


falls to his knees.

Scott walks away.

A sudden rainfall drenches Flynn.

The CHOIR from the nearby cathedral start SINGING.

INT. ALBERT STREET - DRAIN - MOMENTS LATER

Flynn, still on his knees, vomits into the drain.

He stands up takes out his rosary, rubs the beads.

The rosary violently strikes the drain. It wobbles for a


few seconds, before it loses its balance and disappears.

Flynn grabs his clerical collar and tries to tear it from


his neck. He fails

INT. FLANAGAN'S BAR - MAIN ROOM - NIGHT

A scruffy, soaking wet Flynn enters.

The BARMAN looks at Flynn and points to the back room.

INT. FLANAGAN'S - BACK ROOM - SECONDS LATER.

Seamus sits with THREE HARD LOOKING MEN at a long table.


As the door starts to open, they're transfixed by it.

They raise their pistols. Flynn enters the room. The


pistols are lowered.

The three hard men leave.

Flynn sits at the table with his uncle.

SEAMUS
I expected to see you before this?
Son.

Flynn just looks at him.

SEAMUS
You look like shite.

Long beat.

SEAMUS
I'll get you a pint.

Seamus leaves the room. Flynn sits there rubbing his


imaginary rosary under the table.

EXT. GUN RANGE - DAWN

With the rising sun at its back Major Wilson's dark green
car hurtles into view, brakes hard, sideways on to two
targets.

In a blur, Sinead dives from the car, forward rolls up


and fires controlled bursts from a MP5K Machine pistol.
The targets are blown away.

Major Wilson, claps as he walks towards her. She removes


the magazine and shows the empty chamber to him.

MAJOR WILSON
You've lost none of your skills.

Sinead nods.

INT. GREEN CAR - DAWN.

The car windows are open. Sinead is charging the empty


magazine with fresh rounds.

Major Wilson looks at her.

MAJOR WILSON
He's your uncle

Sinead stops putting fresh rounds into her magazine and


looks at Major Wilson.

SINEAD
My mother couldn't resist him.

They get out the car.

EXT. GUN RANGE - DAWN

The medium sized dark red van parks next to the car.

Sinead's smile spreads as the driver gets out of the van.

SINEAD
Some carpet maker.

Scott looks at Major Wilson.

SCOTT
Sinead?

MAJOR WILSON
You know her?

They smile and nod.

MAJOR WILSON
Sinead your two I/C for this op.

SCOTT
How come?

MAJOR WILSON

Seamus Murphy is her uncle.

SCOTT
Does he know what you do?

MAJOR WILSON
No. This is important. It's our
first joint operation with the
South.

SINEAD

I can't find my brother.

SCOTT
The Priest?

Scott looks at Major Wilson.

MAJOR WILSON

Hes the key. Find him.

Scott and Sinead climb into the front of the van.

INT. FLANAGAN'S BACK ROOM - SAME TIME - DAWN

Flynn and Seamus are drinking Porter. Their table is


covered with empty pint glasses.

TWO LADS open the door and laugh.

Seamus glares at them.

They disappear. Seamus downs the remainder of his Porter.

SEAMUS
You want another?

Flynn puts his hand over the top of his glass.

Seamus picks up a tray off the floor. He fills it with


empty glasses and places the tray on an empty table.

He takes a tea cloth from a nearby chair, cleans and


dries the table. Flynn watches through his bleary eyes.

Seamus sits back down and stretches his giant hands


across the table, covering Flynn's hands.

There is a long beat as Seamus stares at his nephew.

Flynn lifts his head. He stares into his uncle's eyes.

SEAMUS
You're a priest for fuck sake.

FLYNN
What about -

SEAMUS
- killing's a sin.

Flynn stares at Seamus.

FLYNN
Priests have fought before.
32.

Seamus looks into Flynn's face and pauses.

SEAMUS
This fight is more than revenge.
(beat) It's for Irish freedom.
It's not about you or me, it's the
cause.

Flynn nods.

SEAMUS
Are you ready to lay down your
life for Ireland?

Flynn matches Seamus's stare.

SEAMUS
You'll be a soldier under my
orders.

Long beat.

Seamus looks Flynn over and shakes his head.

SEAMUS
I don't know if you can do it.

An angry Flynn jumps up.

Seamus stands, places his hands over Flynn's shoulders


forcing him to sit.

FLYNN
I'm as good a Republican as youse.

SEAMUS
Your temper.

Flynn looks at his uncle.

SEAMUS
You'll give your life, but can you
kill for Ireland?

FLYNN
It's a war.

Seamus looks Flynn up and down.

SEAMUS
You're no fucking good to me like
this.

Flynn glares. Seamus stares him down.

SEAMUS
Look at you.

Seamus tries to adjust Flynn's clerical collar. Flynn


pushes him off.

Seamus laughs.

SEAMUS
Come back tomorrow then we'll see.

FLYNN
Tomorrow.

Seamus nods.

SEAMUS
You're a priest, act like one.

FLYNN
I'm resigning.

Seamus shakes his head.

SEAMUS
No. Too good a cover.

FLYNN
What's happening tomorrow?

SEAMUS
We'll have a little task for you.
Just to make sure you're sound.

Seamus looks at Flynn then puts his hand over his.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - MORNING

Soft music plays in the background.

Caroline is at the table writing in her note book with


her reference books scattered around her.

Theres a knock on her door.

CAROLINE
Its open.

She looks up as Flynn enters.

CAROLINE
Youre a mess.

Flynn sits in her armchair.

CAROLINE
I cant get used to calling you
Father.

FLYNN
Just Flynn.

He turns round and looks at Caroline

FLYNN
Do you have whiskey?

CAROLINE
Do you need it?

FLYNN
Please.

Caroline goes to dressing table, and pours Flynn a


whiskey.

CAROLINE
Whats the matter?

FLYNN
Nothing.

Caroline stands over Flynn with the whiskey in her hand.

She leans forward to smells Flynns breath. Then looks


into his eyes.

FLYNN
I had a drink with my uncle.

Caroline gently touches his bruised face.

CAROLINE
He did this?

FLYNN
No.

Caroline hands Flynn the Whiskey.

FLYNN
To dad.

In one gulp the drink is gone She takes the glass off
Flynn. Caroline pulls him up and leads Flynn into the
bedroom.

INT. CAROLINES BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER

With the curtains closed its very dark in the room.


Caroline puts the light on and pulls the sheets back on
the bed.

FLYNN
Im OK.
35.

Caroline turns the light off, leaves.

We see Flynns outline as he undresses before climbing


into bed.

INT. ROCKYS CELLAR - SAME TIME

The cellar is lit by a bare weak bulb hanging from an old


brown cord.

The floor is covered with rubbish. Theres an old pissed


stained mattress in the corner.

ROCKY, 30, ruddy faced, which grows black heads, around


his ears. He watches Seamus.

On the mattress there is a sniper rifle with a telescopic


sight and two 9mm Browning Pistols

ROCKY
I was just -

Seamus looks at him.

He pulls the rifle bolt back and removes it. He opens the
brass plate in the butt and takes out a pull-through.

Using the pulls-through Seamus cleans the barrel before


looking down it.

Seamus looks through the telescopic sight at Rocky. He


holds the position. Rocky moves back and looks down.

SEAMUS
Feeling comfortable?

Seamus laughs.

He carefully removes part of the wallpaper behind the


mattress and places the rifle and one of the pistols into
the hide.

The other pistol is placed into his waist band and covers
it with his jacket

EXT. BELFAST - ROYAL AVENUE - DAY

Royal Avenue is filled with shoppers on this sunny day.

Rocky, wearing a scruffy blue fur-hooded parka and old


blue jeans. He is looking into the shop windows as he
carries out his anti-surveillance drills.
36.

EXT. BELFAST - GREAT VICTORIA STREET - MINUTES LATER

A brown Ford Granada pulls in and parks near the Crown


Bar. A few shoppers walk past the car.

INT. FORD GRANADA - MOMENTS LATER

Scott watches Rocky come into view. He walks past a red


van. The driver Sinead nods to Scott.

Rocky jumps into the car, pulls down the car's sunshade
on the passenger's side. He turns to Scott and smiles.

ROCKY
(excited)
They're using the hide.

Scott instinctively moves his head away as he hands Rocky


some chewing gum.

SCOTT
They havent used it in a long
time?

ROCKY
Seamus put a rifle in it.

SCOTT
What sort of rifle?

ROCKY
He threatened me with it.

Rocky laughs.

ROCKY
If he only knew.

SCOTT
Seamus Murphy?

Rocky nods.

SCOTT
What did the rifle look like.

ROCKY
Its the one with the brass plate
on the bottom and has a sight on
the top.

Scott smiles as he glances at Rocky.


37.

EXT BELFAST CITY ROADS - DAY

The Ford Granada is being driven down a city road past


parked cars.

The red van follows.

INT. FORD GRANADA-SAME TIME.

