reached new heights this past
week when Tea Party Express
member Mark Williams,
posing as NAACP President
Benjamin Jealous, wrote a
satirical blog post addressed
to Abraham Lincoln. Williams

Black Police Officers Win Discrimination Suit

Five Black District of Columbia police officers, who
filed a racial discrimination complaint two years ago against
department officials, have been awarded $900,000 in
compensatory damages by a federal jury.

Possible Breakthrough
in AIDS Prevention

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Researchers
are reporting a breakthrough against
AIDS. A vaginal gel containing an
AIDS drug cut in half a woman’s
chances of getting HIV from an
infected partner.
The results need to be confirmed,
and scientists disagree about whether
this amount of protection is enough to
justify using the gel now. But it is the
first hope of protection for women if their partners refuse to use
condoms.
Results of the South African study are being presented at the
International AIDS Conference in Vienna and were published
online Monday by the journal Science.
“It’s the first time we’ve ever seen any microbicide give a
positive result that you could say was statistically significant,’’
said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of
Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
The gel, spiked with the AIDS drug tenofovir, cut the risk
of HIV infection by 50 percent after one year of use and 39
percent after 2 1/2 years, compared to a gel that contained no
medicine.

In the study, women used the gel only 60 percent of
the time; those who used it more often had higher rates of
protection, and researchers said this is the key to improving
effectiveness, not changing the gel.
The gel also cut in half the chances of getting HSV-2, the
genital herpes virus.
Even partial protection is a huge victory that could be a
boon not just in poor countries but for couples anywhere when
one partner has the AIDS virus and the other does not, said Dr.
Salim Abdool Karim, the South African researcher who led the
study. In the U.S., nearly a third of new infections each year are
among heterosexuals, he noted.
The gel is in limited supply; it was made for this and
another ongoing study from a drug donated by California-based
Gilead Sciences, which sells tenofovir in pill form as Viread.

AKAs Reward Formerly Homeless Scholar
Quiana Childress, a summa cum laude graduate of the
University of Arkansas, has lived a life many would describe
as difficult. The Alpha Kappa Alpha member, who was once
homeless and forced to live in a car, recently received a
$25,000 scholarship from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational
Advancement Foundation at the sorority’s 64th biennial
convention in St. Louis, Mo.
Childress’ story also reached first lady Michelle Obama,
who praised the future medical school student for her
“burning desire to rise above her circumstances and her
unrelenting belief that she can succeed despite all evidence to
the contrary” during a commencement speech at the University
of Arkansas.
Similarly, former AKA President Barbara A. McKinzie
celebrated Childress’ academic success during the sorority’s
convention. “It would have been easy for Quiana to
surrender and become one of life’s tragedies. It is a testament
commitment to excellence that inspired her to rise above
the depths of despair to become a woman who is destined to
change the world. We are proud to embrace her and help her
achieve her dreams through this scholarship.”
In addition to being honored by her sorority and the nation’s
first lady, Childress has also been featured as “Person of
the Week” on the ABC network’s “World News with Diane
Sawyer.”

Vonetta McGee, a leading actress in popular 1970s films
Blacula and Shaft, died at a hospital in Berkeley, Calif., on July
9 after suffering a heart attack and spending two days on life
support, the Los Angeles Times reported. She was 65.
A family spokeswoman told the Times McGee’s death was
due to an undisclosed disease and not Hodgkin’s lymphoma,
which she was diagnosed with as a teenager.
McGee’s career began in 1968 in Italy, where she appeared
in the film, The Great Silence and was
featured in the comedy Faustina.
According to the report, McGee
despised the “blaxploitation” label
given to many films starring African
Americans and told the Times, the
term was used “like racism, so you
don’t have to think of the individual
elements, just the whole. If you study
propaganda, you would understand
how this works.”
After starring in films, McGee
appeared on television shows such as
Robert Blake’s “Hell Town” and the Courtesy Photo

‘Boot Camp’ Trains Future Minority Advertising
Leaders
The Marcus Graham Project’s iCR8 boot camp, a 10-
week initiative providing exposure and training to aspiring
advertising and marketing leaders, has teamed with AT&T for
this year’s program.
The Marcus Graham Project is a Dallas-based national
nonprofit comprised of diverse professionals who mentor the
next generation of advertising, marketing and media executives.
According to a press release issued by the program, only 16
percent of employees in the advertising industry were people of
color.
This year’s boot camp program allowed participants to
create a full-service agency called MetaTHINQ. The group
will go on to establish a full-scale market research study
and provide AT&T, Globe Aware, Passport and other clients
marketing and advertising solutions.
Jennifer Jones, vice president of diverse markets, AT&T
Mobility and Consumer markets, lauded the iCR8 boot camp’s
thrust and effectiveness.
“We are proud to support The Marcus Graham Project
and its mission,” said Jones. “By supporting unique programs

