MULTI-MEDIA AUTHORING TEMPLATE

Name: Alicia Rowan

PART A:
Students will work in groups of 3 to create a video using WindowsLive Movie Maker. The video should consist of who Gregor
Mendel was and what important contributions he made to become known as the Father of Genetics. The video should contain
images of these contributions as well as an audio overlay. The video should be between 2-3 minutes in length and appropriately
address why Gregor Mendel deserves recognition in the world of science. Once the video has been completed, students will share
their finished movie with the class. By requiring students to write about the history of Mendel, a higher level of LoTi is reached.
The students will be applying information they have learned about Mendel and applying it to a real life situation.

S7L3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain how organisms reproduce either
sexually or asexually and transfer genetic information to determine the traits of their offspring. a.
Construct an explanation supported with scientific evidence of the role of genes and chromosomes in
the process of inheriting a specific trait. b. Develop and use a model to describe how asexual
reproduction can result in offspring with identical genetic information while sexual reproduction
results in genetic variation. (Clarification statement: Models could include, but are not limited to, the
use of monohybrid Punnett squares to demonstrate the heritability of genes and the resulting genetic
variation, identification of heterozygous and homozygous, and comparison of genotype vs.
phenotype.) c. Ask questions to gather and synthesize information about the ways humans influence
the inheritance of desired traits in organisms through selective breeding. (Clarification statement:
The element specifically addresses artificial selection and the ways in which it is fundamentally
different from natural selection.)
Brief Description of Learning Experience:
The project will be introduced to students once they have learned the basics of Mendels discovery of heredity in pea plants. The
project should take approximately two class periods, including sharing the completed project. The students in the class will be
able to see how important Mendels discoveries were to the world of science. Student work will be assessed by how long the
video is, whether there is audio, and if a history of Gregor Mendel was correctly presented. The teacher will then provide
feedback once all videos are complete by addressing all of the important events that Mendel took part of to influence science
today.

Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: What LoTi level would this lesson be and Why? Students will be able to
reach a LoTi level 4 through this assignment. Students will be utilizing the program and technology to create a product that
connects the content to the real world. Higher order thinking will be applied during the activity and students will be creating and
sharing their movie.

Importance of technology:
The implementation of this technology allows students to connect to the content on a personal level. They are able to create their
own movie based on their personal style while still providing important information to other students. Allowing students to be
more engaged with each other is critical in creating a collaborative learning environment. The students could use alternative, non-
technology ways to present this material, but the incorporation of technology will allow for more interaction and student
engagement.
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing multimedia projects as a model for your project (whether in part or whole),
include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you borrowed from others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding internet safety and student
privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how youd minimize risks to
students/yourself, alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and follow school districts Internet Safety/Use Policy.
Requiring students to share their completed movie with the class may pose possible confidentiality issues. The students will be
required to upload their assignment to the private classroom blog (such as Edmodo). This ensures that work is not public and
personal information is not shared. It will also be clear to students that when adding their names to the product that only first
names should be used and no other identifying personal information.
Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring activity:
This will help students increase their ability to use technology to create a finished product. Students will most likely require
assistance when first utilizing MovieMaker.
