MULTICULTURAL LESSON PLAN

1. Standards: CCSD Core Curriculum Standards, 1st Grade: 1.OA.A.1

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving
situations of adding to, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all
positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol
for the unknown number to represent the problem.
1. Objectives:
a. Standard 1.OA.A.1
SWBAT define and identify the terms (add, addition, subtract) of addition
and subtraction that will help them solve the problem. (knowledge level)

SWBAT solve addition and subtraction word problems within 20.
(analysis level)
SWBAT evaluate the math problem and select the correct answer.
(evaluation level)
Multicultural Goal: SWBAT develop an educational environment that
promotes respect for differences.
Learning Styles
o Auditory
o Visual
o Kinesthetic
Gardner's Intelligences
o Linguistic
o Logical-mathematical
o Spatial
o Bodily-Kinesthetic
2. Materials/Equipment: In order to introduce this lesson, I will start with the song
Adding and Subtracting in order to remind my students of what
adding and subtracting is. This video also fits perfect with this
lesson because it gives examples of word problems as well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHI0ePgwlgU

Teacher will need: white board, marker, computer, projector,

student worksheets (attached), items (manipulatives) to use to
demonstrate addition and subtraction such as toy cars, flowers,
marbles, etc.
Student will need: paper, pencil

3. Procedures:
1. Introduction and interest hook- In order to introduce this lesson and
capture the students attention I will play the song Addition and
Subtraction by Harry Kindergarten Music (link above). I will play the
song once to let the students hear it, then a few more times after to try and
teach the students the words to the song. Possibly add in a few dance
moves as well so the student can associate certain movements to remind
them what addition and subtraction is.

2. Teaching strategies and activities: After the song I will pass out Add
To: Change Unknown (within 20) word card problems. This was a
worksheet I found through CCSD Curriculum Engine. I will explain the
worksheet then we will do the first half of the worksheet (A through H)
together though whole group instruction. This will be an opportunity to get
the students familiar with the word problems and comfortable with
speaking and answering questions in front of their peers. Next, the
students will pair up and do word problems I though P.

Teacher: We are going to start with word problem A, Peter had 6 toy cars. Mike gave Peter some
more toy cars. Then Peter had 13 toy cars in all. How many toy cars did Mike give
Peter? How can we show this on the board?
Student 1: Can you repeat the question please?
Student 2: Draw 13 toy cars then erase 6.
Student 3: Can I use the toy cars on this table so I can show you?
Teacher: (Write on board what first 2 students say and hand student 3 toy cars) How many toy
cars did Mike give Peter?
Class: Mike gave Peter 7 toy cars.

Student 1 is an Auditory learner.

Student 2 is a Visual learner.
Student 3 is a Kinesthetic learner.

-Repeat with next worksheet, Subtract From: Change Unknown (within 20) word card problems.

4. Closure: After worksheets are complete, we will regroup again as a class and in
closing we will sing and dance to the Adding and Subtracting song
again. This will allows the students to briefly review and demonstrate their
learning. After, I will go around the room and ask each student a simple
addition or subtraction problem. This will demonstrate the observable
objectives for both the subject/concepts taught and the multicultural
objective by developing an educational environment that promotes respect
for differences and helping the students be comfortable in front of their
peers.

E. Assessment: Attached is the rubric I have created to assess my students focusing on the
observable objectives for the subject taught and the multicultural
skills, knowledge etc. taught.