Scott and Rocky are still talking.

ROCKY
Called it a 303.

SCOTT
It had a brass plate on the
bottom?

Rocky nods.

ROCKY
He opened it and took out a long
piece of cord with a weight on.

SCOTT
Pull through.

ROCKY
He cleaned the barrel with it.

SCOTT
Did he say anything?

ROCKY
Just his happy self.

SCOTT
Great. Weve got a few minutes
before drop off.

Scott sees a parking spot.

EXT. SIDE ROAD - SECONDS LATER

The car pulls into a side road and the red van drives
past and pulls in further up the road.

INT. FORD GRANADA CAR - SECONDS LATER

Scott looks at Rocky.

SCOTT
Go to bed early, we'll be coming
in tonight.
38.

ROCKY
Tonight.

SCOTT
Normal drill if someones in the
house, bedroom curtains open.

ROCKY
If no ones in, curtain closed.

He hands Rocky a roll of pound notes, some loose change


and two betting slips.

SCOTT
The rest is in your bank.

Rocky gets out of the car.

Scott watches him through the windscreen as he quickly


walks away.

EXT. WOODED COUNTRYSIDE - OVERCAST - DAY

In a clearing with a four meter square target pinned to


one of the pine trees.

Seamus is wearing an old jacket. Flynn is dressed in his


working black suit with a clerical collar.

Seamus is bent over, picking up stones.

SEAMUS
Give us a hand.

FLYNN
What we looking for?

He picks two stones up, weights them and throws one to


Flynn, who catches it.

Seamus forces the other stone in through the pocket into


the corner of the jacket.

Flynn watches.

Seamus turns towards the target 30 meters away. With


speed, he flips the jacket back with his right hand.

In one fluid movement, he draws the pistol. He fires four


shots into the target.

They walk over to the target. Flynn walks close to


Seamus. He puts his arm around Flynns shoulder for a few
seconds.

Flynn moves slightly away from his uncle.


39.

The shots are in a tight group in the middle of the


target.

SEAMUS
Lets get practicing.

He hands Flynn the pistol.

Seamus watches Flynn as he practices drawing his weapon


without firing.

The movements become sharper and quicker. Seamus hands


him a magazine full of live rounds.

Flynn goes for it, its fast, two rounds strike the
target.

SEAMUS
And again.

Flynn does.

SEAMUS
Keep going.

Like a western gun fighter, Flynns jacket is flicked


back. There is a rhythm to his movements as the bullets
fly into the target.

The pistol clicks empty.

SEAMUS
Count your rounds.

Seamus and Flynn sit down and charge their magazines with
fresh rounds.

SEAMUS
At 30 yards, its personal.

Flynn looks at Seamus.

SEAMUS
Hell be quicker than you, better
trained, but youll have the
element of surprise.

Seamus looks up from charging his magazine.

SEAMUS
He wont expect a priest to have-

FLYNN
- a gun.

Flynn stops charging his magazine and looks at his uncle.

SEAMUS
Dont hesitate.

FLYNN
If I do?

SEAMUS
Youre dead.

They go back to charging their magazines.

INT. SINEADS BEDROOM - DAY

The bedroom is light and airy with blue colouring. Scott


and Sinead relax between the sheets.

SCOTT
Youre OK for tonight?

Sinead half smiles.

SINEAD
I was trained by your lot.

SCOTT
I normally work with Ralph.

SINEAD
You didnt talk to him in bed? Or
did you?

She laughs.

INT. CATHEDRAL - CONFESSIONAL BOX - NIGHT

Very small spots of light hardly penetrate the darkness.


The outline of Flynn kneeling can just be seen.

His right hand moves upwards and he pulls the purple


curtain slowly apart. A shaft of light dances over his
bowed head.

FLYNN
Forgive me Father for I have
sinned.

A shadow moves behind the lattice cutting off part of the


light.

FATHER JOHN
What troubles you?

FLYNN
Is it ever right to kill?

The shadow grows larger. The light lessens.

FATHER JOHN
Why do you asked?

FLYNN
Justice?

Long beat.

FATHER JOHN
Justice is a funny word its a two
sided coin. (beat) Its used
In defence of ones love ones. In
defends of one country. To defend
those weaker than oneself. (beat)
The people on the other side of
the coin see it differently.

Flynns head nods, then looks up.

FATHER JOHN

decide which one to take. I chose
mine some time ago.

FLYNN

sinned. Ive had impure thoughts -

The shadow grows smaller as the light grows.

EXT. MALONE ROAD - NIGHT

Flynn is walking down Malone Road. He keeps looking


behind him. A small van pulls in.

INT VAN - SECONDS LATER

Flynn sits in the passenger seat.

SEAMUS
Youre still wearing the collar.

Flynn goes to remove it.

SEAMUS
No, keep it on.

FLYNN
Where are we going?

SEAMUS
Youll find out.

He hands Flynn a flat cap and a 9mm pistol.


42.

INT ROCKYS CELLAR - SAME TIME

Sinead's headlight shines on the old dirty mattress and


other rubbish on the floor. She concentrates the beam on
the wallpaper covering the hide.

Sinead carefully peels off the reinforced wallpaper and


places it on the mattress then takes a Polaroid camera
from her pocket.

Using a flash, she takes a photograph of the hide. The


photo reveals the position of the rifle, a small box of
ammunition, some rope and masking tape.

At the back is a 9mm Browning pistol.

Sinead removes the rifle and unscrews the brass plate at


the butt end. From her backpack she takes an identical
brass plate and screws it onto the rifle.

Sinead and Scott communicate using radios hidden under


their clothes.

SINEAD
Hello Zero? Do you have a signal?

HEADQUARTERS (O.S.)
Zero Roger, signal strength eight.

Carefully, Sinead replaces the rifle.

She checks its position against the photograph and


recovers the hide.

She looks around the cellar, then leaves.

INT. OBSERVATION POST - NIGHT

A full moon shines on a clear night

Ralph sits inside the bushes looking through the


branches. The entrance is covered by a small camouflage
net.

He looks through the night-sight at the front of Rocky's


house.

THROUGH THE NIGHT SIGHT.

A small van pulls up outside Rockys house.

Two men get out, one wearing a flat cap.

RALPH (O.S.)
(using his radio)
Hello Scott youre going to have
company. Two men heading in your
direction.

Seamus and Flynn walk to Rockys front door.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - HALLWAY - NIGHT

Sinead appears and taps Scotts shoulder.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - STAIRS

Scott and Sinead draw their pistols as they quickly move


up the stairs.

INT ROCKYS HOUSE - BEDROOM

The bedroom is a mess.

Sinead guards the doorway. Scott moves towards Rocky.

He firmly puts his hand over his mouth. Rocky opens his
eyes and struggles.

Scott puts a finger to his lips. Rocky lies still.

Scott turns and looks at Sinead indicating for her to lie


on the floor.

Rocky quickly sneaks a drink from a small bottle of


whisky.

SEAMUS is heard KNOCKING on the FRONT DOOR.

Rocky pulls an old grey blanket over his head. Scott


pulls the blanket off the bed.

Exposing Rocky in his vest and loose fitting grey


underpants.

SEAMUS (O.S.)
Rocky get down here!

ROCKY
(whispers)
It's Seamus Murphy.

Rocky is shaking as he gets out of bed. He clumsily puts


on an old blue track suit.

Rocky takes another nip of whiskey. He runs his fingers


through his hair nervously.
44.

Scott watches him.

SCOTT
(whispers)
Stay calm, deep breaths.

Scott takes a deep breath. Rocky echoes his movements.

SCOTT
Good.

Rocky walks out of the bedroom.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - HALLWAY

Rocky opens the door. Seamus and Flynn who is wearing a


cap, brush past him.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - CELLAR

Flynn watches as Seamus uncovers the hide.

He brings out the rifle and places it onto the old


mattress. Seamus stretches further into the hide.

He bring out the pistol and releases the magazine from


it.

Seamus checks the chamber is empty and then replaces the


magazine. The pistol disappears into the waistband of his
trousers.

Seamus re-covers the hide and looks around the cellar.

INT ROCKYS HOUSE - BEDROOM

Scott moves very slowly to the front bedroom window and


looks out.

He puts his hand into the right pocket of his coat and
presses the hidden radio switch twice.

SOUND: TWO CLICKS.

HEADQUARTERS (O.S.)
Are you OK?

SOUND: TWO CLICKS.

HEADQUARTERS (O.S.)

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - HALLWAY

Seamus goes to open the front door.

Flynn, carrying the rifle, stands by the stairs. A


floorboard creaks. Flynn, rifle ready, moves onto the
stairs.

FLYNN
What's that?

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - BEDROOM

Scott and Sinead raise their pistols, arms stretched


forwards. Theyre covering the stairs.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - HALLWAY

SEAMUS
Nothing. Come on, we'll be late.

Flynn retreats back down the stairs.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - BEDROOM

Scott and Sinead look out of the window.

