REDUCING VALVES
79 SERIES PRESSURE REDUCING VALVES
STEAM CAPACITY IN KILOGRAMS PER HOUR.
C
7
Capacities are based on the valve being installed with inlet and outlet pipes sized correctly for the steam flow.
The above chart lists capacities down to 50% of the inlet pressure, the flow rate does not increase for lower set pressures.
Maximum pressure reduction ratio is 10:1, e.g. 1000 to 100 kPa.
For greater reductions two valves in series should be considered, please consult Mack Valves.
Maximum Turndown Ratio is 10:1 e.g. 4000 kg/hr maximum flow and 400 kg/hr minimum flow.
For larger variations two valves in parallel should be considered, please consult Mack Valves.
If operating parameters fall outside these guidelines please contact Mack Valves for assistance.
Inlet pressures up to 1750 kPa are available, please consult Mack Valves.

REDUCING VALVES
C SIZING PRESSURE REDUCING VALVES
8
For Pressure Reducing valves to operate effectively and reliably they need to be sized correctly in
conjunction with their associated pipework. Too large a valve will cause pressure fluctuations (known as
hunting) and the valve will wear out very quickly. Too small a valve will starve the process and cause
excessive pressure drop off as flow increases.
To properly size a Pressure Reducing valve the following details are required.
Inlet Pressure
Outlet Pressure
Fluid (e.g. Steam, Water, Air or Gas type)
Maximum Flow Rate
Minimum Flow Rate
Inlet Pipe Size
Outlet Pipe Size
For Steam, Air & Gas valves it is important to ensure both the inlet & outlet pipework are properly sized
to carry the desired flow rates at the required pressures. If either pipe is undersized the capacity of the
system will be reduced and the valve is likely to suffer poor control and premature wear. In instances
where the piping is undersized, the best valve performance will be achieved when the valve is sized to
match the piping flows and not the desired system capacity.
For Water & Liquid valves, it is important to maintain sensible velocities within the valve body itself.
This improves set pressure accuracy and reduces the potential for excessive wear. When sizing pressure
reducing valves make sure to respect the maximum pressure drop line on the sizing graphs. This line
is not the maximum pressure drop the valve can handle in operation, it is the maximum only for sizing
purposes and ensures sensible flow velocities within the valve body. If the true operating pressure drop
is below the maximum line on the sizing chart, then use the true figure for selecting the valve size.
TURNDOWN RATIO
The relationship between the maximum and minimum required flowrates is known as the turndown ratio.
The maximum turndown ratio is normally 10% eg a maximum flow of 1800 kg/s and a minimum of
180 kg/s. If the variance between minimum and maximum flows is more than 90%, then consideration
needs to be given to using two valves in parallel. Two valves in parallel allows the larger valve to handle
the high flows and the smaller valve to handle the low flow condition.
INSTALLATION
To ensure effective operation and longevity it is recommended that a suitable line strainer is placed
before any Pressured Reducing valve. Isolation valves sized to match the inlet and outlet pipe sizes,
along with inlet & outlet Pressure Gauges should also be installed to ensure ease of maintenance and
setting. Consideration should also be given to fitting a Pressure Relief of Safety Relief valves downstream
of the Pressure Reducing valve to protect downstream equipment from over pressure.

REDUCING VALVES
LOW PRESSURE STEAM INSTALLATIONS
C The design and construction of a system using low-pressure steam must comply with the requirements
STOP VALVES:
Stop valve should be fitted on the inlet and outlet of the reducing valve to allow for maintenance. Either
Ball or Globe type isolation valves are commonly used.
STRAINER:
It is good practice to protect the pressure reducing valve from pipe scale and dirt by installing a Y
strainer on the inlet side.
SAFETY VALVE:
The low-pressure system must be protected by a safety valve. The safety valve should be sized to
handle the maximum capacity of the pressure reducing valve and set to the design pressure limit of the
downstream piping or equipment.
OTHER FITTINGS:
Inlet & Outlet pressure gauges make valve setting much easier. A by-pass valve can be used in critical
applications to ensure steam supply. Line steam traps or separators should be considered to ensure the
steam is dry.
