RESOLUTION-
The distance between the 2 peaks on a histogram
The smaller the number, the better the resolution; the smaller the
distance the better the resolution
An 8x10 would have better resolution than a 10x12 due to the pixel
size
Film has significantly higher resolution
DETAIL-
Also known as spatial resolution, it is the differential grays between 2
pixels
CHANGING FACTORS:
SID is directly related to detail
o if you decrease your SID you will lose detail due to magnification
o if you increase your SID you will increase your detail due to less
magnification
THICKNESS-
The thicker the patient part, there is an increase in OID therefore
creating magnification with less detail
The thinner the patient part, the closer the part is to the IR with less
OID, creating less magnification with better detail
FOCAL SPOT-
Increasing the SID = a smaller focal spot = better detail
Decreasing the SID = a larger focal spot = better detail
NOTEBOOK 8
FILM/SCREEN CONTACT-
Once a film is not held directly against the side of the cassette due to
wear and tear or whatever creates the distance between the film and
the cassette or the intensifying screen and the IR, then the detail is
decreased/lose detail.
CRYSTAL SIZE-
A larger crystal needs few photons to process, therefore it processes
faster than a smaller crystal would but creates less detail
o Faster processing speed with less detail
A smaller crystal needs more photons to process, and due to the size of
the crystal it is harder to the photons to penetrate directly to the
crystal so therefore it takes longer to process but creates better detail.
o Slower processing speed with better detail
DISTORTION-
A misrepresentation of size and/or shape of a structure being
examined.
Creates magnification
oblique views create intentional distortion
Larger SID = less distortion
o Shape distortion can be due to
Elongation
o The distortion of the anatomy looking longer than its true
length due to the projection
Foreshortening
The distortion of the anatomy looking shorter than its true
length due to the projection.