SCOTT
Hello Zero. A small dark van, my
location. Seamus Murphy and an
unknown. They have the rifle.

HEADQUARTERS (O.S.)
Zero Roger.

They watch as Seamus climbs into the passenger seat.

Then their eyes are on Flynn as he removes his cap and


quickly jumps into the drivers seat.

SINEAD
Is that Flynn?

SCOTT
I dont know.

SINEAD
Weve got to stop them.

SCOTT
Lets go.

They run from the room.


46.

EXT. FALLS ROAD - NIGHT

The van is being driven carefully along the Falls Road


past lines of parked cars. A car comes towards them with
its headlights on.

INT. VAN - NIGHT

The headlights highlight the inside of the van.

Flynn is driving. Seamus is sitting in the passenger


seat.

SEAMUS
Turn your fucking lights down.

FLYNN
What?

The car passes.

SEAMUS
Nothing.

Flynn is looking in the drivers mirror.

EXT. FALLS ROAD - NIGHT

The Ford Granada is 100 metres behind the van and


closing. It starts to rain.

INT. FORD GRANADA - NIGHT

The windscreen wipers are working.

Sinead is driving. Scott is looking into the glove


compartment at the tracking machine.

Every second it gives off a high pitched 'PING'. It's


getting louder as Scott's car closes on the van.

Through the windscreen wipers, in the distance, the van's


dull red rear lights can be seen.

INT. VAN - NIGHT

Flynn is looking in the drivers mirror.

FLYNN
That cars; following us.

Seamus glances into his rear view mirror and sees the
Granada.

SEAMUS
Youre nervous.

The engine snarls as the van accelerates.

SEAMUS
Slow down.

The van slows.

EXT. FALLS ROAD - NIGHT

The Ford Granada, with its windscreen wipers moving


rhythmically, is speeding through the rain, past parked
cars.

The Ford is caught by a car's headlights on full beam.

INT. FORD GRANADA - NIGHT

The headlights illuminate Scott's face, as he shields his


eyes.

SCOTT
Shit.

Scott leans closer to the windscreen.

SOUND: PINGING.

SCOTT
I can't see the van.

SOUND: PINGING STOPS.

Scott thumps the dashboard.

SINEAD
They must have turned into the
Beechmount.

SCOTT
Hello Zero, we have lost the van.
Signal lost; I repeat no signal.

HEADQUARTERS (O.S.)

The Sinead drives slowly as they look down every street


as they drive along the Falls Road.

EXT. CRUMLIN ROAD PRISON - NIGHT

On this well lit street PRISON OFFICERS are coming and


going through the front gate, which exits onto a main
road.

The traffic is light.

A PRISON OFFICER in civilian clothes leaves the prison.


He turns right and walks along Crumlin Road. Then turns
into a side street.

EXT. SIDE STREET - NIGHT

The PRISON OFFICER walks towards three parked cars. He


takes a set of keys out of his pocket.

INT. VAN - NIGHT

Flynn, and Seamus in the driving seat, watch the prison


officer.

Flynn winds down his side window. He stretches to picks


up the rifle from the back of the van.

Seamus stops him.

SEAMUS
Use your pistol.

Flynn checks his pistol to make sure there a round in the


chamber.

Seamus looks at Flynn. Flynn nods.

EXT SIDE STREET - NIGHT

The van closes on the prison officer. He looks round and


drops his keys.

He fumbles as he tries to undo his coat. His pistol drops


to the ground.

INT VAN - MOMENTS LATER

Flynn brings the pistol up. He flicks off the safety


catch with his right thumb.

FLYNN
Brits!

Flynn flicks the safety catch back on and places the


pistol under his right leg.

Seamus looks through the windscreen. He sees an Army


Landrover full of armed soldiers.

SEAMUS
Some times you have to take a
chance.

Flynn looks at his uncle.

EXT. VAN - NIGHT

The van is speeding through the back streets of Belfast


before they enters the city centre.

INT. VAN - NIGHT

Seamus pulls the brake on, parks and looks at Flynn.

FLYNN
I need some air.

He goes to get out of the van.

SEAMUS
Give me the pistol.

Flynn hands over his pistol and gets out.

SEAMUS
Ill be in touch.

He looks at Seamus then gets out.

Seamus watches Flynn as he walks away in the direction of


the cathedral.

EXT. CATHEDRAL - NIGHT

The sound of a CHOIR SINGING gets louder as he nears the


main entrance to the cathedral.

Flynn stops and looks through the open door. He


hesitates, before moving off.

Flynn stops and walks back into the cathedral.

INT. CATHEDRAL - NIGHT

The echoing sound of the choir singing fills the


cathedral which is lit by candles

There are a few people at the front listening to the


hymns.

Flynn enters the church. He makes his Sign of the Cross


and sits in the empty back row.

The pew squeaks as he sits.

An OLD MAN turns and glances at Flynn. Then turns back to


watch the choir.

Flynn mouths some of the words to the hymns. A tear


starts to trickle down his face.

A LITTLE GIRL (4) in a thick white anorak, with her


MOTHER turns and stares at him.

Using the right sleeve of his black suit jacket, Flynn


dries his face.

He looks up. The little girl and the rest of the


congregation are looking at him.

Father John watches from the side. Flynn spots him and
hurries out.

EXT. FLYNNS FLAT - NIGHT

The Ford Granada pulls in and parks outside of the flat.

INT. FORD GRANADA - NIGHT

A tired Sinead puts her head on Scotts shoulder. He puts


his arm around her. Their machine pistols lie across
their laps.

SINEAD
He blames you for dads death.

SCOTT
I know.

SINEAD
Weve got to find him.

SCOTT
He doesnt like me.

SINEAD
He will.

Sinead turns her head and kisses Scott.

They sit back in their seats clutching their machine


pistols.

INT. CAROLINE'S FLAT - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Flynn sits in the arm chair drinking whiskey.

Caroline stands in front of him.

CAROLINE
Whats up?

His shoulders slump.

FLYNN
Just tired.

Caroline moves towards the bathroom door.

CAROLINE
Ill run a bath.

INT. CAROLINES FLAT - BATHROOM - NIGHT

The steam rises from the hot water in bath.

Flynn is sick into the toilet. He flushes the toilet and


keeps moving the lever downwards like a nervous tick.

In the bath he scrubs and scrubs himself.

EXT. FLYNNS FLAT - DAWN

The sun is rising as Belfast wakes up.

The engine of the Ford Granada starts as Scott and Sinead


drives away from Flynns flat.

EXT. ROUGH GROUND - NIGHT

The half moon lies high in the clear sky. In a clump of


bushes, the shape of the Biker can just be made out.

He faces towards Holywood Barracks main gate sitting


sideways on his bike.

EXT. HOLYWOOD BARRACKS - NIGHT

The sentry pulls up the barrier. A dark red car passes


under the barrier. It joins the main traffic flow on its
way to Belfast.

The Biker, wearing a helmet, follows on his motorbike two


cars to its rear.

INT. DARK RED CAR - NIGHT

Scott, driving, looks in his rear mirrors and notes the


motorbike and the other traffic.

Scott slows down allowing the traffic to pass.

The motorbike passes. Scott looks at the rider.

EXT. SIDE ROAD - NIGHT

The Biker waits in a side road. He watches until Scotts


car passes. The Biker waits a few seconds before turning
back onto the main road.

EXT. MAIN ROAD - NIGHT

The Biker watches Scotts car to the front. He hangs back


behind a lorry and two cars.

Scott turns off onto the Lisburn Road.

EXT. LISBURN ROAD - NIGHT

Lisburn Road has more parked cars. There is less traffic.


The Biker has to hang back to the limit of his vision.

Scott suddenly speeds up. The Biker lets him go.

EXT. SIDE ROAD - OVER LOOKING THE GLENMACKIN - NIGHT

The Biker watches Scott turn into The Glenmackin Hotel


car park. Scott locks his car before he walks into the
hotel.

INT. GLENMACKIN HOTEL - DINING ROOM

A few couples are eating. Scott walks across to Sinead,


sitting on her own in the far corner.

EXT. GLENMACKIN HOTEL - CAR PARK

The Biker, 30, secures his helmet and packs his jacket
into the panniers.

He runs his fingers through his long hair and walks into
the hotel.

INT. GLENMACKIN HOTEL - DINNING ROOM

The Biker walks past the entrance to the dinning room. He


sees Scott and Sinead eating.

INT. GLENMACKIN HOTEL - LOBBY

The Biker talks on the hotel phone.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE - HALL - 20 MINUTES LATER - NIGHT

Theres a knock on the door. Caroline looks through the


spy hole.

SPY HOLE.

Its filled by the large shape of Seamus. Caroline opens


the door.

Seamus brushes her aside in his haste to go to the


bedroom.

Caroline storms after him.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE - BEDROOM

Seamus switches on the lights and pulls the bedding off


Flynn exposing his nakedness.

Caroline stands behind Seamus trying to get past.

