Handout Answer Key

Example 1: Poor. The opening statement is weak, and there was not an
ending statement. Only one reason was given supporting the motion."It's
a good idea" is a vague, ineffective statement.

Example 2: Average. Used beginning and ending statements. Inadequate

number of reasons for adopting the motion.

Example 3: Good. Used beginning and ending

statements. Stated several reasons for voting in favor of the
motion that were presented in a logical sequence.

Example 4: Excellent. Used beginning and ending statements. Stated four

reasons for supporting the motion and included reference to their chapter
advisor. Arguments are clearly outlined and easy to follow.

Whiteboard Parts of a Good Debate

Opening: I am for/against this motion.
Main idea- Why is this a good/bad idea?
Closing: I hope my fellow floor members will vote yes for this motion!
*** Use stories, connect with FFA events or values, and use your knowledge
as an officer.
Application: Now that we have discussed the basics, we are going to let you practice
debating. This volleyball has positive and negative signs written on each
Debate Volleyball side of the ball.
Have everyone stand in a circle facing each other. I will be providing you
with practice motions throughout the activity. Pass the volleyball around the
circle. If you catch the ball with the positive sign facing up, you will be
debating for the motion. If you catch the ball with the negative sign facing
up, you will be debating against the motion. I also will be participating in
this activity! Any questions? GO!
