Animation is the process of making the illusion of
motion and the illusion of change by means of the
rapid display of a sequence of images that minimally
differ from each other. Animation can be recorded
with either analogue media, a flip book, motion pic-
ture film, video tape, digital media, including formats
with animated GIF, Flash animation, and digital
video.
Initially when animations started with paper (2D
Animation), people had a perception that it was
restricted to only drawing and cartoons. As the
industry matured with computers being introduced,
the perception changed to flashy, photo-realistic or
cartoonish productions for web games, movies, video
games etc. Today, animation has convinced profes-
sionals from various fields that it should not be re-
stricted to a skill set, but should be used as a medium
of expression or communication.
In truth, animation is used in a variety of industries
away from the big screen or consoles. Computer
animation is a very practical tool with useful appli-
cations in a variety of fields. Now a days handicraft
industries also use animation even though they are
not related to the media & entertainment sectors.
The screw-pine industry in Kerala is such an indus-
try which has a rich, maritime history. A screw-pine
plant resembles the foliage of a palm tree but its
leaves are soft and fibrous, protected by small, sharp
thorns on both edges.
In Kerala, some regions are known especially for
their screw-pine products. Many families from these
villages have been producing screw-pine products
for generations. Those families are now practicing
their art with more vigour and passion, because in
the modern world this ancient tradition of Kerala is
feared to be diminishing. Most of the practitioners,
along with many enthusiasts, work hard to follow the
traditional methods with a view of preserving its her-
itage and quality. Due to its exquisite handiwork and
gentle demeanour, screw-pine products are popular
among tourist and locals as gift articles and souve-
nirs. Perhaps the most important factor is the labour
and passion of the artisans creating these master-
pieces, which makes the screw-pine mats, purses and
wall-hangings so special.
There are many explorations of this screw pine craft
which can be beautifully done by animation, such as
advertisements, which includes Simple motion ads,
In-marquee ads, Real time ads, Banner ads, PPC ads
etc. Apart from the advertisement, animation can be
also used to show the other information about the
craft, to create tutorials of the craft items and how
to tutorials videos of any product of any particular
product. It is impossible to showcase the history of
such an old craft which was born in a century where
there were no technology to capture those moments,
but animation is the one and only possibilty to recre-