Flynn looks at both of them.

CAROLINE
I couldnt stop him.

SEAMUS
Weve got work to do.

Flynn places his feet on the floor and pulls his pants
on.

FLYNN
What work?

CAROLINE
You work for him?

Caroline tries again to get past Seamus. She fails.

SEAMUS
Weve found your man.

CAROLINE
What fucking man?

They leave with a frustrated Caroline standing there.

INT SMALL DARK BLUE CAR - NIGHT

Seamus is driving.

SEAMUS
Hes at the Glenmackin meeting his
girlfriend.

FLYNN
I want to get this over with.

Seamus pulls a pistol from his waistband. He passes it to


Flynn.

Flynn automatically releases the magazine. Pulls the side


back. Checks the breech is clear. He replaces the
magazine.

Flynn puts a round into the breech. The weapon is


charged.

SEAMUS
Youve remembered your drills?

Flynn looks at Seamus.

FLYNN
Im not stupid!

Flynn puts the pistol in the waistband of his trousers.

EXT. GLENMACKIN HOTEL - CAR PARK - NIGHT

Seamuss car pulls into the crowded car park and parks
car faces outwards towards the exit.

Flynn shakes his head.

FLYNN
This is it. No more!

INT. GLENMACKIN HOTEL - RECEPTION AREA

Scott and Sinead hand in hand, smiling, walk into the


well lit reception area.

Sinead kisses Scott on the cheek. Then breaks away.

SINEAD
Im going to the loo.

Scott starts singing to himself as walks past the


reception.

SCOTT
I got a black magic woman and she
going to put spell on -

The receptionist smiles at him. Scott notices and stops.


Then smiles to himself.

INT. SEAMUSS CAR

Seamus spots Scott who is highlighted by the lights at


the hotel entrance.

Seamus looks at Flynn.

SEAMUS
Relax.

Flynn remains silent.

SEAMUS
Its for your Dad.

Flynn shakes his head.

FLYNN
Yeah!

Seamus nudges Flynn.

FLYNN
(short and sharp)
I know.

Flynn sits there staring at Scott. He checks his pistol.


Flynn pulling the slide half back.

He looks in the chamber. The head of the round can be


seen. It clicks shut.

SEAMUS
Ready.

Flynn stares at Scott.

Long beat.

The silence in the car is broken when Flynn opens the


door.

EXT. GLENMACKIN HOTEL - CAR PARK

Scott saunters towards his car. Flynn, walks with


measured steps on a collision course with Scott.

He senses Flynns presence. Scott turns and faces him and


smiles.

SCOTT
Flynn?

Scott stands still looking at him. Flynn keeps walking


towards him.

SCOTT
Weve been looking for you.

The gap is closing between them.

Its down to fifty metres.

SCOTT
Sinead will be here in a moment.

Now thirty metres.

SCOTT
You alright?

Flynn flicks his jacket back.

Scott drops to his knees.

He flicks his jacket back.

Flynn draws his pistol in one flowing movement.

The gun points straight at Scott.

Scott, freezes, holds the pistol half way.

EXT. GLENMACKIN HOTEL - ENTRANCE

Sinead races towards them.

SINEAD
(screams)
Flynn!

EXT. GLENMACKIN HOTEL - CAR PARK

Flynn turns and looks in horror at his sister. He dashes


to Seamuss car and jumps on board.

The car accelerates away into the dark.

Scott and Sinead run to Scotts car. With a roar, Scotts


car races out of the car park.

INT. SCOTT'S CAR - MOMENTS LATER - NIGHT.

The roads are only lit by the moons light

Sinead drives at speed. They can just see the tail lights
of Seamuss car.

SCOTT
Hello Zero, dark coloured car.
Registration not known. Driver
Seamus Murphy and -

Sinead tugs Scotts arm. He looks at her.

SCOTT
- In pursuit, heading towards the
city centre.

HEADQUARTERS (O.S.)
Zero Roger. All stations VCP now.

SINEAD
Thanks.

SCOTT
Hell have to take his chance.

Sinead nods.

SCOTT
He could have killed me.

Sinead squeezes Scotts thigh.

SINEAD
Just get him away from my uncle.

Scott nods.

SINEAD
Promise?

Scott quickly looks at Sinead.

INT. SEAMUSS CAR - NIGHT

Seamus concentrates as he speeds past parked cars.

Flynn looks back through the rear window. He can see


Scotts car is closing in on them.

FLYNN
What was Sinead doing there?

SEAMUS
I dont know.

FLYNN
Whats going on?

Seamus stays silent. Flynn stares at him.

FLYNN
Is she his girlfriend?

Seamus glances at Flynn.

SEAMUS
I dont know.

Seamus glances in the drivers rear mirror.

Flynn turns and looks forward.

FLYNN
(shouts)
Look out!

FIVE UNIFORMED SOLDIERs with rifles appear to their right

EXT. ROAD - NIGHT

The soldiers run onto the road.

The car speeds through, scattering them.

The soldiers fire at the car.

INT. SEAMUSS CAR - NIGHT.

The rear window shatters.

Seamus laughs.

SEAMUS
Now were living.

FLYNN
Youre crazy.

Seamus, smiling, looks at Flynn and nods.

Flynn looks back through the shattered rear window.

FLYNN
They've stopped him.

SEAMUS
I'll drop you.

Flynn shakes his head.

FLYNN
This is a nightmare.

Flynn looks at Seamus.

INT. SCOTT'S CAR - NIGHT

Scott looks out through the front window. Two soldier


with rifles want to kill him. Scott winds his side window
down.

SCOTT
Army.

Moving slowly, he takes out his ID card and shows it to


the nearest soldier.

SOLDIER
(shouts)
Release him.

Scotts car speeds off.

INT. SEAMUSS CAR - NIGHT

FLYNN
Turn left into Malone Park and
drop me.

Seamus turns left.

EXT. MALONE PARK ROAD - NIGHT

Flynn is standing under a tree.

He watches Scott's car cross the junction of the Lisburn


Road and Malone Park.

He quickly walks away.

INT. CAROLINE'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT.

Flynn just stands by the door. Caroline sits at the table


looks at him. Flynns body sags.

CAROLINE
Whats up?

Caroline stands up and goes across putting her arms round


Flynn.

CAROLINE
Who was your man?

FLYNN
Im tired.

She leads Flynn towards the bedroom.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE - BEDROOM

The bedroom is lit by a small side light.

Caroline pulls the sheets back on her bed and then starts
to undress Flynn.

She loosens the trouser belt. The pistol bounces onto the
floor. Flynn stands there, trousers around his ankles.

CAROLINE
What the hell?

Flynn clutches his balls with both hands. Caroline stands


back looking at Flynn.

CAROLINE
Whats this?

Flynn stands there shaking his head.

CAROLINE
What are you doing with it?

Flynn climbs into bed.

FLYNN
Well talk later.

Flynn turns away from her.

CAROLINE
Whats happening to you?

FLYNN
He murdered Dad.

CAROLINE
You mad?

FLYNN
Sinead was there.

CAROLINE
And now?

FLYNN
Lets leave -

CAROLINE
- Belfast?

Flynn nods.

Caroline pulls the sheets back and puts the naked Flynn
in the bed. She picks up the pistol and leaves the room.

Flynn just lies there.

She returns undresses and climbs into bed with Flynn. He


turns round towards Caroline. She hugs him

Caroline moves her hand between his legs. He breathes in


sharply.

She slowly climbs on top of him. Her hips move backwards


and forwards. Caroline kisses Flynn fully on his lips.

Her hips gather speed. They both cry out as in pain as


they climax.

Silently they separate. Flynn kisses Caroline's forehead.


He climbs out of bed, pulls the curtains back.

They lie on the bed, staring at the full moon.

FLYNN
Lets start a new life.

Caroline holds Flynns hand.

CAROLINE
We talk about when we were kids.

FLYNN
(to himself)
It was for mum.

A small tear falls from Carolines left eye. She hugs


Flynn and places her head on his chest.

They lie there bathed in moonlight.

EXT. MALONE PARK - FLYNNS FLAT - DAY

The road is full of cars parked on either side. Scotts


car is parked near Flynns flat.

INT. SCOTTS CAR - DAY

He watches Sinead walk towards him from the flat.

She climbs into the car.

SINEAD
No ones seen him for weeks.

SCOTT
He must be staying somewhere?

SINEAD
A womans been around the flat a
few times.

SCOTT
What woman?

SINEAD
Looks like a mature student.

Scott starts the car.

SCOTT
Lets go to Queens

They drive off.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE - BEDROOM - DAY

The winter sun is shining through the curtains.

Flynn lies naked on the bed tossing and turning, with a


white sheet partly covering him. His clothes are
scattered on the floor.

Caroline, dressed for college, starts picking up Flynn's


clothes. She stares at his nakedness.

She shakes him. He starts to wake up.

Caroline kisses Flynn.

CAROLINE
(laughing)
Go and put some clothes on before
I do something I might like.

