Data used:
Taking T1 and T3 as 425C and 100C, thermal resistances R1 and R2 are calculated.
Ri and Ro are neglected.
Steady rate of Heat Transfer from the Reactor becomes,
r r
= T 1 T 3 ln( r2 ) ln( r3 )
Q R1 +R2 R1 = 1
R2 = 2

Estimation of the differential Thermal Stresses:
to and ti are the hoop stresses set up at the common interface surfaces in T22 and SS347 respectively due to
the differential thermal expansion and r the effective increase in radial stress at the common junction surface
caused by the same effect, i.e. r = pt . However, any radial pressure at the common interface will produce
hoop tension in the outer cylinder but hoop compression in the inner cylinder.
Differential thermal stresses are calculated using Lame equations and the following equation
1 1
E o [to + v o pt ] E i [ti + v i pt ] = [i o ][T 2 T 1 ]
Result:
Calculated values of Hoop stresses, to & ti and Radial stress, pt at the interface are given below:
