Environment Protection Policy and Practice

Pollution
Industrial units making steel generally let out pollutants- solid, liquid and gas and these pollutants affect Environment. If
proper and adequate measures are not undertaken to treat/dispose them off, they produce hazardous effects on humans,
flora and fauna and they in turn tend to destroy the very sensitive ecological balance which may have far reaching results
on our mother earths environment. Further, pollutants tend to shorten the life span of plant and machinery, which are the
lifeline of the industrial concern.

Taking into view this very important and vital aspect, Bhushan Power & Steel Ltd. has embodied Environment protection and
Pollution Control in its values and commitments to make all its plants environment friendly and conforming to highest levels
of environment protection and Pollution Control as per National and International standards.

Generally, Industrial concerns produce three types of pollution- Air, Water and Noise. Air in and around the plant is polluted
with gases, fumes and dust particles emanating from the processes, chimneys, transfer points of conveying and handling
equipment. The main pollutants in and around a Steel plant are - dust and gases like SO2, NO2, CO etc. Water pollution mainly
comprises of inorganic solids, oil, grease etc. in suspension, solution and emulsion. Noise is another source of pollution. Many
operations produce objectionable level of noise, which cannot be eliminated entirely, but can be brought down to the accept-
able levels. The major noise generating areas are blowing station, compressed air station, Blast furnace etc.

Pollution Control Measures

The steel making process at our Orissa plant employs coal based DR-EAF route, which is comparatively cleaner process
in comparison to the conventional iron and steel making processes. Thus, making a good beginning we also strive for
further reduction of pollutants in Air, water and environment.

Air Pollution
Gaseous emissions are released through stacks of required height so as not to exceed ambient air quality norms due
to the entire plant. Ground Level Concentration (GLC) of different pollutants is kept within permissible limits. Various
dust extraction and dust suppression systems envisaged/erected are indicated in table-1

Dust Extraction and Dust Suppression Systems

water tank etc.
4. Raw Material Storage Yard Dust suppression system with plain water - comprising of circular swiv-
eling sprinklers, piping network, valves, pumps, instrumentation and
controls, electrics, water tank etc.

Water Pollution Control

The pollutants present in the wastewater are reduced to acceptable levels by adopting one or more of the following
measures.

Recirculating water in the process whereby discharged volume is considerably reduced

Close circuit cooling wherever feasible

Clarifier and sludge pond for removal of suspended solids

1
Neutralisation of acidic water by lime

Removal of oil and grease from the contaminated water by means of oil traps and skimming devices

Noise Pollution Control

Various measures envisaged to reduce noise pollution include reduction of noise at source, provision of acoustic lagging
for the equipment and suction side silencers, selection of low noise equipment, isolation of noisy equipment from work-
ing personnel. In some areas where due to technological process, it is not feasible to bring down the noise level within
acceptable limits, personnel working in these areas are provided with noise reduction aids such as ear mufflers. The
duration of exposure of the personnel is also limited as per the norms.

OTHER ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY AND COST EFFECTIVE MEASURES

Waste Material and By Product Management
Solid By Products like Raw material fines, DRI Fines, Non-magnetic char, Clarifier sludge, EAF slag, Iron scales, dust
from bag filters and ESPs and Fly and bottom ash are treated as per details given in the table below.

Type of Waste Toxicity Disposal/Diagnosis

Raw materials fines Non-toxic Dumped/sold outside
DRI fines Non-toxic Charged in EAF
BF Slag Non-toxic BF slag granulated & sold to cement plants
Non-magnetic char Non-toxic Dumped/sold outside
Clarifier sludge Non-toxic Dumped within the plant in the slag dump yard
BOF Slag Non-toxic Filling of land and rod making
EAF slag & SAF Slag Non-toxic Disposed off in the slag dump yard
Dust from bag filters and ESP Non-tox- Iron scales from billet Non-toxic Used as scrap in EAF
ic Disposed off in the slag dump yard caster scale pit
Fly and bottom ash from power plant Toxic but nonhazardous Disposed off as slurry in the ash pond outside the
plant boundary

Gases and Fumes - We recover BF Gas and use the same for captive power generation thus conserving energy, control-
ling pollution and saving environment

Green Belt
Existing flora is safeguarded and supplemented by planting additional trees and plants in and around the working
site. Adequate green belt all around the plant and inside is our priority. Locally available trees, which are resistant
to pollutants and/or which reduce pollution are planted.

Environmental and Pollution Monitoring

The principal pollution sources like DR kilns stack, calcining stack, EAF and LF stack are provided with on-line moni-
toring device for recording the levels of conventional pollutants like TSP, SO2, NOx and CO. In addition, conformances
to the wastewater discharge standards are routinely monitored. We also intend engaging external agencies to monitor
levels of various pollutants in air, in water and of noise.

Plant Safety
Plant safety measures form an integral part of the environment protection plan of the plants.

Workers safety is our highest concern. In-built safety features of the plant and machinery are adequate enough to
avoid hazardous events causing damage to the life and property.