A smiling Caroline continues tidying the room.

A naked Flynn leaves the room.

EXT. CAROLINES HOUSE - DAY

Caroline exits her flat singing to herself as she walks


along Malone Road.

Caroline passes a medium sized rusty white van.

INT. WHITE VAN - DAY

Seamus and the Biker sit in the van watching her.

The Biker goes to get out of the van. Seamus, in the


drivers seat, puts his hand on his shoulder.

They resume watching Caroline as she vanishes around the


far corner.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY

Flynn, dressed in his suit and shirt but no clerical


collar, hears the door bell.

He rises from the armchair and goes into the hall.

INT. FRONT DOOR

He opens the door.

Seamus pushes him violently backwards.

INT. LIVING ROOM

Flynn stumbles back into the living room. He hits the


floor.

He stares up at Seamus. Behind him The Biker watches.

SEAMUS
Youre under arrest.

Flynn looks astonished.

FLYNN
What are you talking about?

The Biker watches the interplay.

SEAMUS
Cowardice

FLYNN
Who do you think you are?

SEAMUS
Were an army fighting a war.

FLYNN
I didnt sign on for this.

SEAMUS
You know the rules.

Flynn looks at Seamus.

FLYNN
This is a joke, right?

Seamus interrupts.

SEAMUS
Youll have a chance to explain.

FLYNN
Explain?

SEAMUS
Youre being Courted Martialed.

Flynn laughs. Then stops.

Long beat. Flynn stares at his uncle.

FLYNN
Youre for real.

Seamus nods.

SEAMUS
Lets go.

Flynn, on the floor, backs away from his uncle.

FLYNN
Im not going anywhere.

Seamus leans down to grab him. Flynn evades his uncle.

He jumps up and dashes for the door. The Biker hits him
hard in the stomach.

Flynn catches the Biker with a classic uppercut to the


jaw.

Flynns other fist explodes into the nerve behind the


Bikers ear.

The Biker crashes to the floor.

Seamus grabs Flynn. He pulls him back, spins him, before


Seamuss massive knuckles strike Flynn.

Hes hit below the nose. Flynn crashes to the floor.

The Biker hauls himself up and gives Flynn a kicking.

Seamus stops The Biker then picks Flynn up.

SEAMUS
Youll get hurt.

Flynn is in no condition to answer.

INT. QUEENS UNIVERSITY - RESTAURANT - LUNCH TIME - DAY

The restaurant is crowded. Students are piling their


plates high with pasta and chips dishes.

Scott, Sinead and a FEMALE STUDENT stand at the doorway.


She points out Caroline. Who is sitting in the far corner
at a table on her own, reading.

As they near Caroline.

SINEAD
Its Caroline.

SCOTT
Who?

Caroline turns. She looks at Scott and Sinead walking


towards her.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - SAME DAY

They stand staring at the overturned tables and chairs.

Scott goes over to a stain on the carpet and puts his


finger into it and looks at it.

SCOTT
Blood.

SINEAD
Shit!

Scott goes to the phone and dials a number.

SCOTT
Major Wilson. (beat) Boss; Flynns
been taken.

Caroline collapses into the armchair. She is being


comforted by Sinead.

CAROLINE
Seamus?

SINEAD
Probably.

CAROLINE
Why?

SINEAD
Well find Flynn.

CAROLINE
We were starting afresh.

They leave and close the door on Caroline

INT. FLANAGAN BAR - NIGHT

Rocky sits at the bar nursing a pint. Hes watching four


pensioners play cards.

Rocky looks as THE THREE HARD LOOKING MEN come in. They
glance at Rocky before they go into the backroom.

The Biker and Seamus enter, with Flynn between them. They
go into the back room.

Rocky finishes his drink and leaves.

EXT. BELFAST DOCKS AREA - GREY TELEPHONE BOX - NIGHT

The drizzle falls.

In the far background, the Belfast to England ferry is


berthing. Highlighted by Security lights and armed
guards.

NOISE from a PACKED PUB can be heard.

Passengers embark down the gangplank through the armed


guards.

In the shadows, Rocky is talking on the phone in the box.

You can just see Rocky as he constantly looks around into


the darkness and at the ferry.

INT. ARMY BRIEFING ROOM - NIGHT

Major Wilson is briefing.

Sitting and looking at him are Sinead, Scott, Ralph and


the four uniformed soldiers.

MAJOR WILSON
Sinead with Scott will enter
Flanagans first and make their
way to the backroom door. (beat)
One minute later, Ralphs team
will secure the bar room.

He looks at them making sure they understand

INT. FLANAGANS - BACKROOM - NIGHT

Theres a wooden six foot table draped with an a Irish


Tricolour. The three hard men will judge Flynn.

They sit behind the table looking at him. In front of


them on the table is the Green book. The PIRA rule
book.

Guarding the door are the Two boxing brothers, Mike AND
Patrick.

Flynn sits on a small chair in the front facing the


table.

Hes been cleaned up, but bruises around the face are
surfacing. Seamus, with the Biker, sit at the back of the
room.

Father John enters the room and stands near Seamus and
the Biker.

The middle Judge reads out the charge.

MIDDLE JUDGE.
You are charged with cowardice in
the presence of the enemy. (beat)
How do you plead?

Flynn laughs.

FLYNN
Youre joking.

Father John walks forward and whispers in Flynns ear.

FATHER JOHN
If youre found guilty youll be
executed.

The room goes silent. Flynn Stands turns round and looks
at Father John.

MIDDLE JUDGE.
How do you plead?

Flynn stands up and looks at Father John

What are you doing here?

Father John just looks passed Flynn

Flynn shakes his head.

Flynn turns back to his judges.

FLYNN
You can play your games without
me.

The two brothers move fast. Flynn is back in his chair.


They stand behind him.

Flynn looks up at the brothers.

FLYNN
We boxed -

MIDDLE JUDGE
- How do you plead?

Flynn stares back at the judge.

FLYNN
Its not for you to judge me.

MIDDLE JUDGE
You broke your oath to defend
Ireland against its enemies.

Flynn struggles to stand. Hes held firm by the two


brothers.

FLYNN
You bastards!

MIDDLE JUDGE
If you say nothing we will presume
youre guilty.

There is a long beat.

MIDDLE JUDGE
Have you anything to say?

Into the room bursts a YOUNG TEENAGER.

TEENAGER
The Brits are coming.

They all move to the back of the room dragging Flynn with
them.

A wardrobe is pulled out from the wall and they disappear


behind it.

EXT. FLANAGANS - NIGHT

Scott pulls up just short of Flanagans.

Sinead and Scott leave the car and walk to the pub like
lovers.

INT. FLANAGANS - MAIN ROOM - NIGHT

Scott and Sinead enter the pub. The drinkers close around
them. Sinead and Scott are forced slowly back.

The four soldiers led by Ralph, crash through the pubs


door. They aim their MP5K at the crowd.

The drinkers retreat.

TWO RUC POLICE OFFICERS enter. They start questioning the


drinkers.

INT. FLANAGANS - BACKROOM

The room is deserted except for the six foot table with
its Irish tricolour draped over it and the green book.

Sinead and Scott inspect a large wooden wardrobe. It


sticks out from the wall and reveals a man sized hole in
the brickwork.

It leads into a empty room.

INT. EMPTY HOUSE - SECONDS LATER

The house is empty, no carpets, no furniture, just bare


floor boards.

Loads of cobwebs - some have been broken showing a clear


path to the front door.

Sinead picks up a clerical collar; theres a splash of


blood on it. She hands it to Scott.

INT. VAN - NIGHT

Flynn lies on the floor, in the back of the van.

His hands are tied behind his back. Masking tape over his
mouth.

He hears the SNARL of the ENGINE as it accelerates and


decelerates.

He slides violently across the vans floor. Bullets crash


through the vans tin walls.

The van shudders to a halt. Flynns head hits the side of


the van.

Hes knocked unconscious.

EXT. FLANAGANS - NIGHT

Seamus approaches Flanagans and walks through the armed


soldiers.

INT. FLANAGANS - MAIN ROOM - NIGHT

Seamus enters Flanagans. The room goes quiet, everyone


stares at him. Ralph, with two troopers, throws him
against the wall.

SEAMUS
What are you doing?

They search Seamus and find nothing.

RALPH
Youre under arrest.

SEAMUS
What charge?

Ralph slides the plastic hand cuffs over Seamuss large


wrists. Then pulls them tight.

RALPH
Kidnap.

Seamus smiles.

SEAMUS
Who?

RALPH
Flynn Murphy.

Seamus laughs.

SEAMUS
Hes my nephew.

Scott and Sinead enter the room.

Sinead rushes across the room to Seamus. She knees him


hard in the groin. He breathes in slightly.

Seamus grins and looks at her. She prepares to slap him.


Scott stops her.

He turns to Ralph.

SCOTT
Release him.

Sinead and Ralph give Scott angry looks. He points to the


drinkers still held in the bar.

