Time
(min.) Process Components
10 *Anticipatory Set
min
Before lesson, TTW review prefixes and hand out pre-/post- sentence worksheet.
TTW review directions and do first one w/class on document camera. TSW then
complete worksheet individually.

1 min *State the Objectives (grade-level terms)

Were going to talk about the Gadget War and learn how to write a good book review!
We are going to put all of the components of a good book review into an outline to
help us write our own.
10 *Instructional Input or Procedure
min TTW ask students for a review of what we talked about yesterday. Students should
mention Spaghetti Book Club, the book review, and aspects of a good book review.

10 *Modeling
min TTW pull up Spaghetti Book Club on Smartboard. TTW ask for a suggestion of a
book title and go to that book review. TSW again point out the key elements of a
good book review.
2 min *Check for Understanding
TTW check for understanding by asking the students if they get the idea of a book
review or if they want to look at one more example. TTW then explain that we are
going to make an outline to follow for our own book reviews.

15 *Guided Practice
min TTW have a blank piece of notebook paper on the document camera. TTW ask the
students what the first paragraph should be and different elements of the first
paragraph. (Setting up story, summarize, highlights, at least 5 good sentences)

TTW then continue this process for the second paragraph (Like or dislike-why,
favorite part, make connections, at least 4 sentences.
TTW then do this process for the third paragraph. (I recommend this book for_____
because_______)

TTW then review names the students may need help spelling (Kelly, Albert Einstein
Jones, Mr. Hardeman, Danville School)
15 *Independent Practice
min TSW begin their rough draft of The Gadget War book review.

Assessment
The assessments include the oral questions that are answered.
The formative assessment on prefixes is the sentence worksheet.
1 min *Closure
TTW close by asking on a scale of 1-10 how comfortable they are with writing a
book review.
Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning style).
Students are able to suggest titles of book reviews to look at that may help them understand
the concept better.
Classroom Management Issues (optional)
Must manage students and ensure they are on task.
