Image Artifacts
Artifacts are unintended optical densities on an image.
Or a false visual feature that simulate anatomy or obscures tissues.
Scatter and fog are excluded.
Categories of artifacts:
Hardware-
Image receptor artifacts/imaging plate artifacts
Includes dust, dirt, scratches, and cracks from handling them and from the cassette
going in and out of the reader. They appear as radiolucent foreign bodies on the
image.
Ghost images are from an incomplete erasure of the imaging plate and usually
occurs when high techniques are used in quick succession. Two images will be on
one, the picture shows a pelvis superimposed on a chest x-ray.

Plate reader artifacts

Extra lines/patterns on image, this can be inconsistent and due to plate reader
electronics malfunctioning. It will appear on multiple images, not the same plate.
Looks like extra lines going across the image.

Printer artifacts
Dirt in the laser printer will cause fine white lines in the image. The service engineers
must be called to clean and calibrate, these are easy to differentiate from other
artifacts.
Software artifacts
Image processing artifacts
Histogram errors
Lindsey Shriner

It is applied to all image data even if the software cannot find the borders. When the
image is rescaled the software cannot properly adjust the image to the reference
histogram, the LUT then cannot apply the proper contrast.
Rescaling
Image compression is when the image is compressed for transmission but some post
processing applications need raw data. (lossy/lossless)
Object artifact
Collimation, when left uncollimated unattenuated radiation strike the IR and this can
alter the histogram. Using the wrong size IR will make the image appear small.
Patient positioning
Backscatter occurs when there is a crack in the plate for the photons to come back
through. It will appear as a dark line in the image. Usually happens when the cassette
is handled to roughly or dropped.

Operator errors
Cassette placed backwards so the back is toward the central ray. This will result in
an image with a white grid type pattern and white hinges.