SCOTT
Theyll tell you nothing?

Ralph flips his jacket back. He pulls a large knife from


the back of his trousers.

Ralph cuts Seamus free.

Seamus walks across and Scott shakes his hand. Scott


tries to free his hand. He cant.

SEAMUS
Thanks. Give my regards to Major
Wilson. Its been a long time.

Seamus turns to Sinead.

SEAMUS
Its your birthday soon, what
would you like?

He turns and walks out of the bar.

The drinkers clap.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - CELLAR - NIGHT

Flynn is thrown hard down the stairs. He lands in a heap


on top of the mattress.

The sound of the cellar door being locked is heard.

Flynn winded, bruised and battered, gasps for air through


his nose.

He controls his breathing before he slumps into


unconsciousness.

INT. ARMY REST ROOM - NIGHT

They sit in armchairs. A despondent Sinead listens.

MAJOR WILSON
Weve ringed West Belfast.
Photographs of Flynn and Seamus
have been issued down to section
level.

Scott nods.

INT. BELFAST - DOCKS AREA - GREY TELEPHONE BOX - DAY

A nervous Rocky glances around Belfasts dock area as he


talks on the phone. Rocky listens and nods.

ROCKY
Wheres Scott - its urgent!

Long beat.

Seamus taps the glass. He points his pistol at Rocky.

Rocky drops the phone.

Major Wilsons voice is heard.

MAJOR WILSON (O.S.)


Rocky what is it? (beat) Rocky!

Rocky is on his knees at the bottom of the phone box.

Seamus listens in. Then replaces the phone.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - CELLAR - NIGHT

Flynn struggles with the rope tying his hands together.

The rope starts to loosen. He rolls and struggles even


more frantically.

Finally hes free

Flynn tears off the masking tape. His breath is fast and
shallow.

He painfully crawls across to the hide. Flynn tears at


the wallpaper. He uncovers the hide.

Flynn takes out the rifle and the ammunition and sits
with the rifle across his knees.

Fast as he can, he fills the ten round magazine.

Flynn pulls the bolt back and forces a round into the
breech. With his right thumb he flicks the safety catch
off.

The rifle is hidden down the side of his leg.

Flynn sits in the semi-darkness waiting for his captors.

EXT. BELFAST - FALLS ROAD - NIGHT

There are a few people walking in the drizzle.


73.

Rocky turns his collar up on his coat. He saunters behind


them.

He nervously looks round at Seamus.

Seamus closes on Rocky. He looks behind him at the black


taxi and nods.

The taxi pulls up level with Rocky.

The driver opens the nearside passenger door. Seamus


bundles Rocky into the taxi.

INT. ARMY REST ROOM - NIGHT

Major Wilson is talking to Scott and Sinead.

MAJOR WILSON
When Rocky was on the phone I
thought someone was with him.

SCOTT
Well have to go in.

Ralph runs into the room.

RALPH
The signals active.

They look at Ralph.

SCOTT
Theyre moving the rifle.

Major Wilson nods.

Scott, Sinead and Ralph run out the room.

EXT. HOLYWOOD BARRACKS - NIGHT

The heavy rain makes it a dark night.

A white van hurtles out of Holywood Barracks.

EXT. HOLYWOOD BYE PASS - NIGHT

The traffic is in full flow, carrying people home from


work to Belfast.

The van joins the traffic flow. At speed it starts to


weaving its way through the traffic. The angry drivers in
the other vehicles blare their horns.

INT. WHITE VAN - REAR COMPARTMENT - NIGHT

In the back are four troopers fully armed in their black


kit carrying MP5K Machine pistols.

They adjust their kit and check their weapons.

There are SHARP CRACK SOUND as BULLETS ARE FORCED INTO


THE WEAPON CHAMBERS.

With their weapons charged they sit back against the


vans wall.

INT. WHITE VAN - FRONT - NIGHT

Ralphs is driving, Sinead is in the middle with Scott on


the outside.

Scott and Sinead sit with their right index fingers on


the trigger guards of MP5K Machine pistols.

INT. ROCKYS CELLAR - NIGHT

Flynn hears the door to the cellar unlock. He moves his


right hand grasping the rifle.

He slumps his head down onto his chest, pretending to be


asleep. Flynn watches through his eyelids.

Mike comes down first with the pistol in his right hand.
Patrick follows.

Halfway down the stairs Mike turns round to Patrick.

Flynn swiftly brings the rifle into his shoulder. He


looks along the sight.

Flynn aims the rifle at Mike.

FLYNN
Drop the pistol.

Mike and Patrick look at him.

Mike lowers his pistol.

Patrick moves his left hand towards his waistband.

FLYNN
According to my uncle Seamus, a
bullet from this rifle will go
through both of you (as an order).
Drop it.

Mike throws his pistol down the stairs.


75.

It lands near Flynns feet. Flynn ignores it.

He keeps them both covered while he stands up.

Flynn motions for Mike to come down first and points to


the corner.

FLYNN
Lie on your stomach.

Then he summons Patrick.

FLYNN
Kneel next to your brother.

Flynn walks across places and the barrel of his rifle


against Patricks head.

FLYNN
Take your pistol out and throw it
over there.

Patrick throws his pistol and it lands on the mattress.

Flynn keeps them covered and takes the rope from the hide
and the masking tape.

He flings them towards Patrick.

FLYNN
Tie him up.

Patrick ties Mike.

FLYNN
The masking tape.

Patrick obeys, covering Mikes mouth.

FLYNN
On your stomach.

Flynn is very rough with Patrick as he ties him up and


covers his mouth with masking tape.

Flynn picks up the two pistols. He puts one in the back


of his waistband. The other in the front.

His jacket covers both from view. The rifle is placed on


the mattress.

Flynn looks up the cellar stairs as he hears noises.

He takes his pistol out and covers the cellar stairs.

EXT. ROCKYS HOUSE - NIGHT

Seamus pushes a trembling Rocky against his front door.

Rocky gets out the door key. He drops it.

SEAMUS
Pick it up.

ROCKY
What are you going to do?

SEAMUS
Just open the door.

Rocky opens the door. Seamus pushes him into the house.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - HALLWAY - NIGHT

The house is in darkness. Seamus switches on the hall


light.

Rocky is on the ground looking up at Seamus. Seamus


towers over him, pistol drawn.

EXT. BELFAST - QUEEN ELIZABETHS BRIDGE - NIGHT

The white van crosses the bridge. They slow as they hit a
traffic hold up.

INT. WHITE VAN - NIGHT

In her frustration, Sinead keeps cleaning the windscreen


with a cloth.

RALPH
Sinead.

Scott takes the cloth off Sinead.

SCOTT
Just relax.

SINEAD
How can I?

Sinead checks her weapons.

INT. ROCKYS CELLAR - NIGHT

Flynn waits in the half light, near the bottom of the


cellar stairs.
77.

His pistol drawn. Flynn aims at the half open cellar


door.

The weak cellar light comes on. Rocky comes into view.
Seamus holds Rocky by the collar.

The barrel of his pistol is pushed into Rockys head.

Seamus spots Flynn.

SEAMUS
What are you doing here?

Flynn aims his pistol at Seamus.

FLYNN
Still living.

SEAMUS
Lets put our pistols down.

FLYNN
Youre joking.

SEAMUS
We need to talk.

FLYNN
Do I look stupid?

Flynn aiming at Seamuss head.

A very frightened Rocky with a pistol pressed hard into


his head is shaking.

EXT. ROCKY HOUSE - ALLEYWAY TO THE REAR - NIGHT

Scotts team spread out in single file moving slowly over


rubbish. Mostly black bags.

Scott leading, halts at the rear entrance to Rockys


house. Behind him, Sinead kneels.

Ralph and the four troopers are further back.

They wait, listening.

A few dogs are barking in the distance.

Scott points to Ralph.

He indicated that he and Sinead are going into Rockys


house.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - CELLAR - NIGHT

Flynn and Seamus stare at each other.

FLYNN
What are you doing with Rocky?

SEAMUS
Why were you there?

FLYNN
Where?

SEAMUS
Albert Street.

Flynn looks puzzled.

SEAMUS
It was an accident.

Flynn charges.

Seamus fires.

Rockys head explodes as his body flies down the stairs.

Flynns face is hit by the blood.

Rockys dead body lands at his feet.

Seamus fires and misses.

Flynn instinctively fires.

Seamus is hit in his right shoulder.

Seamus flees.

Flynn rushes up the stairs firing his pistol.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - HALLWAY

Flynn dives onto the landing.

Scott bursts in from the kitchen.

He fires.

The shot misses Flynn.

Sinead rushes past Scott.

She flings her body over Flynn shielding him.

Ralph and the soldiers charge in.

INT. ROCKYS HOUSE - CELLAR

Rocky lies face down in a pool of blood. Scott kneels


next to Rockys body.

He gently turns him over. Rockys face is blown away.