Anacostia Graduate Aims to be

Role Model for Young Black Males

At 17, Jordan Smiley
already knows exactly what
he wants out of life: to be
counted among the Black
men teaching in the nation’s
classrooms, where most will
also serve as role models for
their younger counterparts.
“I’ve never actually
thought about being
anything else,” said Jordan,
valedictorian of Anacostia
Senior High School’s Class
of 2010.
“I always thought I’d like
to be a teacher so that I can
make a difference in the life
of other Black children –
especially our young Black
males,” continued Jordan,
who graduated with a 3.4
GPA. “But this year really
sealed the deal for me as I
watched the new group of
teachers come in at Anacostia.
They were young and vibrant
and seemed to bring a new
energy to the teaching field.”
But Jordan said he also
noticed a glaring lack of
Black male teachers. “I
saw a lot of females but not
that many Black men in an
authority role,” said Jordan.
He said that while his
father was in his life, he’d
been raised in a single parent
household by his mother.
“My father wasn’t there all
the time, so now I’m involved
in a mentoring project with
young boys. When I become
a teacher, I want to set up my
own mentoring program.”
In the midst of eagerly
preparing for life at the
prestigious, historically
Black Hampton University
in Virginia—he was also
accepted to Morehouse and
Tuskegee universities—
Jordan took time to share with
the AFRO, his excitement and
sentiments for the future.
The affable, yet naturally
serious youth also talked
about meeting first lady
Michelle Obama, who was
the keynote speaker for
Anacostia’s graduation
ceremony, and how her gentle

will always be with him. “It
was both a nerve-wrecking
and happy occasion having
the first lady there,” Jordan
recalled, “because I was going
to be speaking to an audience
that was the largest I’d ever
spoken to and she tried to
coach me through by telling
me to try not to be nervous.
“She reminded me that it
was a time for me to take in
and enjoy because, after all, it
was my graduation, too.”
Jordan Smiley heads off to Hampton University this fall
where he plans to major in education and eventually help
fill the void of Black males in the teaching profession.
That advice proved
effective, as Jordan—who’d
already cemented his
oratorical skills countless
times in various leadership
capacities at Anacostia—
received a standing ovation
for his words of inspiration to
his fellow classmates. Most
are following his footsteps
into colleges and universities
this fall.
“That just goes to show
that because we live in
Southeast [D.C.] doesn’t
mean we can’t be successful
and go on to even higher
achievements,” Jordan said.
According to school officials
about 90 percent of Jordan’s
graduating class is expected
to go off to college this fall.
Shaneka Hope, cluster
leader at Friendship Public
Charter High School, which
partnered this year with
Anacostia, described Jordan
as a natural leader. “He’s
someone who’s highly
regarded in the school and
a lot of his peers look up to
him,” Hope said.

of an initiative geared toward
improving the school’s
academic performance, also
spoke highly of Jordan,

saying Jordan has consistently
exhibited initiative and a
desire for continuous personal
growth. “That just speaks to
the character and drive that
Jordan has,” Moore said.
Starting classes at
Hampton on Aug. 27 means
that Jordan, a sports enthusiast
who excels at football,
track and baseball, will be
first person in his family to
explore higher education.
His first year is being
paid for through scholarships
and Jordan said he hopes
to land a work-study job
as well. He plans to hit
the ground running, and
by his junior year, to have
established himself as one of
the country’s future young
leaders.
Jordan said he’ll miss his
friends and realizes he’ll have
to make new ones. However,
he added, he doesn’t think
he’ll be so eager to visit
home—which also consists
of an older brother and two
younger sisters— once classes
begin.
“At least I don’t think I’m
going to be home sick right
off,” he said with a twinkle
eye. “My mom and I have
a bet going that whoever
calls first—she or me—after
[my family] drops me off at
Hampton, has to pay the other
$50. I’m holding out, hoping
it won’t be me.”

Talibah Urban League is celebrating
Chikwendu 100 years of existence. It's
also celebrating a century of
service.
Ruth Standish Baldwin and Dr. George Edmund Haynes
founded the Committee on Urban Conditions Among Negroes
on Sept. 29, 1910, in New York City. Later this group merged
with the Committee for the Improvement of Industrial
Conditions Among Negroes in New York and the National
League for the Protection of Colored Women to form the
National League on Urban Conditions Among Negroes. By
1920, the name had been shortened to National Urban League,
the name it uses now.
What characterized the organization was its commitment
to providing direct services. While many other organizations
of the time and throughout the civil rights movement were
focused on concepts, principles and broad social changes, the
National Urban League stepped up to meet direct needs in the
community.

measure: The Restoration of Emergency Unemployment
Compensation Act (H.R. 5618).
We succeeded in that House of Representatives debate (270-
153) despite the 142 Republicans who voted in opposition.
Now, we need only to obtain Senate approval in order to
extend benefits until Nov. 30 and retroactively restore federal
compensation to Americans who were cut off as early as the
end of May.
As of this writing, however, the Senate’s support is being
blocked from an “up-or-down” vote by its Republicans. We are
witnessing the same tactics of obstruction they used to attack
our president and his Democratic congressional majority on
health care reform. This Republican filibuster is unacceptable

