9: Single Camera Analysis Okay Go

What single camera is?
A little bit about it.
The group Ok Go use a very difficult technique in all their music videos this is
called single camera. The way in which the music videos are shot is by having
one single camera shooting the whole video all in the same take. Instead of
stopping the take and having different shots, they came will continue rolling and
create different shots by moving themselves and the camera. There are many
reasons why directors use this technique. A key reason could be because this
technique is cheap and low budget to do because youre only using one camera
instead of using multiple cameras to shoot. This also saves time with editing as
they will only be editing footage from one camera as opposed to using a number
of cameras. Furthermore this technique is used by this band as a signature style
for the majority of their videos. This is done as it is impressive to watch because
these videos are very memorable due the different ways in which they are
performed with different tricks and skills and the way in which they have
constructed the videos so for example in the video The Writing's On the Wall in
the beginning they use different
objects and there bodys with writing
on them, this also makes the video
more aesthetically pleasing to watch
tricks like this to happen this also
makes the video memorable because
this will stick in peoples heads.
Another advantage would be that
when your using single camera there
is not a lot of crew that is needed to make the music videos.

A disadvantage to using single camera is that if a take goes wrong, it will take a
long time to retake the whole shot and you may have to recreate the set, there
may also be difficult to use a variety of shots especially if it is a conversation
going on, but this will all depend on what is being filmed because this can make
the shoot very boring, and not all that interesting.

This Too Shall Pass

For this music video it took a very long time to get this right, this is because the
video is set up with different little bits and bobs and tricks, missing one would
mean that you would have to start again this is one of the cons of using single
camera technique with these types of music videos. One thing that does work
well is that the artists are able to walk out of frame then re-join the frame and
continue the routine as the camera is still rolling.

I wont let you down:

For this music video it took a very long time to get this right, this is because they
strapped a camera to a fighting drone, this was good as this allowed, them to
follow and track to brand throughout the music video. This was good because
throughout the music video there were many different locations both inside and
outside. So for the start of the video it started inside and slowly moved outside,
giving the audience an area view of the music video as they moved it higher in
the sky to show you what was happening. As the music video continues the
camera seems to get higher and higher, but as the video come to an end the
camera is flying up to the cloud level to pan around the surrounding landscape
where they was shooting.

I would say that this technique is a very powerful one because I feel that is gets
you to force more on the music video then the song its self, because of the
amount of effort that had been but into the video as it is single camera it would
mean that one slip up that the whole videos would have to be started again. This
also shows the audience that the artist really cares about their music and their
videos as shown the amount of effect that is being put into them.