Scott is sick.

EXT. ROCKYS HOUSE - NIGHT

The armoured ambulances arrive with blue lights flashing.


The light bounces off the small terraced houses.

Rockys body, on a stretcher, is wheeled towards the


ambulances.

A silent crowd watches. Some make the sign of the cross.

The little girl in a white coat from the church tugs at


her mothers coat.

INT. DARKENED ROOM - OVERLOOKING ROCKYS HOUSE - NIGHT

The room is lit by the flashing blue lights of the


ambulances.

Bathed in this light is Seamus. A dressing is being


applied to his damaged shoulder by A WOMAN IN HER 60S.

He is looking out at Rockys body being carried to the


ambulance followed by Scott, Sinead and Flynn.

He brushes the woman aside as he moves closer to the


window. Flynn looks round in his direction.

Seamus steps back.

The woman finishes off bandaging his shoulder. Small


patches of blood seep through the dressing.

He puts the jacket on, pushes his pistol into his


waistband and leaves the room.

The woman moves to the window and looks out.

Flynn stares at her.

EXT. ROCKYS HOUSE - NIGHT

Flynn watches Sinead and Scott talking to the ambulance


crew as he starts backing into Rockys house.

He checks the pistol in the front of his trousers and the


one at the back.
80.

SERIES OF SHOTS

Flynn moves quickly through the hall.

In the kitchen he draws his pistol from the front of his


trousers.

In the backyard he crashes through the door to the


alleyway.

Moving fast Flynn moves along the alleyway to his right.

Two houses up he moves slowly through the yard into the


house.

INT. DARKENED ROOM - OVERLOOKING ROCKYS HOUSE - NIGHT

The old woman sits arms held tight across her chest. She
looks at Flynn who is looking out at the scene in front
of Rockys house.

He sees Scott and Sinead looking round before running


into Rockys house.

Moving back from the window he kneels in front of the old


woman. Gently he unfolds the womans arms and holds her
hands.

She just looks at him.

WOMAN
Youre like your father.

FLYNN
You knew my father.

She looks puzzled.

FLYNN
Hes my uncle.

WOMAN
Is he?

FLYNN
I need to find him.

The old woman shrugs her shoulders.

FLYNN
Did he say anything?

WOMAN
Only the brothers.

FLYNN
Brothers?

Flynn stands.

WOMAN
You know Mike and Patrick?

FLYNN
The Boxers?

The old woman nods. Flynn quickly leaves the room.

EXT. FATHER JOHNS HOUSE - NIGHT

Father Johns small car is parked outside the house.


Father John throws his suitcase on to the rear seat of
his car.

INT. FATHER JOHNS - SMALL CAR - NIGHT

Father John jumps in the drivers seat, switches on the


engine and the cars head lights.

Standing in front of the car, highlighted by the


headlights, is Seamus.

Father John winds down the window to speak to Seamus.

FATHER JOHN
Get out of Belfast.

Seamus looks in the back seat and sees the suitcase.

SEAMUS
Where you going?

FATHER JOHN
Theyre looking for you.

SEAMUS
You can take me.

Father John shakes his head.

FATHER JOHN
I must protect the church.

Seamus kicks the car before he walks away.

Father John watches Seamus walk away in his rear view


mirror before driving off.

INT. MIKE AND PATRICKS - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Seamus is dressed in his suit and black shiny brogues. As


he looks in the mirror he adjust his Irish Guards tie.
82.

Watching him are Mike and Patrick.

SEAMUS
You need to get out of Belfast.

PATRICK
Its that bad?

Seamus nods.

SEAMUS
After youve dropped me off at the
station come back for Mike.

Mike watches them leave the room.

EXT. CIRCA 1900 RED BRICK TERRACE HOUSES - NIGHT

The full moon lights up this working class street.

Flynn turns into the street and watches a FLAT BED LORRY
drive away and disappear round the corner at the bottom
of the street.

Flynn walks to Mikes house in the middle.

He flicks his jacket back and takes his pistol out. He


hammers on the door, then stands back to one side.

Mike opens the door.

Flynns charge knock him to the floor. The pistol barrel


is forced into his ear.

FLYNN
Where is your brother taking my
uncle?

MIKE
I dont know.

In one movement, the pistol leaves the ear and is pressed


against the leg.

A CRACK. A SCREAM. The pistol is back in Mikes ear as


his body wrestles with the pain.

MIKE
Bastard.

The pistol swiftly moves to the other leg.

MIKE
Station.

Flynn vomits.
83.

MIKE
Welcome to hell; Father

Flynn stands up, looks at Mike as he puts his pistol back


into his trousers.

Mike glares up at him.

INT. BELFAST - TRAIN STATION - GREY PHONE BOX - DAY

Seamus with the phone to his ear looks out at the people
in the concourse waiting for the trains.

Seamus leaves the phone booth. He mingles with the


crowds.

Scanning the platforms he notices armed soldiers and


police manning the barriers to the platforms.

Queues are forming and every passenger is checked


against a photograph of Seamus.

INT. BARRIER - PLATFORM ONE

An RUC Sergeant is talking to a large rugby-playing


looking man. He shows him a picture of Seamus.

SERGEANT
Have you seen this man?

MAN
My size?

SERGEANT
Yes.

MAN
He was standing over there.

He points to the phone booths.

EXT. BELFAST - TRAIN STATION

Seamus exits the station and head towards the taxi rank.
Hes stopped by a SERGEANT leading an army patrol.

SERGEANT
When were you in?

Seamus looks puzzled.

SERGEANT
The Micks? Irish Guards.
84.

SEAMUS
(English accent with
a twang of Irish)
Left in sixty two, after Malaya.

SERGEANT
What are you doing in Belfast?

SEAMUS
Family funeral.

Seamus shows the Sergeant his false British passport.

The Sergeant looks at it. It shows Seamuss photograph,


but the name in the passport is Paul Grosse.

The Sergeant hands Seamus his passport back.

SERGEANT
Thank you Mr Grosse.

The Sergeant watches Seamus as he exits the station and


jumps into a black Taxi.

Flynn steps out of a second black taxi. He notices Seamus


jump into the black taxi.

INT. FLYNNS BLACK CAB - DAY.

Flynn gives instruction to the driver.

FLYNN
Follow that taxi.

DRIVER
Youre paying.

FLYNN
Hang back.

Flynn sits back in the rear seat. He can see Seamuss


taxi in front of him.

He watches as the taxi travels through the city centre


then up the Malone Road

EXT. CAROLINES HOUSE - DAY

Seamus throw some money at the driver and quickly walks


to the front door.

He looks behind him.

He sees Flynn running towards him drawing his pistol


front the front of his trousers.
85.

CRACK WHACK a round ricochets off the wall to the front


of Seamus . He crashes in through the front door.

INT. CAROLINE HOUSE - HALLWAY - DAY

Flynn hurtles in through the front door.

Seamus standing to one side trips him.

Flynn hits the floor hard.

Lightning fast Seamus has his pistol hard into Flynns


neck.

INT. ARMY BRIEFING ROOM - DAY

Major Wilson is talking to Sinead and Scott.

MAJOR WILSON
Weve just had a report that
Seamus was stopped at the railway
station.

Scott shakes his head.

SCOTT
Hes too big to miss.

MAJOR WILSON
These things happen. We know he
was dropped off in the Malone Road
area by a black taxi.

SCOTT
Where?

MAJOR WILSON
The Botanic Inn.

SINEAD
Thats where Caroline lives.

They both draw their pistols and force a rounds into the
chamber.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY

Seamus stands behind Caroline as she sits at the table.


His pistol is pushed into her neck.

Flynn sits at the table facing Caroline.

SEAMUS
Good.
86.

Flynn grips Carolines hand across the table.

Suddenly Flynn flips the table. He rushes Seamus.

Seamus steps back and sideways.

Flynn is pistol whipped. He crashes to the floor. He


looks up.

Seamuss pistol is against Carolines neck. He shakes his


head.

Flynn stands up, rubbing his head.

SEAMUS
Pick the table up and sit down.

Flynn pick up the table and sits down. Then looks at his
uncle.

Seamus smiles at Caroline.

SEAMUS
Go and make some tea (beat). Keep
the door open.

FLYNN
Let her go!

Seamus shakes his head.

FLYNN
You killed dad?

SEAMUS
That was a mistake.

With a look of loathing.

FLYNN
You enjoy killing?

SEAMUS
It was an accident.

Flynn spits on the floor.

FLYNN
You killed your brother.

SEAMUS
I have to live with that.

The SOUND of a VEHICLE ENGINE is heard. Its turned off.

EXT. CAROLINES HOUSE - DAY

Scott and Sinead arrives in the white van.

Troops are deployed around the house. Machine pistols


hard into their shoulders, reflexes ready.

Scott followed by Sinead push past the damaged front door


and enter the house.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE - HALLWAY

Scotts machine pistol covers all angles. He leads moving


slowly. Behind him, Sinead copies Scotts movements.