Urban League has done so by
always branching out from
its core -- which is helping

needs and accomplish their
short and longer-term goals.
Whether it be finding the
extra money to keep the lights
on or feed the family until
pay day or understanding the process and saving to purchase
a home, the Urban League
through its many affiliates
across the country helps
individuals and families
address and meet those needs.
That service continues as
the backbone of the Urban
League's efforts.
Next week, the National Urban League will celebrate
its 100-year milestone at a convention in Washington, D.C.
There, the NUL will showcase this service through job fairs,
and must be overcome.
We have stopped our nation’s economic hemorrhaging. Yet,
nearly one out of every 10 American workers is still struggling
to find employment.
Despite losing their jobs through no fault of their own,
moreover – and despite being required to look for work every
day – nearly 2 million Americans now have been without jobs
for so long they have exhausted their state unemployment
funds. As of July 1, at least 12,000 of those increasingly
desperate Americans are our neighbors right here in Maryland.
Under these difficult economic conditions, most
Americans understand that prompt action to extend long-term

the Congressional Budget Office rates aid to the unemployed
as a highly cost-effective form of economic stimulus. ... [A]id

aid to lapse ... is a recipe for even weaker job growth, not in the
distant future, but over the next few months.”
If extending federal unemployment benefits is both good for
our economy and morally justified, why, then, are Republicans
fighting so hard to filibuster us from acting?
Only those who are totally detached from reality would
suggest (as some leading Republicans have asserted) that
any American family would
choose to receive $300-$400
per month in unemployment
benefits rather than go back to
work at a well-paying job.
Economists advise us,
moreover, that we are not
going to bring our federal
and state budgets back into
balance by starving working
families. The key to national economic recovery is precisely the
opposite.
Knowing all this, however, we are left only with the
suspicion that the Republican tactic of obstruction is grounded
in raw politics. We must conclude – unless shown otherwise
– that Republican leaders, for political reasons, want the
economic recovery that President Obama and congressional
Democrats are building to fail.
This debate about the direction of our country, then, comes
down to a question of priorities, a reality that America’s voters
should take to heart on Election Day this year.

Maryland Couple Wins Carolee’s Dream Wedding Contest

On July 25 in New York City at the famous Empire Hotel,
Danielle Myers and Isaac Ward of Fort Washington, Md., will
have their first kiss as a married couple. The pair was presented
with a $40,000 wedding by CAROLEE a leading fashion
jewelry company, after Ward entered them into the Carolee
Dream Wedding Contest on TheKnot.com.
The grand prize includes a wedding designed by celebrity
wedding planner Bronson Van Wyck, designer wedding gowns
and bridesmaid dresses by Amsal, CAROLEE jewelry for the
entire wedding party, bridal make up by Bobbi Brown, and
bridal hair styling from Bumble and Bee. Myers and Ward also
were awarded a six-day, five-night honeymoon at Couple’s
Resort in Jamaica, a collection of tabletop appliances from
KitchenAid and a Wedgwood china set for eight.
Myers and Ward met in April 2007 at a physical
rehabilitation facility after an accident left Ward paralyzed.
Myers was an employee at the facility and a bond quickly
grew between them. They began to date and on New Year’s
Eve 2010, the couple discussed marriage and Ward proposed

“On Mother’s Day Isaac did the sweetest thing,” Myers
said. “He had my oldest daughter come into the room and say,
‘Mommy, will you marry him?’ and he came in with the ring on
his thumb.”
Myers and Ward originally planned to save for their

On Oct. 16, 1995, African-American males descended in droves on the District of Columbia
for a historic gathering on the National Mall. Prophetically dubbed the Million Man March ahead
of time, the gathering lived up to its billing, with anywhere between 1 and 2 million brothers
attending – depending upon the news source.
Over the course of the day-long event, organized by Minister Louis Farrakhan and the
Nation of Islam, the audience listened to such luminaries as the Rev. Al Sharpton, the Rev. Jesse
Jackson, the Rev. Ben Chavis, Congressman Charles Rangel, Kwanzaa creator Ron Karenga,
Stevie Wonder and Los Angeles Sentinel publisher Danny Bakewell. They heard from female
leaders, too, including attorney Faye Williams, poet Maya Angelou, civil rights pioneer Rosa
Parks, Dr. Dorothy Height and Dr. Betty Shabazz, the widow of the late Malcolm X, to name a
few.
While the speeches touched on a range of themes, they unified to paint a touching picture of
Black-on-Black love in stark contradiction to the prevailing negative images then disseminated
by the mainstream media. All of the above has been faithfully preserved by director Glenn
Towery in Long Live the Spirit of the Million Man March, a documentary serving as a priceless
keepsake of what was also referred to as a “Day of Atonement.”
To his credit, Towery, with the help of Kenyan cameraman Linus Leting, managed to capture
not only what transpired up on the stage, but the intimate reflections of many lesser-known
participants, who share from the heart just what the experience meant to them. Given the
escalation of the host of woes affliction the Black community over the intervening years, that
makes this memento of more optimistic times all the more priceless.