EXT. CAROLINES HOUSE - DAY

More troops in uniform and police are being deployed.

They cordon off the area, stopping the traffic and people
from walking past.

Major Wilson arrives. He walks across to the CHIEF


INSPECTOR, shows his ID card and shakes his hand.

MAJOR WILSON
Its my people inside.

CHIEF INSPECTOR
My Boss briefed me, just tell me
what you want.

MAJOR WILSON
Just secure the area.

CHIEF INSPECTOR
No problem.

The Chief Inspector walks away leaving Major Wilson


standing there looking at Carolines house.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE - LIVING ROOM

Seamus drags Caroline across to the window. He can see


Major Wilson and the cordon being formed.

He forces her against the wall behind the door.

With his pistol, Seamus indicates for Flynn to remain at


the table facing the door.

Long beat.

The door crashes open. Scott and Sinead charge in.


88.

They suddenly stop. In front of them is Flynn.

They turn round. Seamus has his pistol against Carolines


head.

SEAMUS
Put your weapons down.

The three of them look at Seamus.

SEAMUS
Now.

Scott lays down his machine pistol.

Sinead starts to swing her weapon towards Seamus. A cry


of pain from Caroline stops her.

Seamus forces the pistol hard into Carolines ear.

SEAMUS
Put the weapon down.

He aims his pistol at Scott.

SEAMUS
Youve got two seconds to get out
or hes dead.

Sinead looks at Scott who nods. She leaves.

Seamus looks at Scott.

SEAMUS
Lets make it clear, she will go
first (beat). Is that clear?

Long beat.

Scott nods.

FLYNN
Shes a woman.

SEAMUS
No one will get hurt if they do as
I say.

SCOTT
What do you want?

SEAMUS
Get rid of the cordon.

Scott opens the window.

EXT. CAROLINE HOUSE - DAY

Major Wilson, Sinead and most of the cordon look at the


window.

SCOTT
Pull the cordon back.

Major Wilson looks round and nods to the police


inspector.

The cordon starts to pull back out of sight.

Major Wilson and Sinead stand there.

SCOTT
He wants a car with a full tank,
out front.

MAJOR WILSON
He can take mine.

He gives Sinead the car keys, who leaves.

INT. CAROLINES HOUSE-LIVING ROOM

Seamus looks at Scott.

SEAMUS
You soldier boy, walk in front,
make sure all the doors are open.

Scott walks to the door.

SEAMUS
Stop, kneel down.

Scott kneels.

SEAMUS
Flynn, kneel behind your new
friend.

He holds Caroline around her neck and places his pistol


behind her ear. Caroline cries out in pain.

Flynn turns, hand raised.

SEAMUS
Thats a reminder.

Scott grabs Flynn.

SCOTT
Come on.

Scott goes to stand up.

SEAMUS
You know the score, crawl.

They crawl out of the room.

EXT. CAROLINES HOUSE - DAY

Major Wilson and Ralph watch as Scott and Flynn crawl out
of the front door.

Seamus, with the pistol held against Carolines head,


frames the doorway.

Major Wilsons car sits waiting for Seamus.

Major Wilson walks towards Seamus holding the car keys in


front of him.

MAJOR WILSON
You know how this is going to end
Seamus.

Seamus smiles.

SEAMUS
Nice to see you too.

His face hardens.

SEAMUS
Give Flynn the keys.

MAJOR WILSON
You won't get away with it.

SEAMUS
Ill take my chance.

MAJOR WILSON
Youve got no chance.

SEAMUS
Flynn, get the keys - youre
driving.

Flynn stands up. Major Wilson hands the keys over to him.

SEAMUS
Get in the car, start the engine.

Flynn does as instructed.

INT. MAJOR WILSONS CAR - DAY

Flynn sits in the driver seat waiting. The cars engine


is running.
91.

EXT. MAJOR WILSON CAR - DAY

SEAMUS
I have taken up the first pressure
on the trigger.

Seamus looks straight at the major.

SEAMUS
If anything happens; shes dead.

Major Wilson moves back with his hands open in front of


him.

Seamus is holding Caroline tight to his body. The pistol


is aimed at her head.

They clumsily walk to the car.

INT. MAJOR WILSONS CAR - MOMENTS LATER

Flynn slips into first gear without the pitch or the


speed of the engine changing.

The rear door is opened. Caroline is thrown in.

Flynn floors the accelerator. The door slams shut.

Seamus fires.

The shot shatters the drivers side window.

The car stalls.

Seamus jumps into the rear seat. He pushes Caroline down


into the seat well.

EXT. MAJOR WILSONS CAR - SECONDS LATER

Major Wilson and Sinead react, in a flash weapons are


drawn. They rush the car.

They stop and lower their weapons.

INT. MAJOR WILSONS CAR

Seamus has his foot on Caroline. His pistol against


Flynns head.

SEAMUS
Nice try.

Flynns knuckles are white as he grips the steering


wheel.

SEAMUS
Start the engine.

The engine starts.

SEAMUS
Now drive slowly away.

Flynn engages first gear and drives slowly away from


Carolines flat.

Seamus still holding Caroline down looks back through the


rear window and sees Major Wilson, Scott and Sinead
staring at him.

EXT. M1 BELFAST TO DUBLIN MOTORWAY - DAY

SERIES OF SHOTS

There is a steady flow of traffic heading south.

Ahead a road block stops the other traffic and waves them
through.

Leading in the Majors car. Flynn drives with Caroline


and Seamus in the back.

Followed by the white van. Sinead drives, the Major in


the middle with Scott on the outside.

In the back are the four armed soldier in their black


kit.

Theyre moving at speed on the deserted motorway.

INT. MAJOR WILSONS CAR - DAY.

Seamus looks back and sees the white van.

Seamus turns to his from and scans the highway to his


front. He looks ahead at the hedgerows to his front and
sides.

SEAMUS
Slow down.

The noise of the ENGINE DE-ACCELERATION fills the car.

EXT. MAJOR WILSONS CAR - SECONDS LATER

The SOUND of TWO SHOTS rings out.

The nearside tyres implode causing the car to swerve from


side to side.

INT. MAJOR WILSONS CAR - SECONDS LATER

Flynn wrestles to control it. Seamus violently forces the


gun into Flynns neck.

Caroline, seeing her chance, attacks Seamus. With one


swipe, she is hurtled, dazed, backwards.

Caroline slumps into the bottom of the car.

The car slows, then stops.

The pistol is still pressed into Flynns neck.

Seamus turns sideways and looks around.

All he can see is the car and the white van to his rear.

Seamus looks to his front. A blue van pulls up fifty


metres to his front.

SIX BLACK CLOTHED SPECIAL FORCES TROOPS debus from the


van. They spread across the road.

Long beat.

SEAMUS
This is what were going to do.

He pushes the pistol hard into Flynns neck. He cries


out.

FLYNN
You bastard.

SEAMUS
Youre are going to crawl out of
the car and lie still on the road.

FLYNN
Then what?

SEAMUS
Its your girls life.

Flynn looks at Seamus.

SEAMUS
Do it.

Flynn opens the drivers door.

EXT. MAJOR WILSONS CAR - MOMENTS LATER

The drivers door opens, Flynn crawls out.

He lies still on his side of the road.

Seamus drags Caroline out with a pistol to her head.

He cannot see Flynn.

Flynn puts his arm round his back and feels the pistol.

Seamus drags Caroline round the front of the car to


Flynn.

SEAMUS
Get up!

Flynn stands up.

SEAMUS
Lets go and have a chat with my
friend.

They walk towards Scott and Major Wilson.

The special forces troops in the white van debus and line
up behind Scott and the major.

Seamus has his eyes on Major Wilson.

He fails to notice Flynn is getting closer and closer to


Caroline.

Flynn strikes. He pushes Caroline to one side.

It breaks Seamuss grasp.

She falls, hits the road and cries out.

Flynn, in one fluid movement, flicks his jacket back,


draws his pistol.

The finger is on the trigger.

The pistol inches from Seamuss face.

Flynn starts shaking. Hes stares into Seamuss face.

Flynn cant kill.

Seamus laughs.

His pistol rapidly moves towards Flynn face.

His finger tightens on the trigger.

A shot rings out.

Seamuss head explodes.

Sinead stands there with her pistol smoking.

Flynn cradles his uncle, looks up and stares at his


sister

EXT. MURPHYS FAMILY BURIAL PLOT - DUSK

Its overcast. The last of the daylight is leaving.

Scott and Sinead stand behind Flynn and Caroline.

Flynn in a dark suit and tie stands hand in hand with


Caroline looking at the plain headstone.

He takes out his hankie and wipes off a speak off dust
from the headstone.

Insert: Seamus Murphy killed 1979 a victim of the


troubles. RIP.

They stand in a line in silent prayer.

Finished Scott and Sinead make the sign of the cross.

Flynn and Caroline dont.

The day darkens.

FADE OUT.
